Developer has "every intention of bringing it to the other major platforms."

ConcernedApe, the creator of Stardew Valley, has announced ConcernedApe's Haunted Chocolatier, a new RPG / simulation game currently in development. Currently, the only confirmed platform is PC, but ConcernedApe said it has "every intention of bringing it to the other major platforms as well."

"In Stardew Valley, the focus was more humble: living off the land, growing food, and connecting to the people and nature around you," ConcernedApe, whose real name is Eric Barone, said in a blog post. "However, with my next game, I wanted to explore more fantastical possibilities… experiences that take you beyond the ordinary. That's where magical haunted ghost chocolate comes in."

Barone continued, "Chocolate represents that which is delightful. The haunted castle represents the allure of the unknown. The ghosts represent the imprint of the past. All of these things are important. However, don't think for a moment that, because this game features ghosts in a haunted castle, it is an evil or negative game. On the contrary, I intend for this game to be positive, uplifting, and life-affirming. However, if Stardew Valley mostly channeled the energy of the sun, Haunted Chocolatier channels the energy of the moon. Both are vital."

The gameplay loop of ConcernedApe's Haunted Chocolatier involves gathering ingredients, making chocolate, and running a chocolate shop, but "there's a lot more to the game than that, the developer affirms. "I don't want to get too deep into at this early stage, partly because I don't want to be tied down to any particular concept of what the game is."

Barone describes ConcernedApe's Haunted Chocolatier as a means to 'unleash' his creativity and not be tied down to working with an established tradition, as was the case with Stardew Valley.

Here is the full FAQ provided by the developer:

What is ConcernedApe's Haunted Chocolatier?

ConcernedApe's Haunted Chocolatier is an RPG / simulation game, currently in development.

In this game, you will play as a chocolatier living in a haunted castle. In order to thrive in your new role, you will have to gather rare ingredients, make delicious chocolates, and sell them in a chocolate shop.

There's a lot more to the game than that, but it's still early in development so I don't want to go too deep into it right now.

Who's making this game?

Haunted Chocolatier is being developed by Eric Barone (also known as ConcernedApe), the creator of Stardew Valley.

(So far, I have been working alone on this game, and I have no plans to get anyone else involved at this time. However, when it's close to being done I will most likely get help for console ports and localizations. I will also be self-publishing this game.)

When does it come out?

I can't commit to a release date yet. It's still relatively early in development and I want to be able to work in peace without the pressure of a release date, or even an estimated release date.

Does it take place in the world of Stardew Valley?

I'm not ready to reveal anything like that just yet.

Is the gameplay similar to Stardew Valley?

In some ways, yes, but in many ways, no.

Like Stardew Valley, Haunted Chocolatier is another "town game," where you move to a new town and try your hand at a new way of living. You'll get to know the townspeople, achieve your goals and make progress in many ways. All of that is similar to Stardew Valley. However, the core gameplay and theming are quite a bit different. Haunted Chocolatier is more of an action RPG compared to Stardew Valley. And instead of a farm being the focal point of your endeavors, it's a chocolate shop.

How long has it been in development?

I started working on this game a little over one year ago, in 2020. Since then, I've been working on it mostly in evenings and on the weekends, because I'm still actively working on Stardew Valley-related things.

It's actually not the first or only "new project" I've been working on, but it's the one that I believe I will finish first.

Is it multiplayer?

No, it's currently just single-player. I have no current plans to make it multiplayer.

What platforms will it come out on?

The only platform I am 100 percent certain about is PC. However, I have every intention of bringing it to the other major platforms as well.

What languages will it have?

The only language I know for sure at this point, is English. That being said, I intend to localize to other languages. But I'm not even close to doing that yet, and I don't want to put the cart before the horse, so to speak.

I put multi-plaform as a tag because I'm sure it will come out on everything eventually.

I'm really intrigued by the concept, but I am concerned that things have changed way too much, socially and culturally, for this game to be anything but incredibly woke. Stardew Valley, imo, was the right amount of culturally diverse, but I feel like it probably didn't flaunt enough sexual identities and types of unions to satisfy today's diversity experts.

Will cautiously await to see if this is anything remotely resembling reality.

Yeah I don't know anything about the guy who makes these, but I feel like at least having it all be done by one person gives hope that it doesn't have to turn woke. He didn't have to hire a bunch of blue-haired trannies who forced their fucked up views into it like real game development companies.

But we'll see. Maybe he's all over twitter telling everyone to wear 6 masks for all I know.

I'm talking about real harvest moon. Or rune factory. Anything's better than this shitty woke western rip off.
I've never understood the accusations of SV being woke.

There's a single black guy and his mixed race daughter, plus the romances don't care about player gender, which you'd only really know about if you tried to start a same sex romance.

Other than that, it's a game built around rejecting city life and corporatism, in favour of personal responsibility, starting your own business and improving the community around you through private charity works. It's the opposite of woke for the most part.

Wow, I shouldn't be surprised I guess, but I really didn't think anyone had a negative opinion about Stardew Valley...

The game has good music and much more to do w the systems compared to Harvest Moon and Animal Crossing. Are the NPCs considered a strong point of the game?

Yes. Yes they are. The NPCs are a huge part of the game. The game has basically been universally praised for the level of detail (and even diversity) of the NPC storylines and the relationship system. There are just gobs upon gobs of little hidden secrets and easter eggs (I guess) surrounding the NPCs and what they do, where they go, and how the world is basically tied together.

In fact, I feel like Stardew Valley out-Harvest Moon's Harvest Moon based on what I hear from people who love the games much more than I do.

SV but with chocolate now. What a hack. I'd rather play harvest moon than this shit.
What's your favorite Harvest Moon? Mine is probably 64 or Friends of Mineral Town followed by the original.

AWL or FOMT. Not enough black people though I'll stick to stardew valley instead.
This is basically exactly what I expect from ConcernedApe going forward. The game will feature a gay white male and a white trans male. No other white dudes will be present. 50% of the remaining characters will be unapologetically black. The rest will make up the rest of the existing races. Half the female characters will be bi or totally lesbian. There will be a ton of same sex kissing happening.

And... the game's maker will update his nickname to VeryConcernedApe.

I mean that's the audience. It's HM for people that will never touch HM because it's japanese or whatever. It's a ripoff. I hope he shoves as much woke shit in it as he wants.

I know a lot of straight white girls who love Stardew.

As far as Harvest Moon is concerned, that franchise has only itself to blame after multiple lackluster releases. I really don't understand the Stardew negativity ITT. The dude made a great game. It was never his vision or desire to release anything overly woke, and the audience was happy with the game.

No, if anything, I charge society for being too extremist just ~5 years later.

I don't get you. SV is just an HM clone for retards that don't touch jp games and need somebody like ign or polygon to tell them what to play. That's the only reason it got popular in the first place.

Okay, so what is Stardew missing that makes it a game for retards? The last HM game I touched was on SNES, so there's a lot I don't know here.

I played Stardew and liked it alot for the most part especially first 20 hours or so. I thought interactions with villagers was overall terrible but I still played a fuck ton. Weird thing was I started to like it less more I played. I wouldn't go back. I'd still say its a good game. I like Stardew way less than the best of Harvest Moon games. The N64 one has a shitload of charm I replayed it quite a bit over the years it's probably my favorite. When some kind of N64 clone system or something comes out itll probably be the first game I play.

Im playing Rune Factory 4 on switch right now. I think i played 3ds version for 140 hours or so if I remember. It can be slightly corny but damn is it fun to play. I absolutely love it and its one of best games in genre It's way better than Stardew.
