Thread: Do you collect 4k UHDs? I'd like to discuss the current state of the medium in 2024

4k UHDs are awesome. I recently purchased a Panasonic DP-UB820 to watch my discs on my LG C2 because I wanted to take advantage of my discs which offer Dolby Vision. Something which neither my XSX or PS5 are capable of handling.

It looks amazing. Simply breathtaking. So glad I decided to cough up the coin. Almost makes me wonder if I should eventually upgrade from my current 5.1 surround set up. Maybe next year.

I have an extensive UHD collection. While I know streaming has certainly surpassed physical media as far as movies are concerned, I can't help but treasure the superior imagery and audio quality which a physical disc still provides.

It's one of those things too, where I prefer the disc so strongly, that I've never even bothered with those digital codes, etc.

It's funny, I stan hard for digital games yet am digging my heels in for physical movies.

WITH THAT SAID. I swung by the Target near my work today and saw just how tiny and pathetic their movie selection has become. No longer is there even a single aisle dedicated to movies. Instead, there's one singular small four sided shelving unit. Not a full shelf, but a tiny display similar to what you'd have seen budget DVDs, or y'know like "horror movies for October" placed upon in the past. That was it. All their UHD, bluray, and DVDs. I could've sworn there was more elsewhere, but I was wrong. I should've taken a picture had I known I'd make this thread.

It really bums me out, because I love home video. Never was all that head over heels for the movie theater experience, but I absolutely treasured watching movies at home since I was young whether that was VHS, DVD, Blu-ray, or now UHD.

Just stinks, because with all the old catalog titles I'm stumbling upon being released on Amazon, or the more boutique labels pumping out more obscure/foreign/genre flicks - I really was ignorant to just how much physical movies were fading away. Think it's very much a niche interest at this point in time.

So RIP to physical movies I guess. I'm going to continue to support and treasure these releases that continue to come out. I don't foresee any proper successor to the UHD format. It will easily be the last physical home video medium we ever see. Shame it didn't catch on the way DVD or even blu-ray did.

.
When I watch a movie, I always buy the UHD. Watch it, then sell it again. I very rarely rewatch anything. I keep some classics like Jurassic Park 4k, but it's not many movies.

Eh, If I were gonna just watch things once I'd probably just torrent everything.

There's been multiple times where I've sold entire collections thinking "I'll just torrent everything, I'd rather have the money"

Then I always end up hoarding movies again 😹

I'm still rocking a 1080p TV (all 27 inches of it), but yeah, even with the highest quality streaming, just DVD's look better, and I watch a Blu Rays before streaming whenever possible.

I have however been preparing for the day this old set of mine finally dies and I at last make the jump to 4K.

My wife and I get a lot of Steelbooks and limited editions of our favourite films, and those more often than not have the UHD included with the standard Blu Rays.

I have dozens of 4K discs ready to go, and always keep my eyes peeled and alerts set up for any more we know we're going to want to always be available.

Hell, I'd sooner watch a VHS than give money to Disney+ at this point.

Dude

You could drop like $400 - $500 USD and get a TV which absolutely obliterates your current panel both in size and resolution today

Life's too short to not make the jump. Put that old panel in a spare room or something lol. Peep your 4k discs

I get 4k rips that are about 15-30gb in size. You'd be hard pressed to tell a difference from a physical disc. If any difference is perceived its miniscule. But no way I'd spend £25 on a single UHD anymore.

Old one still works fine.

Must be nearly 15 years old now. Bought the best available for my budget and, with my usual tight waddedness, at a massive discount. The brightness and colour seems to be going a bit off of late though, so I've started looking at replacements.

My biggest problem with upgrading is the fact that TV's have now become way too bloody big and also all insist on having smart functionality I actively don't want.

Quite honestly I'm probably going to end up buying a 32 inch 4K, HDR monitor isntead. Biggest problem there being the fact so many of the bigger, better quality monitors are using curved panels still, which is a pain in the arse, and now manufacturers have started to put bloody smart features in their monitors too, the cunts.

Sigh. Yes, it's an addiction. I have over 400 discs, and I have watched maybe 150 of them.

Honestly, it's like trading cards for me at this point. I am filling the shelf more than anything. But that being said...

For me, it's more about audio quality than anything else. I find streaming to be pretty close picture-wise. Even on my 77 CX, video is usually hard to point out the difference. Audio, on the other hand, stinks compared to a disc. Not kidding. When you are used to high-end audio, going to streaming is like listening to the radio after getting used to lossless audio.

