4k UHDs are awesome. I recently purchased a Panasonic DP-UB820 to watch my discs on my LG C2 because I wanted to take advantage of my discs which offer Dolby Vision. Something which neither my XSX or PS5 are capable of handling.
It looks amazing. Simply breathtaking. So glad I decided to cough up the coin. Almost makes me wonder if I should eventually upgrade from my current 5.1 surround set up. Maybe next year.
I have an extensive UHD collection. While I know streaming has certainly surpassed physical media as far as movies are concerned, I can't help but treasure the superior imagery and audio quality which a physical disc still provides.
It's one of those things too, where I prefer the disc so strongly, that I've never even bothered with those digital codes, etc.
It's funny, I stan hard for digital games yet am digging my heels in for physical movies.
WITH THAT SAID. I swung by the Target near my work today and saw just how tiny and pathetic their movie selection has become. No longer is there even a single aisle dedicated to movies. Instead, there's one singular small four sided shelving unit. Not a full shelf, but a tiny display similar to what you'd have seen budget DVDs, or y'know like "horror movies for October" placed upon in the past. That was it. All their UHD, bluray, and DVDs. I could've sworn there was more elsewhere, but I was wrong. I should've taken a picture had I known I'd make this thread.
It really bums me out, because I love home video. Never was all that head over heels for the movie theater experience, but I absolutely treasured watching movies at home since I was young whether that was VHS, DVD, Blu-ray, or now UHD.
Just stinks, because with all the old catalog titles I'm stumbling upon being released on Amazon, or the more boutique labels pumping out more obscure/foreign/genre flicks - I really was ignorant to just how much physical movies were fading away. Think it's very much a niche interest at this point in time.
So RIP to physical movies I guess. I'm going to continue to support and treasure these releases that continue to come out. I don't foresee any proper successor to the UHD format. It will easily be the last physical home video medium we ever see. Shame it didn't catch on the way DVD or even blu-ray did.
