Today I'm very excited to announce that PlayStation Studios has grown again with the addition of long-time partner Bluepoint Games! From the exceptional PS5 remake of Demon's Souls to the critically acclaimed PS4 remake of Shadow of the Colossus and remasters of fan favorites like Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, Bluepoint has built a name for itself by creating some of the highest-quality remasters and remakes in the industry.

With each of its projects, Bluepoint has raised the bar on console-defining visuals and gameplay, and the studio's vast expertise in world building and character creation will be a huge plus for future PlayStation Studios properties.

Welcome to the PlayStation Studios family, Bluepoint!

Please be surprised (!)

Seriously though a great get. Look forward to playing their games on PC. What a fuck up they accidentally announced it unofficially months ago.

Metal Gear 2/3 Collection, Uncharted Trilogy, Shadow of the Colossus and Demons' Soul's have all been amazing.

And apparently Demon's Souls sold more than 1.4M copies so far. Pretty good, but I wish more people bought it.

Of the 6 people I know in real life who have a PS5, only 2 of us bought DS, so it's not shocking. It's not a mass appeal Mario launch game or something. But it's so damn well done that I wish more people would buy it.

Not bad for a launch title exclusive. It will sell really well on PC.

Not surprising, but still a fantastic acquisition. If Sony hadnt scooped them up someone else would have. But since Sony and them have a solid history working together, it should be a fairly smooth transition for all parties.

Here's the thing, tho - most remasters/remakes seem to sell well, so obviously they aren't a waste of time. You might not like them, but I also don't like sports games and yet they still get made and I accept the fact that others do like/want them.

I disagree. Now, where does that leave us?
It leaves us with less games. Shadow of the Colossus remake could have been Shadow of the Colossus 2 and Demon's Souls remake could have been Demon's Souls 2. That's the amount of resources they take. Remasters of the originals are fine.

It's one thing for a dev to make a remaster/remake and spruce up the visuals and make slight tweaks to other systems, but to expect those same devs to make an actual sequel to a beloved game/franchise? When they have never even made an original game of their own? I don't think that's reasonable.

I'm told remakes are still considerably less resources than making an entirely new game. It's literally a recipie of a game laid out for them, if you will, compared to making a new game.

I think it might be more work intensive to remake the game from scratch to be exactly the same than to just do something original. It don't have to be sequels to these particular games. Should have just remastered the original for PS4/PS5/PC and make whatever new "Souls".

Yea, I could get behind what you're saying if it was a dev like, say, Sony Santa Monica. Where they have a lot of talent and a proven track record. It wouldn't make any sense to have them working on remasters/remakes. But if you're a dev that specializes in remakes/remasters and has little or no experience or talent in crafting a good story and characters, coming up with creative and fun gameplay, etc., what's wrong with letting that highly specialized team continue to do what they're good at? Especially if there are a lot of people waiting with wallets in hand. I don't see that as a waste at all.

Disagree. Remakes are a waste of time and resources.
For me it depends on the game. If they announced a remake of Snatcher or Vice City I'd be very excited. I was happy for KOTOR being announced for about an hour.

I'm not shocked, but I am disappointed. Sony customers gain nothing, while everyone else loses potentially great games from them, ever getting made in the future for other platforms.

I think what Sony "gains" is the ability to maintain the status quo. BP has had a few suitors recently and its clear that had Sony not aquired them, someone else would have. So, yea doesn't really change much for us as gamers, but if you are a PS player you at least keep what you had.

I don't know if crafting stories and designing gameplay is really the challenge. Indie devs make hundreds of games every year. Creating high quality assets and optimizing them for consoles, that's where all the money and effort goes. And in case with both Bluepoint remakes it's kind of a waste since the originals are fine. Just needed some upscaling.

Ultimately if they needed some people with game design experience they could have hired some.

Just a few hours into Demon's Souls on PS5 and it's absolutely one of my favorite games ever made. It's totally a tragedy games like this don't sell better. Interested to see how they handle an original game.

If I could actually get my hands on a PS5 DS would be one of the first games I buy but there is no way in hell I'm paying scalper prices and have basically stopped trying. Still look like once a week but it gets old fast chasing after some mythical console and TBH the more time goes on the less I care to get one.

Chances they're working on a MGS remake/remaster/sequel?
From what I hear, they are actually working on a original project. At least according to Twitter. I'd post the Twitter post but can't seem to find it yet.

But still, that's a very interesting approach for a studio known for remakes/remasters. Will be interesting to see what they make if it's true.
