Thread: Deep Silver brings back Free Radical to work on a new TimeSplitters
Really need to bring a remaster for 1, 2 and FP out with FP's online multiplayer!, so so much fun, especially the challenges mode!

Would love to see s strong comeback. But man, these things rarely turn out great.
I have to agree. Timesplitters was buoyed by the fact that it had (IIRC) some Goldeneye developers on its pedigree, but most importantly, it was a legit first person shooter at a time when first person shooters were on fire because of Halo. It was really cumbersome because you had to buy a multi-tap to get four controllers on a PS2, and then the game was a pretty one-note affair (the single player was pretty awful). Still, it played great and was fun, but it was behind Halo pretty drastically because the minute I thought how nice it was to have a four player FPS on the PS2, my friend was talking about having Halo LAN parties and scoffing at split screen play.

I'm intrigued, but I don't think the name or the pedigree (or even the FPS market itself) has the cachet it once did, so it's gonna have to be a pretty strong, well-rounded game this time. Looking forward to hearing more.

It was 20 years ago, but all I know is that playing TimeSplitters 2 was a joy. It was a tad schizophrenic with every chapter and character being in a completely different age, something that could restrict the fun GE/PD objective stuff when it went straight medieval, but even that made for a lot of variety and enjoyment.

I would genuinely love to see them take another shot, as it seems if these specific guys don't do it, nobody else wants to tackle the GE/PD style of shooter. It'd be fun to see what they could put together in the modern age.

Those are people from Dambusters studios? Or how it was called Homefront 2 devs..

I just want a game with levels you can repeat on higher difficulties with optional objectives, like Timesplitters 2.

It was. A lot of the team that worked at Rare were instrumental in the development of the series. You're right that it is no Halo though as that game was such a leap over what had been on N64. I wouldn't say the single player was awful, however, (at least in 2 and TP, never played the first) as they heavily built the level design around ideas for Goldeneye and Perfect Dark which means objective based gameplay and the ability to tackle some missions in a non-linear fashion, which always allowed for a little bit of variety and creativity.

In 2002/3/4 the gameplay and compact level design was a little outdated, but it was a nice throwback to the Rare FPS structure, only this time with much nicer graphics and a silky smooth 60FPS. I still love the first level of TS2 because it is so heavily reminiscent of the Dam level from Goldeneye, both visually and aurally. The games were pretty good IMO at the time (especially if you didn't own an Xbox) and I'd love to see the series make a comeback.

loved me some Time Splitters 2 on the GameCube! Dual wielding double barrel shotguns or tommy guns was so fun.

Going to assume the "dev team" is just a couple of the old guard with a (mostly) fresh workforce. So definitely an uphill battle to recapture the old magic. But High hopes that they make something new and fresh as a result.

There has been rumors of TimeSplitters for the Switch.

So this is interesting.

Is it confirmation? Or was the Switch stuff misdirection and we get either cross gen or Next gen only?

I fucking loved Timesplitters 1 and 2 on the PS2. Those were some very different times, though. Those were still kinda "you either have a good PC and play Counterstrike or you're a console peasant taking whatever FPS scraps you can find" days. Halo was at least good if you had an Xbox (didn't get mine until 2004), but on the PS2 side, your choices were very limited for good FPS games.

Then comes this crazy motherfucker with its smooth 60fps performance and glass that breaks from where you shoot it and a Goldeneye feel and suddenly it's like you almost have a real FPS game on your hands. I think that helped a lot with our fond memories. I just wonder if this has any place whatsoever in today's industry.

Yeah. Sometimes people just remember loving something, not the specific reasons why they loved it, and if those reasons are still valid.

Hopefully the developers are up to the amped expectations of today, and can bring that classic N64 FPS fun (with the objectives and more thoughtful play) forward.
