Good
  • One of the best video game remakes I've ever played
  • Intensity director does a bang up job of scaring you
  • Stunning in visuals and game play
  • New Game+ included on release
Bad
  • No photo mode
  • Purists still won't like that Isaac has a face and voice

Amazing
Dead Space is a superb remake and undoubtedly the definitive way to experience one of the best survival horror shooters that Capcom never made.

The Good

  • Dead Space's combat remains uniquely gratifying and the reworked weapons only improve its limb-dismembering action
  • Secondary fire modes give you extra strategic options and room to experiment
  • Zero-G sections are much more interesting and not as rigid as before
  • Isaac's newfound voice gives him agency and the story is expanded upon in an engaging manner

The Bad

  • Side quests aren't particularly interesting and revolve around stale backtracking

Pros

  • Visually stunning
  • Improved zero g sections
  • Retains the propulsive quality of the original

Cons

  • Technically demanding
  • Innocuous story revisions

While this is a meticulous and appreciative reworking, a little too much of it seems designed to get in the original's way, to blur its focus and mutate it into an appendage of the omnivorous franchise operation it would become, where everything needs to be written into an on-going narrative backdrop, and genuine ambiguity is minimised. Rather than rescuing the past, it represents a franchise reaching its tendrils backward through time to become its own progenitor. The results can be compelling, but make sure you play the 2008 game first.

It took me around 12 hours to complete everything on medium difficulty, but the remake also features new game plus with harder 'phantom enemies' and twelve hidden Marker Fragments(opens in new tab) that unlock an alternate ending if found. So even though it's a little on the shorter side, this is what Dead Space has always been: an intense, momentum-driven experience. Most of all, I'm just happy Dead Space is back and Dead Space is good. Even if this doesn't lead to a new game, I'll keep my limbs crossed for an equally strong remake of the second in the future.

The Dead Space remake feels clean and good in a way that few big-budget Western titles do right now. In 2008, Dead Space seemed like a variation on any number of story-based horror shooters. It was directly inspired by Resident Evil 4 (which itself is getting a remake this year) but also shared DNA with first-person games like BioShock and Half-Life 2, which beat it by a few years to telekinesis and weaponized industrial tools. But in 2023's world of modest indie narrative games and sprawling open-world AAA slogs, it stands nearly alone. The closest equivalent, Dead Space creator Glen Schofield's The Callisto Protocol, seemed almost embarrassed to be a game instead of an unforgiving interactive movie.

Dead Space is also replete with accessibility features, including multiple colorblind modes, input options, and even content warnings and an option to hide disturbing scenes. Yes, this is a game slathered in gore and visceral body horror, but moments of self-harm and extreme violence can be bypassed, if that is your preference. The work that Motive has done in bringing Dead Space back to life is exciting not just for the ability to play an idealized version of a classic game on new platforms, but also in the promising groundwork it lays for the franchise's potential future.

Did Dead Space need a remake? Yeah. Sure. Why not. This is now the best way to experience Visceral's horror classic, luxuriously improved in small but considered ways. Especially for those new to the series. And for those who've already played it? I mean, it's Dead Space. Again. But better.

This is a very good—in fact, we'd argue, the best—version of something that was already a very good video game. (One that, in a nice change of pace from the typical remake trend, has not been remastered into the ground already.) If you played Dead Space 15 years ago and loved it, you've got a beautiful, improved version of it to come home to. And if you never played it, you've got a genuinely great experience ahead of you, a winning blend of horror and action that at no point feels needlessly beholden to its own past.

Rather than reinvent the wheel, Motive made Dead Space look nicer, play better, and preserved the core of the experience. Its new flourishes add to that enjoyment instead of subtracting. This remake respects and polishes up my memories of Isaac's first encounter with the necromorphs without making me miss the original version. It also acts as the perfect entry point for newcomers since it feels on par with today's titles. I hope this exceptional revision signals to EA that Dead Space has plenty of gas in the tank and becomes a harbinger for more horrifying stories in this universe.

In Short: An excellent remake of a not-quite-classic survival horror, that nevertheless makes a convincing argument for the continuation of the series.

Pros: A respectful remake that makes several changes to the original design without them ever seeing out of place. The core experience is tense and atmospheric, with an unusual combat focus.

Cons: The original game always had problems in terms of pacing, repetition, and general unoriginality. Remake graphics could be better and the zero-G sequences are disappointing.

Score: 7/10

  • PROS

    • Excellent visuals
    • Good PC performance
    • Terrific gameplay and weapons overhaul
    • New side missions add replay value
  • CONS

    • Characters have unexpressive faces
    • Leans more into jump scares than legit horror

Ultimately, all prospective players need to know is this: Motive Studios has succeeded in making the Dead Space Remake the definitive way to enjoy the first chapter of Isaac Clarke's journey.

Pros

  • It looks terrifyingly gorgeous
  • Loads more depth than the original
  • It's effortlessly confident in what it does

Cons

  • Map backtracking can sometimes feel restrictive
  • Nods to source material can occasionally feel dated

The Dead Space remake improves on the 2008 original in every category, offering quality-of-life improvements, new story content, side quests, and dramatically upgraded graphics. It's Dead Space, but better, and many fans will be happy to see this classic survival horror experience get the modern makeover it deserves.

