I haven't seen any of these movies but both Perfect Blue and Dead Poets Society seem interesting to me. They explore interesting subjects. A lot deeper than the cookie cutter movies today. The costs of fame vs the non-material riches in life. I'll be going back to these movies later on for sure.

It's between Avatar and Casino for me. I'll go with Avatar cause The Way of Water was so good.

Perfect Blue. A fantastic debut from director Satoshi Kon that blurs the line between reality and fantasy. It's also damning window into Japan's idol culture.

I always found Dead Poet's Society kind of overrated actually. Same with Avatar, although it has fantastic visuals that need to be seen in 3D.

Do you think Japans idol culture as shown in that movie is that different to western celebrity culture? The more I learn about Japan, the more similar to the west it seems these days.

Perfect Blue is phenomenal. Such an unassuming thriller that captivates the audience until the finish. It is the basis for the film Black Swan... but much better imo.

Casino is one of my favorite mafia films. An epic tale of the rise (and fall) of some Vegas players. Deniro and Pesci are simply great.

Chasing Amy, while not kevin smith's best classic, but it is one of his better films and it does have a some very memorable scenes.
My personal favorite:

Dead Poet Society is super meh and way over rated. Robin Williams in this is what subpar public school teachers pretend they are. Eat shit Captain, my captain!

Avatar is also pretty meh. Its fun in 3d when you are stoned, but the plot is weak, art direction/creature design is crap and the characters are ALL unlikable.

Never seen the other film.

You wouldn't find anything like the Japanese Idol industry in America. Idols are expected to be 'pure' and virginal; and to act a certain way to keep that image. This also means no real life romantic entanglements like boyfriends or getting married.

Proper face off starts tomorrow? Going to be fun.

First I was thinking of giving people a chance to save 10 of the almost winners from this first round and adding to the next round, taking it to 150. That should be going until next Wednesday and then I'll release the final results of the first round winners.
Then the next Monday the proper Face/Off's start, with 1v1 every weekday.

So as to not give too much away, every weekend the next weeks face-offs will be shown in spoilers so as to give people who want it some hype while also allowing other people to keep themselves surprised if they choose to. I think that's a good balance, but it can be changed if needed.

Oof that would be a long competition. But I'm up for it.

Casino wins this vote, and is the last winner of Round 1! Tomorrow, I'll post a second chance save thread where members can save 10 movies that got close but didn't quite make it. It'll be up for a few days for people to mull it over and then there will be a little break afterwards to prepare for the beginning of Round 2 on the 27th. :)
