I have to correct my statement regarding the RT shadows, screenshots don't really show the improvement here. Depending on the scene, vanilla shadows even on the highest setting, can look god damn ugly and flickery. RT shadows massively improve that. Still don't think they're worth the performance hit. But here you go with a comparison capturing the visual and performance impact. Also notice the improved self shadowing from her hair.

3080, 8700k, 4k maxed, DLSS Performance

No RT shadows

RT shadows

Just went back to the game, loaded up another area. Can confirm it. If you enable RT shadows, the AO is gone.

What the fuck are they doing. Why release this shit, how didn't they notice. Pretty sad display of incompetence here. I understand it's new tech and they have to learn how to implement it but man, that's some amateur stuff right there. Introducing a feature that costs a bunch of performance and also disables all the AO, making the game look worse in most scenes.

Great job.

It's not just that, though, is it?

A proper ray-traced GI makes light fall off appear more realistic, so areas like those under awnings, or even just under furniture, etc. are accurately lit instead of appearing unnaturally bright or have light bleed through them.
It is assumed that if you have RT that you'll attenuate light bounce over a distance as to not have a scene blown out.

Yeah the screenshots are from SDR, the game does look better on my OLED with HDR.
Yea, that makes a big difference. The overblown washout intensity is negated.

Doesn't change things like faces or bodies looking flat in vanilla because their brightness is the same, no matter the angle and direction of the light coming in.
That's because skin shaders don't run ambient occlusion for whatever reason. Even Cyberpunk has flat shaded colored skin when the character is in shadow.

Same here.. bummer. The RT shadows are way too expensive to render the AO as well. AO is possibly the most expensive shader in today's games. That's why we see very little of it used for GI light probes. One day we can have both when the GPUs are more powerful.

Liberal use of AO + RT shadows = too expensive. It is what it is.

It's still strange. Don't see any other game ditching AO if you turn of RT shadows, not even if other RT effects are being added. Maybe it's a bug in the end, would be weird but possible. If it's their decision to remove AO, then it's a bad one.

I don't think it's a bug. They have several light sources in the game and rendering the transparency cards where it has to evaluate shadows of dynamic objects is very costly.

Game is alright. The ending is about what I expected so I'm not disappointed. Some pacing is jumbled and sometimes it feels like the game is trying to impress you at every turn like when chapter 2 starts with a fair and a minute later there's mountains of corpses out of nowhere, some side characters are kinda awful (Sophia), but the journey is interesting and the mystery you uncover is intriguing. I especially liked the open world segment on the island.

I don't want them to turn it into Assassin's Creed though.

60fps performance mode for consoles got released!

oshiiiiii I was hoping this would get a patch. Really beautiful game. I think I'll replay it with my wife. I didn't even play the first one but I was interested enough in this one as a standalone to buy it. Focus Entertainment has published a looooot of my favorite B-tier games from the last 5 years, I really like their output.

Definitely play the first one. It's a Gem.

still not played this yet, how does it rate compared to the first one?

Well, I pretty much loved the first one. It came together so well, story, gameplay, characters. Amicia especially, one of my favorite female characters in all of gaming. The second one felt off for me and didn't grab me so far. I bounced off multiple times. While I cared a lot about the characters in the first game, Requiem failed to make me care about anything. Though I have to say I didn't finish it, far from it, and will definitely come back to it to give it another shot. Visuals are beautiful and it plays well.

Game is okay but they got a bigger budget to work with and lost subtlety of original. Every level is a big set piece now, gets tiresome. I did like the story for the most part and how it ended.
