Thread: Best "New" IP To Come Out During The PS3/Xbox 360 Era

Japan? I'll pass thanks

  1. Nintendo
When I say new ip, I'm talking about a game with no sequels that was original for the time during the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 era.

My vote would go to Darksiders. Ever since the original game I fell in love with the series.

The other would be Mass Effect. To this day I consider it the best science fiction game to have ever been released. It was right up there with my other favorite, Star Control 2.

One other I can think of but I'm not sure if I can count it Demon's Souls. The reason for the gray area here is because it never actually had a direct sequel although it did kickstart the Soul series. However even Demon's Souls was a spiritual successor itself but I'll count it.

What was your favorite new IP that came out during this era?

MotorStorm, inFAMOUS, Valkyria Chronicles, Sleeping Dogs.

I enjoyed MotorStorm: Pacific Rift and Sleeping Dogs the most from that era. PS3 definitely had better new IPs and sequels to existing franchises than the Xbox 360. Uncharted, Killzone 2, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time etc. Plenty of good Japanese games too. Essentially felt like a continuation of the PS2 era which kind of stopped when the PS4 rolled around and certain beloved IPs became dormant. Most newer IPs now aren't nearly as interesting in my opinion.

Dumbest worldwide phenomenon ever: Minecraft what Is so special about it?

best idea from the era was definitely soulslikes since their actual video games
Disagree.

I adore Minecraft. I've been building worlds for years and it got me interested in studying architecture. Brilliant game.

to Me I'd rather just play with legos. it's a interesting game for sure but I don't get the hype for it.
I love Legos, but they're expensive and with Minecraft it's like I get infinite Legos for my projects.

It's also a great tool for kids to learn programming. My daughter goes wild with the command block and learns a lot of programming logic with it.

I just realized that Mass Effect came out in that gen and they also managed to kill the IP before the gen was over. It was my faorite IP at the time now all that is left is regret and hatred. :ROFLMAO:

Dragon Age, another IP that started great went downhill pretty fast as well. Fucking Bioware...

Taking into account where the IPs stand today I would go with Uncharted. There is still so much they can explore using that IP and we got 2 master pieces out of that franchise already Uncharted 2 and Uncharted 4 and the other games are all very good as well. To me they could easily reinvent the IP by setting game in different time periods while preserving some key characteristics of the IP.

I could've gone with Dark Souls but it looks like From Software is able to create new IPs like it's nothing.

I agree, but I think the roots of these two are in the prior generation with Guitar Hero.

Guitar Hero was derivative of stuff that came before it, too. I think Rock Band blows it out of the water so that's why I included it.

DJ Hero was/is my fav rhythm game from that gen, except for maybe Patapon*

I still have the turntable. What I liked best about DJ Hero is the mixes were original to the game. You weren't just playing various radio hits (though that's pretty fun, too), you were listening to new mashups. Maybe that was unsustainable because they only made 2 games and neither game had a lot of DLC. Good while it lasted.

*That's another entry for the thread: Patapon trilogy on the PSP. Amazing new IP. Three games in quick succession, and then dead.

2 was the best. 3 had some interesting ideas but the loss of real armies was dumb. Played waaaaay too many hours in 2 because of all the stuff you could farm and grind.

Dunno how the series could've been expanded. Maybe move it to 3D but maintain the fixed-path marching structure?

And now there are so few new IP attempts. Just tons of sequels and remakes. I like remakes, personally, but I just don't like the absence of new IP. Let's get some more funky new shit out there.
Sony has created a single new IP this gen (Returnal) and they have no new IP announced for the future. Massive change of direction compared to the past generations.

I still fire up Rock Band on PS3 from time to time.

Amazing Rank
Bioshock 1-2 only.
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Dragon Age Origins only.
Dragon's Dogma
Dark Souls
Dead Space 1-2 only.
Dantes Inferno - Maybe its better it was only one game?
F.E.A.R 1 only.
Mass Effect 1 story only, 2 for combat, presentation and characters.
Uncharted
The Witcher
Xenoblade Chronicles (Was a giant slog to get through and would not be fully realized until the Definitive Edition on Switch.)

Good Rank
Assassin's Creed but only 2, Brotherhood and arguably Black Flag are this good. It slides off a cliff afterwards.
Borderlands 1-2
Infamous 1-2
Prototype 1 only
Valkyria Chronicles

Okay Rank
Singularity

Got bored Rank
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
Darksiders even though it had a interesting concept
Resistance: Fall of Man

Haven't Played:
Gears of War
Lair
Heavenly Sword
Killzone

I'm glad that one was fucking awesome at least. That's exactly the kind of weird new shit I want to see more of.
We'll go more than 10 years without new IP from ND and SSM is fast approaching 20 years.

Now it's starting to look like the reason Sony was so willing to try new IPs in the past was simply due to the lack of commercial success. The thing is commercial success for Sony is selling 10m+.

This makes me respect studios like From Software even more, zero fear of dropping successful IPs to do something else.

Even Nintendo has tried very unconventional stuff like Pikmin, Splatoon, Arms. Took on Xenoblade, greenlit Bayonetta 2 both franchises became big with Xenoblade now one of Nintendos biggest RPGs only really behind Fire Emblem and Pokemon in that aspect.

Got the rights to Astral Chain, really hoping this franchise takes off with a sequel or two. Very cool game right there. Nintendo somehow (money probably) managed to snag Vanillaware ports of 13 Sentinels and Grimgrimoire Once More.

Sony was pretty good at that stuff in the past, I'd say up until most of the PS4 generations we were still getting stuff like Until Dawn, Bloodborne, Dreams, Detroit, Death Stranding, The Last Guardian, Resogun, etc. Honest attempts at some new stuff. As of right now just don't see where similar games would be coming from this gen.

Now all their smaller project seem to be for for VR (even then they don't seem to have that many compared to when the first PSVR came out) and their strategy seems to be moneyhating indie games that look good like Stray and Kena.

All their big AAA devs are occupied with sequels and they don't have the smaller/mid-sided studios anymore and don't even seem to have the partners for that stuff.
