The Deep.
Famed American Marine Biologist Dr Sarah Marlow, announced her intention to dive to the deepest part of the ocean humanly possible using an atmospheric diving suit. Her son, James, recently died of cancer and as part of overcoming the pain of losing her son, Sarah wanted to plant a flag her son made before he passed on the ocean floor. This was the Sarah's deepest attempt since becoming a Marine Biologist, but the memory of her son gave her the strength to pursue his last wish.
The day of the dive arrived and Sarah while mentally nervous, portrayed a confident face for the cameras before slowly entering the diving suit and being lowered into the deep blue ocean.
As she began her slow descent, she would time to time receive updates from her fellow biologists on the boat who assisted with the dive. The deeper she went, the more muffled their voices became till eventually all she could hear was the sound of her heavy breathing and the static on the radio earpiece she wore. At this point, despite not hearing anything she continued to send messages every 50 meters about her vitals and what she saw, hoping that her colleagues would receive the messages and be assured of her safety.
Passing the 400-meter mark, the ocean became a dark and nearly lifeless place with nothing but tiny specs of oceanic organisms dashing around her helmet. Light from the surface barely penetrated which made it difficult to see anything further than a few feet.
It would be another 150 meters before she reached her goal and 400 meters was the deepest she had ever dove, however, determined to see her mission through, she kept going lower.
Surrounded by nothingness, Sarah's breathing became heavier and heavier, a sign that the emptiness of the ocean space was getting to her, till eventually she noticed a light in the distance.
"That's too big to be an anglerfish" she thought to herself.
However, despite her concerns, the light came closer and closer. Intrigued, Sarah focused all the lights on her suit in the direction of the anomaly hoping to catch a glimpse of its source. However, the lights barely made a dent in the surrounding darkness.
As the light drew closer, Sarah began hearing voices of her deceased son James.
"Mommy," the voice called out. A confused Sarah shouted back "James!" repeating his name over and over as the voice that mimicked her son called out to her.
Eventually, Sarah and the light came face to face. Sarah's face turned into shocked only to revert to a happy sadness, as a glowing figure resembling her son, floated before her.
With tears, running down her face, Sarah quietly said "James, I missed you!" as she reached out to her son hoping to hug the luminous figure, not noticing the giant teeth that slowly encompassed her entire suit.
