Thread: Dune: Part Two Discussion Thread | Embrace Your Destiny
I'm sure the movie will be good and all but I really wonder about the selection process for getting to review these things.

Seeing some relatively small movie channels who had early access to this. Feels like an easy way to build fake hype.

Also IGN gave an episode of rings of power a 10/10 "masterpiece" score so how good Dune will be with an 8 is anyone's guess.

Just a couple of Designers geeking about Dune Graphic Design through the years, but fascinating to see some of the different versions of posters etc

Dune is that one IP that each take on the brand has resulted in interesting and appropriate design. Even that late 60's font which evokes both an exotic and sandy place with its design language to the current super simple and clean design evoking a super futuristic minimalistic aesthetic with D U N C.

Love me that C.

What pressure is he under? The vast majority of people who watch the films haven't read the books and few if any are going to be 'I wonder what happens next?' given the principal storyline wraps itself up nicely. The good guys beat the bad guys.

I'm well aware of Dune Messiah...I've read all the books (albeit in my youth) and honestly, the fact that Herbert was pressured into Messiah showed given both its shortest and overall paucity (The negative response in many ways then led him to course correct with Children of Dune which was a lot better). I watched a YouTube recap of it the other day to refamiliarise myself with it and it's not got 'cinematic experience' written all over it, versus court drama for the most part. Although I really enjoyed the first film and am looking forward to the sequel, it would have made a lot more sense realistically to have made Dune as a big-budget HBO series in the spirit of Game of Thrones. As great as the first film was, compared to the books it was a bit too broad brush at times and definitely would have benefitted from more build-up, over say an 8-10 episode season of Television. Honestly, It barely feels like The Atriedes have taken over Arrakis before they get attacked out of the blue by the Emperor and the Harkonnens, plus also an HBO show wouldn't be hampered by the need to qualify as PG13, whereas the book series most certainly is not.

DV is a fantastic director and honestly so far hasn't put a foot wrong, but I'd be more inclined to move on to other projects at this juncture if I were him versus trying to push a project that has every likelihood of flatlining the franchise entirely because Messiah is the runt of the litter at the end of the day. Alternatively, if there was/is enough additional footage to turn the 2 films into an HBO adaptation with more added scenes, release that and then make Messiah as a series, because it's a lot of plotting and scheming for the most part, and TV excels at that sort of thing over film.

He'll be under the same pressure that Herbert was. I don't think Herbert's original intention was for Dune to be a series and book 2 sparked a lot of ideas for him, though his pressure came from introducing new characters and elements at the tail end of book 1.

If Villeneuve honors Alia and her actions, Part 3 is going to be more sought after than Part 2. What Alia does is too intriguing. Villeneuve will run into the same situtation that Herbert did. Villeneuve has also strongly hinted that it's going to be a trilogy. I do think he's just teasing everyone for his own enjoyment. I'm willing to bet that Part 3 will be full sails ahead within this year. After Messiah, that wraps Paul's arc and we'll see this series turn into a franchise that will be directed by different hands.

He's a world-renowned film director with a pretty stellar track record, accountable to no one regarding his next project. The talk is he's looking to Adapt Rendezvous with Rama as his next project by all accounts. Even if Dune Messiah was green-lit based on Dune Part 2 doing well at the BO, there is absolutely zero necessity to get it underway immediately, as the actors aging out a bit would be no bad thing given the storyline is set 12+ years after the events of Dune. Take a break, do something else (RwR and maybe Sicario 3 🙏) then return to Dune Messiah once Tim has eaten a few Big Mac's and hit the gym a bit, so Duncan can be impressed.

Also if I was DV, maybe it's time to start thinking about doing a film that might secure him an Oscar. Albeit I expect Dune Part Two will win a lot of Plaudits and some technical awards, he didn't even get a Best Director Nom for Part One.

To be fair, Oscars usually wait for the final entry of a series to start nominating it seriously. I don't think Chalamet will buff up for Part 3 because he would have done it for Part 2. It's a two year gap and in the books, he's suppose to be built and war torn by now. He's committing to the twink life.