Dead Space is a brilliant and terrifying horror experience made better with this release. Everything you remember loving about the original is still here, with added quality and updates that improve it for a new generation. While playing, I could feel my muscles tense, and my hands clam up, desperately trying to use a healing item I didn't have as I nervously rounded a corner. This will likely be something I share with all who play, no matter their past with the series. But, even without the nostalgia, I can't recommend a better survival horror gaming experience than this.

It can't be overstated just how much a Dead Space remake always seemed like a sure thing, and after my time with it, that perspective hasn't changed. It's easily one of the best modern horror games, and the fresh lick of paint to really bring its grimy, snarling interpretation of sci-fi horror into sharp new relief is very welcome, especially when it maintains such faith in the source material.

And as far as remakes go, Dead Space has me thoroughly pining over a decade-old series. That's a success, if you ask me.

It feels great to just dive back into the USG Ishimura, though. Dead Space as a concept still holds up, and the reworking EA Motive has provided highlights its best features while shoring up old pitfalls. Sci-fi survival horror fans should get what they want out of this: the return of a classic, with gorgeous graphics and some new twists, but the same old boot-stomping good time.

Pros

  • Stunning visuals and audio
  • Gruesome new "Peeling" system
  • Expanded narrative
  • USG Ishimura is now interconnected with no loading screens

Cons

  • $70 price tag might seem steep for a remake

A truly magnificent survival horror romp, the Dead Space remake by Motive Studio and EA is an excellent return to the franchise and a perfect champion of the genre.

IGNs final preview:

Motive has made many smart changes to Dead Space, but it never shakes things up to the point of being unrecognisable. The result, at least across the first several chapters, is something that feels similar in philosophy to a director's cut (albeit a director's cut that's completely re-filmed on brand new sets). This experience appears largely the same as the 2008 original, but honed and polished to a beautiful, gory finish. As such, this remake will likely work best for brand new players or the most dedicated Dead Space fans. As someone who loves the original game, I found what I played an absolute thrill. But for less invested fans the value is of a more questionable quantity, since even with the changes this is an incredibly similar experience. As such I don't think Dead Space will be as essential and transformative as the Resident Evil 2 remake was. As the best possible way to play this landmark survival horror, though? I have near enough no doubt that Dead Space will succeed in that mission.

They did change some things up, like adding side quests or implementing some features from Dead Space 2. Game looks great and seems to be really good. I still would've preferred a complete remake like RE2 Remake for example. Will still play it.

Strong OT. You did well by this game. At the time, I really could not put this game down for weeks and weeks, months probably. To anyone reading this who has not played the game, know that you've selected a modern day classic, and prepare to be holding your breath terrified the entire playthrough

and here I thought the PS3 version had aged gracefully... dang, that's a pretty upgrade.

And it's more than simply a visual upgrade. They added an "AI Intensity Director":

Motive created an "Intensity Director" that matches players to a "curve of tension" that ensures the game stays scary, even for areas that have already been explored.

"That generates […] whether it's lighting effects like flickering or shutting off completely, to video effects to sound effects, to encounters and fake encounters – just to have dead bodies lying around and nothing spawning – or a mix of all of that. There's basically hundreds of possible scenarios from all of these different combination of items that are possible when the player traverses and re-traverses the ship. So that was one feature we added based on un-broken immersion."

They also made the Ishimura one big space, instead of the fixed levels from the first game, added weapon and upgrade mechanics from Dead Space 2, added some side quests, expanded the story and certain characters etc.

I'm really back and forth on whether I'll pick this up day one. I played the hell out of the original so I'm not super into the idea of paying full price for a game I've played before.

Awesome OT. Love how you have parts of it holographic like the in-game RIG menu. One of the best if not the best game UI ever.

This art is from 2. That's the Advanced Suit (coolest suit in series) which as far as I remember wasn't in 1.

And going by the Resident Evil Remakes, and the general hype for this, Dead Space 2 should be the next in line to be made whole remade.

No cheap Steam keys on CDKeys so its 50 quid direct on Steam or I can get the PS5 version for 53 with my work discount, I think I'll just avoid any potential fucking around and get the PS5 version, RT + Dualsense bullshandy will be a bonus, I think the resolution would take too much of a hit to get locked 60fps on my 1080 so I'd be locking to 30 on PC anyway, maybe with a slightly higher res but no RT.

Just praying for a really good HDR implement, they always fuck up the games that would benefit most... this game came just before I hit send, haven't watched yet but sounds promising, for PC at least:

One reason I am pumped about this is because of HDR on my CX. Should be a match made in heaven.

Glad to see they didn't somehow fuck up a sure thing. I'll probably wait for a price cut, but excited to do some limb slicing in the future.

I never was a huge Dead Space remake. It was a bit boring back in the day but I did finished all of these games.
I am looking forward to HDR here for sure!!! Lg c1 is perfect for stuff like this.

Not sure if I want it and if I do, if I want it for pc or ps5.
Dualsense would be great but this is a good mouse and keyboard game too
