Thread: Black Myth: Wukong Discussion and Reviews Thread
Can anybody playing explain why you would want Composure (dodging no longer interrupts light attack combo)? Seems like a I'm trading Bayonetta for Dark Souls, but is their an advantage besides unlocking the rest of the skill tree?

Game feels breezy compared to "Soulslike"… don't think I'm getting punished for death besides checkpoint. Banging my head on the Withering Wight (maybe early? I snuck around him and unlocked the next shrine) and then going after the fire staff fella before what seems like maybe a point-of-no-return?

This is very fun. A lovely place to be.

The "no longer interrupts…" means you keep you count in the combo like the dodge offset in Bayonetta.

Also worth mentioning you can respec your skill trees at any 'bonfire', which is really nice — almost deckbuilder quality if you want to leverage some synergy for a particular area.

I'm definitely working on some guys I'm not leveled for, but it's fun banging my head on it and figuring out the combat flow. Definitely more Nioh than Souls — you can build a lot of momentum, stagger, then dish out the big unsafe high damage moves.

Finally killed Wandering Wight! Definitely early.. can't even collect the "soul" without "guidance" or something lol. Boxing around, poking with lights to build meter for your get-out-of-jail spell to catch hard to react attacks, heavy on his whiffs, and when those stagger start unloading… seems like if you can hit his head you can get multiple staggers into a knockdown and either commit and spell if you shouldn't have or lights for meter, rinse and repeat.
Jump attack light creates distance and he couldn't really deal with it… hopefully later enemies do or this is pretty broken: jump light, and if they don't do anything "hit confirm" into heavy attack.

Game is very fun I'm glad I went after a "not yet" looking miniboss.

I'm in the third chapter, that's pretty good to have an opinion. The biggest opinion I can have with this game is a negative one. The narrative of this game just does not exist. For all intents and purposes it's a poor man's Chinese version of cross between God of War and Elden Ring. Buttons/interface are Elden Ring, game itself is mainly action/combat more similar to God of War than Elden Ring.

Super linear that forces you to beat difficult bosses without any alternate route. When I say difficult some of the biggest difficulties have been when the boss his protected behind invisible walls or the game visually distorts your view you can barely defend yourself, more cheese versus skill-based.

This could've been the Chinese-God of War. But I guess Chinese folks didn't want to bother to share any part of this actual story that's going on.

You're a fighting monkey.....you run on a linear path and keep killing shit until the end. The end. There's bits and pieces of narration that don't make any sense to the western audience.

Fun action game and not much else. Does not deserve GotY but could see China spam the votes.

That's some of the criticism various reviewers had, that it actually doesn't tell the story well, it assumes you'd know it already (which might be true for their Chinese audience).

For sure.. not a scholar or anything but I know Journey To The West and it's definitely a vibe/backdrop more than a telling of the story… it is so sick though but yeah they're not telling the story as far as I can tell — there's no Xuanzang, I don't even think you are even supposed to be Sun Wukong except for in the opening… the Stone Monkey is in the stone and the myth the monkeys tell each other on the mountain. This is (seemingly so far) a "gaiden" that is not explaining the source.

But also things like turning into the Golden Cicada is next-level fan service, the characterization of even the fighting style and animation — they way you box bosses, dance around, and pester your opponent and just infuriate their expectations with your cheapness… smacking around arrogant Buddhists is awesome. Debating "who wore it better" this or Sekiro. Sekiro seems much tighter in it's storytelling so far.

Personally I feel like we had the "God of War" version with Enslaved and it was garbage. It's exactly what you would expect from Western design with escorting an annoying useless character who was also the main protag absorbing the story for you with over emphasis on narrative, yellow paint climbing, quipping during the simon says combat, fake RPG numbers, and so… much… talking.

Definitely see the problem if you care about the story, and it definitely points at a deeper problem — that AAA has been serving poison so long the standards for everything else has plummeted. I felt that more with Stellar Blade though… not sure how I'd feel about your points @Hinedorf if I didn't know the story and themes already. They took a lot of care with this game for sure though I think gamers would appreciate — shame if that doesn't come through.

Not a big issue for the as the gameplay seems solid, looking forward to playing it!

At the last boss .. Yellow Menace or something .. of Chapter 2. Head and shoulders above Chapter 1, which retrospectively is a long tutorial.

Souls comparisons does this a disservice. Game reminds me as much of Tecmo's Rygar and Ninja Gaiden (pre-Black) as anything.

Level design on par with the better Nioh 1 stages and finally there's some spicy encounters in Ch2. Monkey is way too strong in 1v1 against mobs, so I'm happy to see them layering them and bringing in new enemies at a nice clip.

I think it shares with FromSouls that a lot of mechanics and power ups you acquire create an "easy mode", and you can get away with not learning the core of combat pretty often. Besides the early kill of the first spirit, I haven't found a Father Gascoigne "you gon' learn today" wall yet, if there is one. Maybe the Stone Vagrant?
Either way the boss fights are fun as hell.

This game is fucken incredible. This so far is my goty contender. The amount of bosses and just cool fucken shit is unbelievable

Oh man I want to play that game on a high-end PC, gonna be awesome. Game looks like a lot of fun.

How do you find the progression and pacing?

You are always u locking some new spell or enemy skull. It's off the rauls the amount of skills there are. Pacing is pacing to me. I've never cared about slow or fast pacing. This game is hard from the beginning. The story is very vague and obtuse, alot of it is in the enemy codex. The game is just cool. It's what I wanted as a kid who watched monkey magic. So much detail in the graphics and environments. Alot of wow that looks amazing. Combat is very slick, deep if you want it to be. Or you just play the pop off all tour cool downs game. For a first time AAA game from this studio, it's fucken commendable. Better than any Western slop of the past 5 years.