Oscars have woke rules now so doubt he'll ever make it. It's his lesser known movie but watch Polytechnique if you can. Fucking brutal violence.

I will honestly be surprised if DV gets a look in as director or a best picture Nom versus some more Oscar-friendly fare (which no one sees), although I expect on the technical front Part 2 will clean up like Part One did. As for Tim, albeit I think he is a decent actor, I think there's an expiry date on that whole nebbish thing he has going on in the long term as far as roles go.

I wasn't aware that Dune won 6 Oscars. I just figured it didn't since action-y films usually get snubbed. Chalamet definitely has acting chops but I don't think he'll get buff because he's never done a body transformation for a role before. I just want Part 3 to be finished because Chalamet is dating Kylie Jenner. With that influence around him, he can Zach Efron himself any day now and I rather it be after Part 3.

Seeing this in IMAX tomorrow.

I'm actually expecting to see something good for once, though also prepared for Zendaya to do more of her usual cunt bitch shtick.

Saw it. Enjoyed it. Some of it left me scratching my head, but the visuals, especially on Prometheus ,were amazing

Just saw in IMAX! It's so good, no Chani wasn't a girl boss! Very bad rumors. But Zendaya is no Sean Young as Chani. Definitely weakest actress. Fayt is so demented, great performance!

Wishing the movie was longer even tho it's close to 3hrs!!

Early reviews have me in FOMO-Boner-Mode

Probably gonna watch this tonight on some halfassed audio/visual after I rewatch the first one again

I even have the monthly movie pass thing but fuck if I ever want to share a movie watching experience with people in the cellphone era. I'd just as soon watch a 5/10 audio/visual quality on my own than with a room full of assholes that can't focus, to each their own

You need to find a better theater! I actually go to theater that is a little pricier and been having better experience!

Damn what a good movie.

Not sure which one was better. Right now I am leaning to two but I will need to watch it again.

My wife liked the 2nd one more because of all the action. I have a weird obsession with the world building in the first.

2 will probably be much easier to rewatch for most.

Really impressed with how they handled all the vision stuff.

They handled Alia well. I knew they weren't going to have a baby do all of that.
And yeah, I knew they were going to do a lame love story with Chani. That's Hollywood for ya. Overall it was great.

The love story was fine. Just because you're not down with Eyebrows McAcups doesn't mean it was an issue or got in the way

Yeah it doesn't change much…yet.
Chani had a "this isn't over" look in the last shot. Who knows where they're going with that for Part 3.

After sleeping on it I will be seeing this again in theatre. This will probably be one of my top 5 movies.

Just got done watching it. Holy Fuck did Denis outdo himself. Part One was already pretty impressive, but Part Two just ups the ante. SPOILERS AHEAD

The performances were incredible, especially Rebecca Ferguson as Jessica, who becomes a full fledged religious zealot hellbent on seeing her son evolve into the Messiah Incarnate, and Javier Bardem as Stilgar, whose belief in Paul as the Messiah slowly overtakes all sense. I also have to give it to Austin Butler for making Feyd Rutha such a menacing presence, especially in that dark interlude we take to Geidi Prime.

Now the BIG change from the book, the unborn Alia. And to be honest, I like this change. Alia being a creepy 4 year old in the book and other adaptations is okay, but having her being a fully conscious unborn fetus gives her whole existence a terrifying new dimension. It really shows why the Bene Geserit consider the preborn 'Abominations', as the movie shows she can converse with Jessica and even assert her control through her mother's Voice.

The music and sound design were amazing, as were the visuals. It really shows you why you need a big budget to adapt a story like Dune. I mean, the Scifi Channel miniseries was fine for what it was but the cheap looking sets and effects didn't really do it any favors.

Phenomenal film. Hope it does gangbusters so the adaptation of Dune Messiah can be made.

It left Chani's story too open ended. But can cause plot issues in Dune Messiah.
