I just want to know if Elon lost his mind or not at the character creation screen. 🤷

Yes but if you ignore the awful story, characters and writing is this story and character driven RPG with extensive dialogue options then you will find that the game is actually good!

I read in the Good Boys Only thread for Avowed that the game is fantastic.

Actually, I've seen multiple people enjoying the writing. Comes down to taste I guess, as so often. I find the game kinda interesting, the good exploration is something that I always enjoy and the visuals on high-end PCs look great.

I'm surprised that this rotten activist team made a competent game, but I won't touch it after that absolute shit show with Matt Hansen, these people get nothing from me.

Don't forget the shitty framerate. You need to ignore that, too. PC Gamer says so.

Of the 4 or so reviews I've seen, the writing doesn't seem up to par. It's obviously a subjective thing, but given how much I have enjoyed the written work in previous Obsidian games, this seems like a very obvious slide in quality especially as so much of the character writing seems to be exposition.

Now, as someone who hasn't played the game, I have a very limited scope with which to judge this game, but several reviews have made observations about the writing that seems incredibly offputting to me.

This is a shame as the Pillars games are supposedly very rich both lore and character-wise!

The handholding is apparently comically awful. The second you pick up a key a character is telling you what it's for. They obviously think their audience is retarded. Hang on a sec....

Back then, I thought that interactivity with the world would only get better, deeper and more meaningful.

Sigh.

It still disappoints me that we have gone from Oblivion/Crysis/GTAIV to Elden Ring and Avowed. I was honestly just disappointed coming from BotW where you could set fire to a field of grass to kill an army of baddies to Elden Ring where you can wield fire but nothing in the environment will even burn and can't chop down any bushes or trees. In Crysis you could mow down the jungle with your gun.

Video games have lost the point.

After Crysis, I thought the future of gaming was bright, destruction, interactive environments. Far Cry series build on that a bit with the fires but that's it. Mostly because of the super weak CPUs of the last generation, it just stopped for the most part. I really hope interactivity will be revived starting with the next gen.

They're absolutely hideous. Sad, because I think the environments look pretty good despite the oversaturation.

I'll be honest, the character design probably would have pushed me away from buying this game, but thankfully it's on Game Pass.

Well they got your money either way, might as well use them.

Yeah, I'm still subscribed for Indiana Jones, so this is just a nice bonus. Hopefully I end up having a great time. If nothing else, it seems like the intro 6 ~ 8 hours is really well done.

I've seen both. Even or reeee some people be shitting on the writing. Seems everyone is all over the place (but they always manage to find a defense or just lower the bar aka "why it's a good thing"). Plus it's hard to get an idea of what anyone's standard of 'good' is. Good compared to what? Veilguard? Pillars? New Vegas?

You're saying good exploration but I watched that video from that Italian girl upthread who said the second you go off path the game barks you back onto the objectives, and rewards for going off path are useless. SkillUp said only thing that encourages exploration is xp level gating. 🤷

Have only seen footage on my phone, where it looks like a 2010s game that Witcher 3 would subsequently blow out of the water. Combat looks decent though.

Regawdless is a notorious Obsidian and Matt Hanson shill. Disgusting.

When did the whole "it's just grifters hating on the game" thing start?

I know there was Ghostbusters 2016 and The Last Jedi with movies where the idea was that the only possible way you could dislike the movies was if you were a troll.

People really starting to believe this shit in the gaming sphere now too.

Like there's no Sweet Baby Inc style consultants imposing their ideals on games.

There's no investment firms strong arming developers into certain design choices.

There's no government funding to help get these ideology driven games over the line.

There's no weirdo "Community Managers" trying to control narratives around games and no unhinged artists etc attacking potential customers.

No pronouns in the games.

No deliberate choices to have ugly ass women in every single position of power.

No woke lectures.

None of that is happening in gaming guys! It's all these Twitter grifters making it up.

How the fuck did people in this forum of all places on the Internet end up buying into this "it's just grifters" shit?