There will likely never be another disc-based format. I believe AI-enhanced players will be it for 8K.

You dont have to touch the smart features. Ive never bothered and theyve never gotten in the way. All they are is like streaming apps like Netflix or Hulu like you have on your console

Also dude 27 is tiny. So is 32. 55 or larger is the way to go

Best wishes

What kind of speakers do you have again? Ill admit, i use Amazon Prime streaming at times and have never noticed any quality issues with audio or video

My Polk setup is pretty damn mid tier. Nothing nuts

I do and it's worth spending extra on the movies you truly love. The Nightmare Before Christmas looks amazing on UHD btw

Never been a Nightmare Before Christmas fan, but I did recently get my Sleepy Hollow steelbook in the mail

Im excited to revisit that film

Why actively avoid 4k? Man: 4k, OLED, HDR10+, Dolby Vision... the hype is real

I grew up watching movies at the dollar cinema with stereo sound if you were lucky.. Blu rays ripped on my computer played on my 1080p projector with my sound bar easily replicates that.

EDIT: and for the past 22 years I have been watching 99% of my movies at the Drive In so the 1080p pro jo and sound bar are actually better than that.

I have a 5.1.4 Airmotiv from Emotiva setup. Mostly their 2 range all around except one set of heights is the A1.

Amazon does tend to have the best when done right. The Grand Tour for instance is probably the best quality wise I've seen streaming both Audio and Video. HBO Max has some decent stuff too. Their Atmos codec seems to be a step above others, granted I have really only watched their top tier content. (Last of Us, Justice League Snyder Cut)

The thing about audio that sticks out to me right away, is dialogue. I can tell usually pretty quick when a movie is lacking Dynamic range on streaming the minute people start speaking. If I have to crank the volume knob to get to a listening level I can fully understand what is being said, I know I am in for a bad time. When I say a bad time, its by no means unwatchable but you just lose that punch to the audio. When you hear the booms and the sharpness of a 4K disc that has good audio, you start to see the matrix and notice when its lacking.

If you have the ability, Find Men in Black on 4k and find it on a streaming service, or even download a decent rip. One of the best uses of atoms I've ever heard is the intro scene with the bug flying. Awesome atmospheric sound. Then go to the scene where Smith/J uses the noisy circuit for the first time. The punch from the bass and sound is one the best.
Then hop over to the stream and you will see all the punch is just gone. It doesn't sound "bad" but you are missing the features you are basically paying for when you go to a higher end system. You lose that airy atmosphereic sound. The sound feels like its coming from the speakers rather than filling up the room if that makes sense.

Rant over.

Post a pic of your collection, i'm curious what you are rocking.

Smart features are just more to go wrong and a waste of power, plus the inevitable updates and passage of time will eventually mean those smart features eill slow everything down, potentially brick the TV, and eventually end up redundantpy unsupported regardless.

I want at least a decades use minimum out of a TV set, and the less gimmicky bollocks the better, particularly given what low quality the computing hardware is that gets used in even the most expensive sets for those smart features.

And that's without getting into privacy concerns.

Nope, I'll be using dedicated hardware for media, so smart TV's are just charging me more for the inclusion of lower quality parts than the rest of the set uses, just to give me the option of a worse software experience than I'll actually be using out of choice regardless.

As for size, nah, people are going insane with big TV's that completely counteract the advantages in resolution increases, and end up ridiculously dominating the room.

I want something that I won't notice when I'm not using it, not something that leaves an entire wall nothing but an imposing black rectangle.

YES! I do like the screen big... even with my blu rays... right now my projector screen is 100" but I would like to go at least 120... need a slightly bigger room or a short throw pro jo to do that.

I only have a couple of 4K Blu Ray's in my collection, most of it is DVDs from the mid 2000s and then about a quarter are standard Blu Rays. Like Teezzy I really enjoy watching movies at home and I am sad to see how physical media are being phased out. Although I have a 4K TV, I still think that 1080p Blu Rays are really good and while I would have liked to have upgraded more of my DVDs to Blu Ray, I won't really be that fussed about not being able to upgrade the standard Blu Ray's to 4K. I think the bitrate of standards Blu Rays are enough for me. Watching HD streams just isn't the same, I think that I'll need to watch 4K streaming services just to get enough bitrate for my tastes.

