Thread: Avatar 2 is now titled Avatar: The Way of Water
A friend of mine has rich parents so they had one of the early 4K TVs that also did 3D. So naturally one night he and I were hanging out there and we decided to put the Avatar 3D blu ray on.

We were both bored within 30 minutes. The movie just did not hold up for me in any way. It was probably a few years after I had seen it in a theater. There's some extremely corny shit.

Social media is abuzz in overseas markets where Disney today began rollout on a remastered version of James Cameron's original 2009 Avatar, and as audiences are being treated to sneak footage from the upcoming sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water.

The studio isn't commenting, but based on myriad Twitter posts, there appears to be a short glimpse of The Way of Water tagged onto the end of Avatar. What's more, and evidently depending on the market and/or cinema, the footage being shown is not the same in every instance. What is pretty uniform is positive reaction (see a selection of tweets below).

Avatar today notably rereleased in Korea and France, and will add all international markets this weekend except for Spain (which goes on September 30), China (where it was already reissued in 2021) and Russia. The 4K high dynamic range version will be playing on over 8,000 offshore screens (with about 50% in 3D). North America releases on Friday.

It's unclear if this taste of Way of Water will be offered in every market, however it would stand to reason as Disney whets appetites for the highly-anticipated sequel.

I saw the kids swimming footage at a HFR screening of the original.
The original still looks better than almost everything. The sequel is a gigantic leap forward. I cannot find the words to describe how real and immersive it looked.

lol I'm not sure if I even know anyone left in the world who can go 2 hours without desperately needing to look at their phones. It'll be fun watching the types of casuals who will flock to an Avatar movie go 3 whole hours plus previews without checking tiktok and instagram 17 times.

I liked the shot of a navi stomping on a human skull like the terminator in the begining of Terminator 2.

Really shows both where these sequels will likely be heading (subjugation, destruction of humanity) and what the director thinks of humanity.

Ie there is nothing redeeming.

So sick of this shit. We don't have anything to claim the mantle of Hope Star Wars and Superman once held. I don't think there ever will be another at this rate.

>doubting James Cameron

When will they learn?

Indeed. I wasn't overly impressed with the storyline in the first film, however, there's no denying the technical aspects and I dare say that Cameron is pushing the envelope even further here. Will still probably wait for the reviews, but if they prove compelling then I can see a Cinema visit resulting.

tbh there were a couple shots that didn't look great to me from an animation standpoint. Almost on the level of Spiderman 2002 lol

Just a few frames here or there where it got jerky, obviously it is going to be a visual spectacle.

It looks nice and all, but I don't get it: So it's the same plot as the first movie? Humans appear, Navii fight back, the end?
Were you shocked by the ending of Titanic? Cameron is not a great story teller and never has been, he's a cinema visuals genius who gets far too much credit for the other things in his work that are mediocre.

Wrong. Cameron is a great storyteller. He can take a simple plot and get you engaged in it. This isn't just a visuals thing. He knows how to structure screenplays and pace the story. He also makes it easy for you to suspend your disbelief: you won't find any glaring plot holes in his movies and his characters don't act stupid. Few big budget movies can achieve this.

The famous Pocahontas 2 scene of the transhuman bad guy crushing his own skull.

Felt that about the whole trailer.

Its not that it looked bad, but we have seen these "live action" movies that are all CGI now for a decade. Its not really impressive anymore. It looked like the first one, which was what like 10 years ago?

I thought that his body was a clone body? So they give the clone body full on reproductive organs with blue semen and blue testicles? The whole 9 yards? Or did that magic mumbo jumbo Chucky body transfer also transfer his sperm into the clone body?

Dude I will never doubt James. I'm going to see this in 3D at the biggest theatre possible.

Speaking to Total Film magazine, Cameron said he's prepared to cut his franchise short should "The Way of Water" and "Avatar 3" underperform at the box office.

"The market could be telling us we're done in three months, or we might be semi-done, meaning: 'OK, let's complete the story within movie three, and not go on endlessly,' if it's just not profitable," Cameron said.

"We're in a different world now than we were when I wrote this stuff, even," the filmmaker continued. "It's the one-two punch — the pandemic and streaming. Or, conversely, maybe we'll remind people what going to the theatre is all about. This film definitely does that. The question is: how many people give a shit now?"

But should the first two "Avatar" sequels fail at the box office, Cameron is already prepared to make the third movie a fitting franchise conclusion. The director already said earlier this year that he might not direct the fourth and fifth "Avatar" movies, should they get made.

"The 'Avatar' films themselves are kind of all-consuming," Cameron told Empire magazine. "I've got some other things I'm developing as well that are exciting. I think eventually over time — I don't know if that's after three or after four — I'll want to pass the baton to a director that I trust to take over, so I can go do some other stuff that I'm also interested in. Or maybe not. I don't know."

Cameron added, "Movie 4 is a corker. It's a motherfucker. I actually hope I get to make it. But it depends on market force. Three is in the can so it's coming out regardless. I really hope that we get to make 4 and 5 because it's one big story, ultimately."

That's an interesting thing to be bringing up a month before Avatar 2 comes out. Hedging his bets?

Also the potential of an Avatar 4 and 5 but without Cameron directing? No thanks. Cameron directing is the entire draw for me. Course Cameron moving on to a different project could very well be for the better (Unless he goes old guy and starts making dramas).

Loved the first one back then in cinema.
But mang, computer graphics have come such a long way since then, and like Cameron says, streaming and just being in your own room with a nice OLED tv and good audio setup trumps going to cinemas these days for me.

So, hard for me to get excited about this.

This movie makes me extremely flacid. The first movie was woke before woke was a thing. I remember cheering for the humans, not the blue aliens. Cameron just said in an interview that he thinks testosterone is a toxin that needs to be worked out of men's systems. I have no desire to support this soy movie and personally I hope it flops. The fact that modern critics like it should tell you everything you need to know.

Yeah but I don't care. Cameron can be a giant retard but the man is one of the best directors around. It will be interesting to see if he still has it as he hasn't released anything in years. I am sure there will be a lot of living as one mumbo jumbo but I want more of Pandora. The first movie might have had a generic story but no other movie has come close to the 3D experience/world that he created.

The fact many are saying this is better than the first is getting me hyped. I am hoping for a more engaging story but even if it is just more spectacle like the first then I will watch the shit out of it many times like I did the first.

I think I am too old to enjoy this one as much as the first, even if its good.

When I saw Avatar in theaters I had just smoked a fat blunt of killer bud and was tweaking on way too much Adderall. I was there with a shit eating grin and 3d glasses on my face the whole time. Was amazing!
