Lynch is trash
IDK if I would go as far as trash, but looking at what he directed its not an all-star list by any means. When Dune is one of your stand out works you are B-Tier filmmaker. I enjoyed Dune, but on so many levels it was thoroughly subpar. And I never understood why people cared about Twin Peaks, so maybe I am just missing something there.
Kevin Smith fell off hard as fuck in the 2000s but at least his first few films were exceptional. Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and Dogma were all great. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was ok... and then he started putting out crap. He became the 'Hollywood Comic Guy' and became insufferable. But I dont hold that against his early work, they were great.
Both Eraserhead and Clerks are in my top five all time movies. With that said, neither director has been able to top their gritty black and white debut feature films.
Kevin never recovered from Jersey Girl bombing the way it did, I think. Its a shame too because if that movie and Chasing Amy are anything to go by, it really would've been something to see his career evolve into a more mature dramedy avenue. The dude clearly has a big heart and its what makes his movies so special beyond the fart jokes, weed humor, and pop culture references. People forget how much of a trendsetter he was for that at the time, and Mallrats is a perfect example.
Meanwhile Lynch began to enjoy his reputation as an obtuse weirdo too much. Every time he starts wiggling his fingers in interviews or releasing over indulgent nonsense like Inland Empire... ehhh.
You're right, both filmmakers have their best years far behind them at this point. Its just trendy to like Lynch and dislike Smith. Like some sort of bizarre meaningless cinephile cred.
Mallrats is a great comfort flick while Mulholland Drive is something I really have to be in the mood for. I cant say Ive ever come close to loving any characters in a David Lynch movie the way I have with Smith's.
Lynch is a painter acting as a director, and Smith is a screenwriter doing the same.
Im just grateful Smith sobered up recently. Hopefully he can make something better than the abysmal Clerks 3.
Lynch directed the hell out of this scene.
Also he knows how to pick music and make women look great. Naomi is so good in this.
Despite all the funny videos for Mallrats, Mulholland Drive wins this rematch and will move on to Round 3.
Fuck Mallrats bro, you should be embarrassed for even thinking it better than Mulholland Drive, let alone vote for it lol. Napoleon Dynamite or Office Space is probably the best comedy of all time in my book, but will I put those above a masterpiece? Fuck no

A lot of people say Eraserhead is his greatest, but personally I cannot stand behind that film. Not even for a moment. It's good, but I'm not sure I'd praise it much beyond that. Like if it got a special anniversary re-release at AMC I wouldn't buy tickets or anythingIm not even sure id consider Mulholland Drive to be a top 5 Lynch movie, let alone an all time GOAT
I havent seen it in years though. I should correct that

Did you all just vote for the lesbian sex scene?
I voted against it originally because of some hint of that I saw in one of the trailers. After all that is going on in the modern era, I just want to see normal sexual relations in my movies. Once it starts changing, it doesn't seem to stop.
nigel what
Not to get too political, but with modern culture and gaming saturated with LGBT, I just want to chill and watch a movie with normal couples. I am just so bored with the LGBT stuff already. It has been done to death.