Games Journalists been saying this forever, not happy that YouTube commentators are making more money and getting more attention, so they call anyone not in journalism a grifter.

But regarding normies saying grifter, it's more recent, some YouTubers and X commentators are riding the media hate bandwagon for money, but they're only pouring fuel on media trash fires that already exist due to shit decisions from Western movie and games studios.

Even before with Mass Effect 3 and game media/development united in attacking anyone who dared criticize its absolute contender for worst of all time ending.

Same attitude people have re: Fox News. Because an entire cottage industry of content creators sprang up around the The Last Jedi and during the Gamergate era that is doing very well for themselves, it's a grift.

Not the other thing that is also doing well for themselves funding games with government grants and ESG loan products, USAID sponsored hit pieces on gamers and the "alt-right", etc. That's just being on the right side of history, and if you make a buck, great!

All that said, I follow a lot of these channels and they are in the content business so they can end up making some real "grifty" shit on a slow news day, but that's the nature of the medium. I don't believe these people are playing Veilguard and Concord on alt accounts. I wish there was more positive things in the space (i.e. promoting good games or things like The Real Game Awards highlighting AA and indie games), and some of them don't seem like the play anything so sometime a real mirror into the shill game. Grifter v Shill I guess lol

So what about this game is shit. Break it down for me

If Oblivion shit out a retarded gay baby, you would have Avowed. It's a perfect example of modern AAA gaming. DEI hires who can't live up to the achievements of their white male predecessors so they deliver a rolled back version of a game you've already played and call it an achievement because it has elements of The Message strewn throughout.

It was started by, and is maintained by, idiots. Stating what is occurring = grifting. Paid for reviews by the access media, on the other hand, is just great!

SHUT UP, QUESTION NOTHING, JUST CONSOOOOOOOOOOOOM THE SHITTY GAMES.

I suppose it's easy to forget that some of the highly regarded names in gaming, such as Obsidian, will have changed a lot of their staff over the years.

Gamers acting like the name on the box means that the game is made by the same people who made their old favourites.

KOTOR 2 was 20 years ago.
Fallout: New Vegas was 14 years ago.
Pillars of Eternity was 10 years ago.

You'll be lucky if anyone talks about Avowed even 3 years from now.

Bioware have flopped big time on all 3 of their most recent games so basically a decade of failure.

Yet people are lining up to go to bat for these developers because they seem to think it's the same guys who made the classics running the show with the new games. It isn't.

People can talk shit about Skyrim all they want but the fact of the matter is that if you know gaming you know about Skyrim and you know it has a massive loyal following even to this day.

People won't be talking about Avowed in 14 years.

That's OK. Not every game needs to be a legendary classic. Few games can live up to that. It seems these days that more and more games are just flopping and being forgotten in record time.

Just seems like modern games are all about the pre-launch hype and then they dissappear like a fart in the wind.

Same as with The Outer Worlds, Obisidian isn't trying to create a simulation or anything like it, I think. They just use the open/semi-open world as a stage for their story.
Devils Advocate: Creating a gigantic fantasy simulation on par with an Elder Scrolls game is near impossible for any current or even 2010s era studio at their hight bar maybe Rockstar and CD Projectk Red, so much so that Elder Scrolls Marrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim have their own fans and detractors arguing to this day which one is the best. And many people think even Bethesda has shown a massive decline with Fallout 4, and especially Fallout 76 and Starfield.

Breath of the Wild for its many achievements absolutely does not allow any of the decision making you can do in an Elder Scrolls title.

Kingdom Come may come close or even exceed in some simulation aspects but it does not have an entire Fantasy component that the Elder Scrolls, even the Fallout series does have.

Bioware arguably worst of the 2000s Era fucking gave up the most on what they did well lol.

Probably the closest, but even Kingdom Come does not really do much with individual item physics.

For all the shit Elder Scrolls games get, there's really nothing else out there quite like them.
