As good as Die Hard is, it didn't do anything other films weren't doing. It's a pretty simple story - just done really well.

The Matrix not only told a wholly original story, it changed the landscape of action cinematography forever.

Die Hard of course, not only is it the best Christmas movie it's also as watchable now as when it was first made. Due mostly to practical effects and it being a great action movie. It's an annual watch for me...

Matrix was mind-blowing at the time and changed cinema but it's pretty unwatchable cringe now . Maybe the whole current 'escape the matrix' thing has tainted it or maybe seeing the brother/sisters now and the whole allegory for transitioning controversy doesn't help. But either way for me the matrix hasn't aged well.

Both are great but it has 5o be Die Hard for me.
Hard to tell if its them both as series making some of the decision.
Die Hard you can really get into an arguement if the 4th (Live Free or Die Hard) is the decline.
Matrix though great movie, followed by interesting animation followed by.... a rave scene.
The good quips, setting the everyman that actually looks like hes been through the shit hero puts it just that much ahead

I really enjoy Die Hard as a movie but I think there are a lot of movies that are similar. I still watch it regularly but it is too similar to many other movies to vote for it over The Matrix.

When I first saw the Matrix when I was younger I didn't get it at all but after seeing it as an adult I can appreciate its themes a lot more. Like Die Hard is has great action sequences, a well written villain and has interesting and varied characters. But I think that the Matrix is its own kind of movie that doesn't really have as many direct competitors, not even the Matrix sequels can compare to the original movie. Its uniqueness is probably the main reason I am voting for it over Die Hard.

You wrote a lot to just say that you are retarded.

The Matrix is cooler because of its philosophical themes, and how it miraculously handles them in an entirely humbled fashion. Not an easy task, and something which its sequels weren't able to pull off as naturally.

I think people forget just how monumental this movie was, and the endless parodies and knock-offs it inspired.

Remember renting it on VHS as a kid with my cousins, aunt, uncle, and grandma; and we were all just completely floored. You watched the first Matrix when it dropped and you just fully knew you'd seen something pivotal.

The movie became part of our vernacular from discussions of simulation theory, red-pilling, "a glitch in the Matrix", etc.

All this hand-waving ITT of "b-b-but trans people" is so played-out, and short sighted in an effort to dismiss just how important of a movie The Matrix was. A cultural phenomenon. It's the only reason The Wachowskis are even known names. It's not as though they made anything genuinely worthy of note before or after the Matrix trillogy.

Give me the hyper stylized action flick which makes me question the nature of my very existence over Die Hard any day.

I legitimately looked at the world different after coming out of the theatre after seeing the Matrix in March of 1999. The commercials for it were awesome and it really intrigued me. I was not disappointed. One of my favourite films of all time.

Not taking anything away from Die Hard. They're just two movies aiming at very different goals.

This. Die Hard is (very) good at what it does but the Matrix is just on another level entirely for all the reasons you laid out.

The Matrix losing this poll would be a complete travesty. But I fully expect a Biden style 3am dump here to fuck Keanu over.
