Thread: Do you consider the game, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, to be among the top 25 greatest games of all time?

Is TOTK among the 25 greatest games of all time in your opinion?

I love Zelda games but hate the BoTW/ToTK formula.
I do not hate the BOTW/TOTK formula, but to continue on with the same decisions that make those games what they are would be an irredeemable mistake on behalf of the devs calling the shots in the franchise. Nintendo has to do away with much of the decisions they chose to create open world 2017-2023 TLoZ with. On some level, I'll always take issue with these decisions w/ BOTW and TOTK, as a Zelda fan:

-Generic NPCs
-Average voice actors
-Copy and Paste Overworld
-Shortchanged of fantastical OST for a more environmental soundtrack to match the open world
-Games both rely on farming too much, which is fair since it's only natural to want more supplies in survival games, but still…
-Copy and pasted bosses in BOTW
-Lacking atmosphere
-Generally redundant visitations throughout the overworld; we still have had better in past Zelda games
-Mainly in TOTK = annoying NPC yelling, audible noises or sound effects to accentuate the dialogue

But at the same time, you look at my list and would assume I dislike the game. That is not the case, and TOTK might enter my top 10-15 games ever made. Just have to wait and see, but I'm still enjoying TOTK tremendously

Breath of the Wild: Nuts & Bolts

But really, I don't even like the art direction and that weapons still break. Hopefully the next 3D Zelda is completely different.

I will say I could come up with a list of complaints I have with TOTK. Most of them are related to how tedious repeated actions can be. They could have tightened certain aspects up a lot but maybe they like the player discussing how many hours they got from the game.

But that said, the amount of freedom you get is pretty great in a current day game. Back in the PS2 days, a GTA game let you complete missions any way you wanted. Then they started going "realistic" and suddenly you had to get from point A to B without any deviation in how they wanted you experiencing the mission because otherwise you'd miss the dialog they paid for. TOTK reminds me of those older days.

I think that TOTK is definitely a top 25 game and I also place it higher than BOTW. The overworld has a grand scale, with the underground being good for crafting stuff and farming and the overworld not repeating the size of the depths and just having a smattering of things to do. While having the depths was a great addition, if they made as much content for the sky islands the game would just be too stretched out.

Apart from the depths, I would say the better things about the game are the amount of missions in the game, the fun dungeons and having the Korok's who need help (I love those little guys. The sign guy is just annoying after a while, but I will always try and save the koroks who just want to chill with their friend. 😊)

The downsides to the game are that some of the higher level enemies can just be attack sponges (which really sucks when weapons degrade so quickly), the world needs more and better music in the overworld and the cutscenes after you beat the dungeon bosses are seriously repetitive. The first half of cutscenes are literally the same, why they couldn't show something a little different for each one I don't know.

I still think OOT is a much tighter game and is still the best of the Zelda games, but I'd place TOTK above Majora's Mask. MM had a really unique concept with the time mechanics, but TOTK brings so much to the table as a game. I am only near finishing now after 5 months and it has been a really great time.

While this thread is full of bitter console warriors, I want to say this: Despite having been fun while I played it, I have already completely forgotten about TotK and I don't care about it one bit. There's zero emotional connection to it. I might go back and do the remaining shrines, but the game's biggest flaw is it'sack of a sense of wonder. A lack that comes from the non-existent, repetitive lore. When you play games like Skyrim or Witcher 3, there's so many stories and important characters that all contribute to the world. When you play TotK, Link and Zelda are the only meaningful characters and instead of diverse lore, the game tells you the same boring-ass backstory 3-4 times.

OoT remains the best Zelda, because it best balances all aspects that make a great game. I don't think I'd put TotK in my top25.