@Nikana

TV: 77" LG OLED C2
PLAYER: Panasonic DP-UB820
AVR: Yamaha RX-V385
SPEAKERS: (2) Polk Monitor 10Bs , Polk CS-1 Series II, (2) Polk R10s, Yamaha YST-SW216

Monitor 10Bs are my fronts and the R10s are my rears. It's a fairly standard 5.1 setup. Polk speakers front, back and center, Yamaha AVR and subwoofer. I really piece mealed this together when money was tighter for me, but it sounds great to my ears. The 10Bs are cool because they're big ol' vintage 70s boys. Like OG Polk. Like their first line of speakers, I think. They're about 3/4 the height of the TV itself.

(mine would be the second to last in the ad here)

Not my pic, but here they are on some stands:

I went vintage because these used to be what I had in my turntable setup. I restored 'em myself. Love the Peerless tweeters on these. You get a ton of bang for your buck going with vintage speakers. They punch above their weight class given the affordability due to age. Looks like you can snag a pair on Ebay for about $500 or so. No Atmos, dual sub, or 7.1 for me yet lol.

And now for the movies...

This should be everything for my 4k Discs. For some reason I cant add my Arrow copy of Fear and Loathing on blu-ray.com. Also there's no option for their version of Tenebrae so I just picked a Synapse disc on the site. I've got a few pre-orders in here too

It's a big pic, but it's what I had to do in MS Paint 😂

I don't bother tracking my regular blu-rays/DVDs online. Too lazy

I'll be the first to tell you smart tvs were a dumb idea, but there's easy workarounds.

Just don't ever hook the damn thing up to wifi, and the only time it should ever be connected to the internet is when there's some massive improvement or fix via update ; slap an ethernet in that sucka, update, pull it out and never worry about it again.

Although my old bravia x900e, old faithful has never been hooked up to the internet since it never needed any fixes via firmware.

But I mean dude. How close do you need to sit to a 27 or 32 inch baby screen to benefit from those resolution increases? Are you going to watch your discs hunched over a computer desk?

I don't collect. If I really want to see something I will grab it on 4k disc. My only gripe is new releases are normally $30 still. A bit expensive so it has to be something I really want to see. Sometimes I will grab a movie off Amazon if someone I want to see is on sale cheap. I do miss browsing movies in stores. Best Buy, Target, etc. only have a tiny shelf now.

I have some UHDs and they range from meh to incredible. For example Blade Runner looks insanely good, like hot damn. I don't have a dedicated player, I use the Xbox One X, and for everything else I use my ps4 Pro.

TV viewing distance is about 2 to 3M. I'm not saying I wouldn't be able to see more with a bigger screen, just that it's unnecessary. I don't need to recreate the Cinema at home and I don't spend enough time watching it to warrant using so much space for a massive television.

Unobtrusive is one of my requirements.

Aye, it's an option, but I'd rather just not have to worry about it at all. Like I say, more to go wrong and I'd know I'd paid more for it than was necessary. But if I found a fantastic deal, I'd probably take that route, aye.
Not gonna lie dude, this sounds like something someone who's rocking a 27" 720p TV would say..
1080p. I tried a 720p at the time and could tell it was a lower resolution at the same size and distance.

Honestly 2160p is definitely overkill for my needs, and I'd prefer 1440p at 32 inches, because I know that's the point of diminishing returns i can twll the difference with, since I've spent a lot of time looking at this stuff for work, family and gaming, but that doesn't scale properly for 1080p video, so 2160p it is.

I'm a physical guy.

About 800 4K/BD entries (a disc collection being one entry). I will keep buying them until they don't make them anymore. Heck I just bought a 2023 release on vinyl of the Neon Genesis Evangelion soundtrack... So there will always be a market for physical me thinks.

Best Buy here used to have four large rows of movies front and back. They had all the latest stuff plus tons of older stuff with regular sales. I used to stop in to browse every now and then. Now it is one small rectangular unit for the latest stuff and one shelf next to that for new stuff that didn't sell out right away and they needed to dump somewhere. They have another shelf for anime + Disney too and that's it.

Target is an end cap for new stuff and a small shelf for budget dvd/blu. Surprised dvd is still around lol.

I have about 1000 Blu Rays, with maybe 100 of them being UHD. picture quality blows away streaming. Get most from Amazon, but go elsewhere when I have to. I use the PS5 to watch, as the Xbox seems to have the inferior picture quality. I may buy a dedicated player soon though.

I own about 200 Blu Rays. I own exactly one UHD. (Bullet Train)

Physical for life. I'll always chose a disc over streaming. So much nicer looking and sounding.

The store I bought most from closed in April though... 😓
