Thread: Blizzard to record all voice chat and ban users for "naughty language" - OverWatch 2
Microsoft and Activision have both said they'll be monitoring chat for extremism and naughty words. No idea about Sony.

No company doing it is acceptable. I wish people would just say "nahh fuck this I'll play/do something else" but people are addicted to gaming now, so they'll sell their own family in to slavery if they can keep playing popular shootbang
I guess, but no one really uses in game chat on consoles (probably because they'll ban you). It's more worrying about party chat being monitored.

So people are upset that the things they say while playing an online game on said game's servers will be recorded? Is there something to this I'm not understanding?

"you fucking suck as honzo, play someone else, we need a tank". Banned for toxicity....
If Blizzard is so heavy handed it'll be a pretty dead game before too long (Also ignoring that you can't change roles in modern Overwatch :p). I thought people were upset about the mere fact that the voice chat is being recorded though, like it's an invasion of privacy or something.

I guess you'd be fine with our phone calls being monitored/recorded then because we are making the calls over telecoms infrastructure?

Uh, your phone calls ARE recorded for sure, but lets not pretend there's an expectation of privacy in an online video game. It's literally a public space.

Wonder how they get around the 2 party consent laws? Those especially apply to telecommunications.

2 party consent only applies if the parties have a reasonable expectation to privacy. You're not gonna convince anyone an online video game centered on teamplay with 10 people satisfies that condition...

If you're in a party chat with a few friends...

Then you should wonder which friend reported you :p
Are you still ok with it if there was no report? If an AI just looks for keywords that MS or Sony have decided are bad boy thoughts and then they take action on their own?

I would disagree but it's their game, if they don't want people on the voice chat cussing out other players or being toxic dbags is that really a terrible/evil thing?

I pretty much stopped playing multiplayer games in the PS360 days because of toxic voice chat, so I'm not totally against efforts to moderate it. With that said, recording everything that is said and sending it to Blizzard is a pretty scary step. There really needs to be a middle ground where they can moderate multiplayer voice chat without receiving a transcription of everything that you ever said.

But what do you mean recording everything that is said and sending it to blizzard? It's blizzard's game and blizzard's servers? There is no one on this planet who actually believes they have any reasonable expectation of privacy in this environment. It's not like they're snooping on you while you play another game or some crap. You're in their game, on their servers, using voice chat.

I'd prefer a system that either transcribes voice chat locally and only sends it if there is questionable content or one that uses a reporting system to trigger recording and sending. Sending everything is a waste of bandwidth and needlessly invasive. Also, I'd imagine that recording and sending everything would likely be in violation of some data collection laws in some jurisdictions especially when dealing with minors.

I think I'm hung up on this idea of "sending" you keep mentioning. It's their servers, there's no sending right? I do agree that the best system seems like one that only runs through the AI when there's been a report though, and if they spread the net too wide it's obviously going to hurt the game. The toxicity is real though and I'm glad they're trying to do something.

On one hand, I never use voice chat. If I'd use it, if never say anything not game relates either way.

On the other hand, holy shit we're approaching a fully controlled dystopian future so fast it makes your head spin.

You'll monitor your social credit, eat your bugs, disarm yourself, drive electric vehicles dependent on a shit power grid, and love it!

Curious how this will work, tbh. Kids are always coming up with new ways of insulting each other, so this likely isn't going to be very effective. Seems like I hear new slang on almost a daily basis. Big waste of money, imo.

I miss the days when internet was a wild west back to 2000's and earlier when everyone was taking a pot to shot to anyone in terms of chatting. good old days.
I miss actively trying to figure out the most ridiculous insult to use at someone. Or telling whiny kids to ask their mothers why they weren't aborted.

Words aren't toxic. Chernobyl is toxic.

My friends don't give a fuck. That's why we're friends and in party chat

Using the in game voice chat must be a console thing. On PC we were using Team Speak to Ventrilo and now Discord.
