I don't know enough about anime to make a proper OT layout.

Let this be the thread where we discuss anime.

I'm currently watching Doomed Megalopolis (1991), it's on a variety of free streaming platforms. I think I'm watching it on Tubi. Pluto TV is another good free service with a worthwhile selection. Amazon Prime as well. Archive DOT org too of course, and YouTube itself. It's nice to know that not everything is locked behind the CrunchyRoll paywall. Hell, even something that is, Blue Seed Season 1, is on Pluto TV for free, lol.

Doomed Megalopolis is pretty wild. The animation is really impressive and it's incredibly dark. It's a 4-episode OVA, based on some kind of book series. There's also a live-action movie from 1988. I'll have to check that out. I've only watched episode 1 but I really dug it, flacid dong parasite notwithstanding. 😅

I also recently watched (based on a recommendation from another member), Angel Cop.

Angel Cop was dope, violent as hell and one of the most batshit plots I've seen. Starts with Special Forces killing communists and then it just completely jumps the shark, lol. 5 or 6 episodes long.

The absolute gem I stumbled on is this though,

That movie is dope as hell and highly recommended. To me it was like an OVA for a Souls game. It's really similar in a lot of ways. Originally released in 1989. Assuming the dub is from 1998. Awesome movie.

Also really enjoyed Demon City Shinjuku. That and Blood Reign are the perfect type of anime for me. Not a ton of weird erotica, if any, great characters, action, atmosphere, and music. The total package for me.

I enjoyed DCS so much that I ordered the vinyl when I saw the OST isn't on streaming and the main track I wanted to hear hadn't been uploaded to YT. So here's my gift to you D-Pad. Enjoy. (The track I wanted to hear most was Theme of Lar)

(Theme of Old Man Ray is a banger, cued up below)

I love anime, but am super picky about what I watch. I rarely tell people i like it cuz they immediately ask if i am watching (insert series).

Currently I am watching Ronin Warriors. I remembered sort of liking it in the 90s. However I am not feeling it now. But i'll keep watching the series so I can grade it in its totality.

That's one that's on my list to revisit. I remember it was on some random channel when I was kid, my best friend went ape shit over it but I never did catch it on TV.

I don't have time to watch anything but I can sneak in some reading, and it seems like they're all basically 1:1 adaptions. Been loving Shangri-la Frontier (Vol 12) and Dandadan (Vol 3).

Lately I've been watching anime series with each new season that comes. Have seen some bangers in recent years that made me enjoy the medium again. Stuff like:

MV5BYWFhOWMxNTYtZThiMi00ZmQ5LTlmODktN2QwNzUyZjMyZGQzXkEyXkFqcGc@._V1_FMjpg_UX1000_.jpg

I'd add more but I'm trying to keep my post brief. Currently I'm following a few new shows this season. Aside from Season 2 of The Apothecary Diaries, there's also:

If you haven't watched Interspecies Reviewers are you even a fan of anime?

Just finished up with Solo Leveling the other day and it's great fun, annoyed that we have to wait until 2026/27 to see it continue, assuming it does. It certainly has the popularity and fandom so I think a S3 is a given at this point.

Anyone bothered with Moonrise yet? I hear good things and have it ready to go, so I think I'll watch that next. Kaiju No.8 was also great but ends on such a blue balls cliffhanger. Need that second season immediately.

Im a on and off watcher and more of a Manga reader , cancelled my CR subscription I've had for years because it wasn't used enough to justify having it.
I think the last anime I watched bits and pieces of was Demon Slayer but never finished, I tend to watch the older stuff than newer if in the mood

It just dawned on me that Slitterhead is 80s/90s Anime as can be.

Phallic enemies and all.

Game just took on a new meaning to me and I appreciate it even more now, ha.

Most recently, watched Kaiju No.8, a bit of Frieren, a bit of Mashle Magic and Muscle, and some SpyxFamily.

Also watched through The Boy and the Heron a few times in the last few months. It continues to grow on me. Having watched and rewatched so many Ghibli films over the years, they all slowly lose their fairy-tale mystery. This one has a faint strangeness to it that is hard to nail down and therefore maintains its sense of fairy-tail mystery even after several rewatches. It is proving itself to be one of Ghibli's best films.

Bout time someone made an anime thread. I'm so out of the loop on modern stuff other than Demon Slayer. I will be taking notes. As far as classic stuff goes though there's:

Gunsmith Cats - Babes and guns, what's not to like?
Cowboy Bebop - The best gateway anime by far
Rurouni Kenshin - Worth getting into just for the sheer amount of multimedia there is now with the manga, the anime, and the live action movies. Kenshin really became a big thing
Trigun
One Punch Man - First season is awesome and has one of the best intro themes ever made
Slayers - Fun for a while, though the focus on Lina Inverse over every other character gets tiresome after a while. The movies are a bit more fun than the series because of:

I used to like Rumiko Takahashi shows but they all get tiresome long before the story actually ends.

Dragonball is kind of shit these days, but still worth following because of Vegeta, literally the only interesting character in the entire franchise

Anyone ever watch Superbook as a kid? It's a Christian cartoon series where 2 kids and their robot friend get sucked into the Bible and live through various scriptures. 😅

Pretty sure it's from Canada but they contracted the animation out to Japan. It's so damn cool and the title track is a banger all day.

Happy Easter Week

No Hunter x Hunter? No JoJo?

If you haven't watched Interspecies Reviewers are you even a fan of anime?

