Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama died on March 1 due to an acute subdural hematoma, Toriyama's Bird Studio and Capsule Corporation Tokyo announced.

In addition to the Dragon Ball series, Toriyama also created Dr. Slump and Sand Land and handled the character designs for Chrono Trigger, Blue Dragon, and all of the Dragon Quest series.

Here is the full message from Bird Studio and Capsule Corporation Tokyo on Toriyama's passing:

Dear friends and partners,

We are deeply saddened to inform you that Manga creator Akira Toriyama passed away on March 1 due to acute subdural hematoma. He was in age of 68.

It's our deep regret that he still had several works in the middle of creation with great enthusiasm. Also, he would have many more things to achieve.

However, he has left many manga titles and works of art to this world. Thanks to the support of so many people around the world, he has been able to continue his creative activities for over 45 years. We hope that Akira Toriyama's unique world of creation continues to be loved by everyone for a long time to come.

We inform you this sad news, with gratefulness for your kindness during his lifetime.

Funeral service was held with his family and very few relatives. Following his wishes for tranquility, we respectfully inform you that we would not accept flowers, condolences gifts, visiting, offerings and others. Also, we ask you to refrain from conducting interviews with his family.

Future plan for commemorate gathering is not decided; we will let you know when it's confirmed. We deeply thank you for your understanding and support as always.

Loved his art, especially with Dragon Quest, and of course he inspired many other creators. Rest in peace.

Looking back at his career, it surprised me to learn that he'd already become a huge success with Dr. Slump.

Dragonball was his followup manga, and initially fans were somewhat disappointed that it wasn't as good as it's predecessor.

Well... we all know how that turned out. As soon as the manga and anime reached the DBZ era it exploded in popularity worldwide.

Who'd have thought the artist of a gag manga would become one of the most beloved comic artists in the world?

Youre forgetting all the work he did for gaming too, if it wasn't for him I doubt Dragon Quest would have took off and inspired other jrpgs

I was ready when Sugiyama died since he was in his 90's.

Toriyama though... Was a shocker to me last night when I found out.

January 1990. When I took a chance and rented "Dragon Warrior" for my NES and soon encountered my first exposure to his artwork upon encountering my first enemy slime. "Why does this monster look like a Hershey's Kiss chocolate?"

And of course, Dragon Ball. Dr. Slump too... His wonderful work with Chrono Trigger...

Now only Yuji Horii remains from the original trio of Dragon Quest. 😞

His impact on the things I love cannot be stated enough.

Truly a sad day for fans of his work, worldwide.

Yeah, the look and sound of Dragon Quest, including the cover art of the games, are very unique and stand out. Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, Blue Dragon, and Tobal No. 1 (JPN). Always enjoyed his unique style to anime and how it influenced other creators like Eiichiro Oda with One Piece, because you see that same unique, expressive quality in other shonen manga. For me personally, Akira Toriyama, Tite Kubo, and Eiichiro Oda, have the best, most memorable manga art styles.

RIP Akira Toriyama

I love Dragon Quest 8.
One of my favorite PS2 games. Very cozy JRPG with how well the art and music come together to create the game world.

I guess this also means Dragon Quest XII will be the final main installment when it releases probably late 2025 or 2026. Close to 40 years of Dragon Quest games. Still remember when I was introduced to the series with Dragon Warrior I and II on the Game Boy Color and then Dragon Warrior III, the best of the Erdrick/Loto trilogy.

Another favorite moment was in Chrono Trigger (for myself, playing the DS version) and getting the Dream Project ending, going through all of the different rooms, reading the dialogue of everyone that worked on the game.
