Thread: Switch 2 announced! (NatetheHate: Nintendo Switch 2 will be announced on Thursday, January 16)
Hype Thread
During the Wii/3DS days, I was kinda anti-Nintendo.

I had this shiny space-age PS3 and people would bring over their Fisher Price Toy Box and the bowling game required so little genuine dexterity that you could just flick your wrist while sitting down and get a strike. The 3DS needed a bizarre frankenstein tumor attachment while I was using my slick, sexy new Vita.

Nintendo just looked like it was making bullshit to me. The Mario Kart game that used a plastic steering wheel attachment for the worst controls ever was an abomination. I wanted no part of it. But they've really won me back. It's still not a "main console" for me, but it's a fantastic second system.

I shit you not, I literally just read this post with this gem playing in the background and didn't even realize the irony till the song changed.

I wasn't picked in their horribly implemented hands on event sweepstakes. Now I have to hope I can hit the waitlist on Wednesday. The way they handled this drawing is way worse than the fact that Pokémon snap is full price.

I did the pre event in Atlanta for the GameCube

Also got to be on the main showfloor hours before the doors opened at E3 for a few years before it left the Convention center. Got to spend a good bit of time with Prime2 because it was right across from the IGN "HQ" booth that year.

Were you working with/for IGN back then??

We were contracted to do the live livewire show, pre conferences and film/edit the yearly booth babe montage.. We produced IGN/Gamespy LiveWire for 4 years (2004-2007). Most exhausting part was always the pre conferences. We were constantly fucked especially early on because of the infrastructure limitations. We drank A LOT.

In a crazy turn of events, we might.... I don't believe I'm actually saying it..... we might become a Switch 2 owning household.

This timeline is bizarre.

In a crazy turn of events, someone on a gaming forum gets a system that can play excellent games that are exclusive to the system?

I honestly don't know how someone who enjoys the medium somehow can NOT own a Nintendo console.

Mouse controls confirmed for Switch 2 via patent:

I can't wait to see what they come up with for it. Shooters are going to be great on this thing too.

The question is whether you prefer to sit back and play with a game controller or sit up and use a mouse. In the case of Switch 2, there's no keyboard, so what are you actually doing? One hand gets to move the joystick in a traditional controller way while the other is trying to use the right joycon as a mouse?? Would you place a book or similar hard surface on an arm rest to make this work?

I think the mouse functionality would only be suited to tabletop mode. I don't think there's any way to do it on the sofa or whatnot, at least not without some kind of peripheral.

The amount of things I've used as a mouse surface surpasses my ability to remember. "Nearest piece of sofa" and "own leg" are both definitely on the list.

Mouse plus half a gamepad is a near-ideal way to play shooters. You get precision aiming with the mouse, analog movement with the stick, and a bunch of extra controls. Plus you still have gyro. And modern optical mice work even in absurdly suboptimal conditions. Not even expensive ones.

Also the lack of a keyboard is absurdly easy to fix. The Switch is already dockable. Just make a keyboard dock for it. Lots of examples out there, even for phones. Give it a hinge and it'll double as a cover. Could even have extra USB ports or hold spare carts.

What if MS partners up with Nintendo and the big launch title is Mario Excel and Legend of Zelda Word document. You could get the whole Office 365 x Mario. Like imagine before having to do a sum formula you needed to collect 100 coins. Or to make a resume you needed to win a race of Mario Kart.
New Super Mario Power Point with Ray tracing and DLSS with dynamic 4k resolution and 60 FPS. The accounting and HR department audience for videogames is may undeserved. You go to your cubicle and instead of your desktop you now have a switch 2 with Meteoid outlook. To set your calender you need to beat motherbrain and you can only reply to all if you backtrack and get the ice beam.

I'm stoked for this upcoming platform! Hopefully, it'll also be available for pre-order through Nintendo's online store, too! 😊

This.

Even then, a 1080p blu ray still looks better than streamed 4K for video.
4K streaming will never come close to the superior quality from a 4K Blu-Ray disc, because movies on 4K Blu-Ray discs have more bitrates.

Not to mention that trying to stream stuff in native 4K will take more bandwidth & processing power, as not only will it need a minimum of 25 Mbps internet speed for smooth playback, it also needs to handle a much larger amount of data to display a higher quality image.

Those things mean that 4K streaming will consume more data & demand a faster internet connection, & in which will start putting more strain on a device's CPU & GPU.

It's also made worse by the ever increasing costs involved and mass of data needing to be shifted to more and more people.

There's a reason streaming services need to constantly expand their users or raise prices, or both, and it's because of the fact they always have to offer more content while retaining as much of what they have as possible.

Thus, an easy solution is to reduce the bandwidth and lower picture quality, especially at the lower cost tiers they don't really make any money on that most people use.

More broadly we're already butting up against the laws of physics in regards to exactly how much data can be transferred how quickly over long distances, especially when you're trying to do so within the confines of a financially viable business model.

It's likely a big part of why so many tech companies are going all in on generative AI, because it can fill in the gaps that are created by a remote connection to a server.

NS2 News and Mario Kart 9 cannot come fast enough. Maybe there will also be a new Pro Controller too? I kind of doubt it, but it would be nice if there was one planned

If they upgrade to analog triggers they will have to.

Of course, they don't believe in quality parts like that, but i can still dream.

I'd like to see Hall Effect Joysticks and Analog Triggers become the standard. The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is this close to being the GOAT controller. Just needs an excellent Dpad and Analog Triggers for shooters. The feel to that thing is phenomenal; just feels premium all around. Can't wait until April 2nd when all the news and information is revealed for NS2 tbh. I'm pulling for that month of May launch window

Here's my predictions, there won't be hall effect joysticks in ns2. They'll have the same similar dumpy build quality of the og switch. Analog triggers, maybe. As for a May release date? No chance. Releasing a console in the spring is kinda goofy, and tbh I can't recall any console of note being released in the springtime. It'll be announced at this event in April and go on sale in the fall.

That sir, is my prediction.

Game Boy was released in April (Japan), and I'd bet on hall effect. Must have cost them a small fortune replacing Joy-Cons for free.

OG Switch was released in March, wasn't it? I can't see them doing a big reveal in four weeks, followed by all those hands on events shortly thereafter.... and then making people wait several more months before the actual release. I could be wrong, but I'm betting on a late May or early June release.