And Monster Musume. It kills every time I watch that I'll never have a snek or slime wife.

Yeah this stuff was so cheesy. I watched it on VHS tapes as a kid. There's a newer CGI series of Superbook too

Yeah JoJo Parts 1-6 is some of the best manga/anime Ive ever read/seen. Still need to read Steelball Run, and 8/9?

Added Spy X Family. Incredible stuff and I still think it's only scratching it's potential
(going ahead into full science fiction/fantasy beyond the usual stuff in a already fantastical 60s spy setting with psionics and superhuman abilities.

I have a growing suspicion Anya might actually be a Princess from the Kingdom that's implied to have been overthrown by the Soviet like Eastalis. Her name is not Anya and she's very oddly good at classical writing.

Berserk would be there, but the massive delays and the author passing away will always be a what if. Similar situation to Familar of Zero which was never finished due to that author passing away also.

Did not get the hype for Hunter X Hunter. The clown was an absolute psychotic bastard but the Joker, It, Kafka and various Yu-Gi-Oh villains have already done that shtick. (Original series, though I hear GX has absolute batshit stuff.)

Need to read/see Dungeon Meshi and Frieren. Both seem to be the major current fantasy works.

Also continue with Dragon Quest Adventure of Dai and Thunderbolt Fantasy.

Heck yeah. The Philippines being a Christian country, this and Flying House were both staples for me growing up. It's where I learned most of the Bible stories (too lazy to read the real thing). I'm still amazed that the Japanese would bother making an animated series about a religion they don't worship, but I guess it was a work for hire job. In this case, it was Tatsunoko Studios being hired by the CBN (Christian Broadcasting Network).

Kind of like One Piece, you have to wait until a few arcs in for HxH to get good because the first few arcs are building the setting. It's not just crazy clown man. It's more of an ensemble cast anime anyway.

Though if you don't like getting invested in things unlikely to end HxH probably isn't a good idea. Togashi is 100% going to die before HxH organically ends.

I got up to Gons super form, and also not Cells! death.

That's basically the end of the manga in terms of complete arcs anyway. The next arc has gone on for over a decade I believe.

TBH, if the Chimera Ant arc didn't grab you, it probably just isn't for you.

Very cool. I love the Philippines. I've been there a few times and I worked with a ton of Filipinos in the Navy. My cousin also married a first generation Filipino migrant, awesome family. I've seen comments referencing Flying House on YT SuperBook videos, I'll have to check it out.

Speaking of Christianity, Wicked City surprised me with the overt Christian imagery at the end, considering Japan isn't a Christ-centric nation. It honestly saved the movie for me when I watched it last week, I had completely forgotten most of the grape scenes, but the Christian imagery made it more of a God vs the Devil type story and of course demons are going to defile something pure.

Japan views Christian iconography and the "expanded mythology" (Judaism, Islam, and associated mysticisms) like we do the Greek gods. It is kind of like a decoration usually. Animistic religions tend to be accepting of other gods anyway. See Eva, Shin Megami Tensei, etc.

That's cool. Filipino migrant workers are always heavily favored in other countries because they actually bother to try and adapt to another culture and learn the language. I have numerous relatives who've lived and worked in the United States for decades and raised families there.

The Japanese (especially manga/anime creators) have this weird relationship with Judeo Christian imagery and belief. They really don't buy into the religion itself, but care more for how cool the imagery and concepts are. You'll see it properties like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Shin Megami Tensei and even hentai like Bible Black.

How funny, I was going to say the exact same thing about Filipinos but didn't want to wade into it, lol. They really are an asset to any community they're in within America.

Very interesting on the second point. I can absolutely see that now that I think about it.

Don't know how I missed this, but Parts 7-9 are must reads too. They are basically remixes of other parts (7 is 1 with bits of 2 and 3, 8 is 3 and 4, and 9 looks to be 5 and likely 6, though it is early) but are more like seinen. Still have shonen-esque Stand battles though, and the Stands are generally weirder in design than 3-6's.

SBR is amazing and I am keeping up with Jojolands (pretty fun so far), but I haven't had a chance to delve too far into Jojolion (the fanbase is kind of mixed on it - it has a lot of "Araki forgot" shit in it where Araki's ADHD kicked in and scrubbed set up plot points in it).

Personally I thought it was outstanding right from the start. They introduce everyone well enough the first two episodes and then it's off to the races from there. You're right about the cast, everyone plays their own part and it's great. Oda is the king of characters overall but Togashi might be even better at developing characters. Like if he were in good health, just imagine where HxH could have gone all these years with a steady progression… Gon and Killua from age 11-18 let's say a total of seven years adventuring. Some of of the wildest arcs of all time happen in HxH just imagine what they'd do with years of experience and training under their belt with they highly skilled world building that Togashi possesses

@Zeta Dragoon HxH is a bit like One Piece. It's hard to accurately put it, but HxH is more 'dire' in the sense of the world just being extremely brutal and the characters exude more evil than One Piece characters do. But with Hunter x Hunter, the adventuring is outstanding. Characters are all excellent. Fights are different from One Piece but more rewarding because death is constant in HxH, very cutthroat fights and moments all throughout the anime. Gon and Killua are tough as nails but they're also like only age 11 so Togashi does a tremendous job of making them both incredible fighters but realistically vulnerable and in danger constantly in a way no other mangaka has been able to achieve imo. It's a one of a kind experience and an excellent adventure
