Thread: The Emulation Thread
I use it and I have zero issues in the few games I tried it with so far

It'd be better if you share more info on your issue so that we can help, things like what format is the game you're trying to run, is it a disc, a package file etc, since you're now moving into emulating a system that had more than one way of acquiring games, the emulator is naturally just as complex to use.

It is the disc version of Killzone 2.

I have tried both EU and US, and have tried to update both games. I get the error "rpcs3 the ps3 application has likely crashed you can close it". I really get no further explanation.

This is so anecdotal, but I now have 2 KZ2 discs that do not read properly in my PS3 despite being guaranteed working by sellers. Not sure whats up with that damn game.

And they both work sometimes.

Did you decrypt the .iso file? You'll need something like this:
Then you can boot the extracted folder from the emulator.

Alternatively, a .pkg copy of the game would be a much simpler process, you'd just need to install the .pkg inside the emulator and you'll be good to go.

I tried to download both the eu and us version from myrient, and update both to 1.29.

Maybe the keys are the problem, as I don't really know how to activate the keys.

Want to add an update.

I found Killzone HD in .pkg format, and the .rap with it.

This worked flawlessly. So that is nice.

But how can some people just import their ISOs and it works? I have to install all my games through .pkg? And not even all places has the games as .pkg.

Also I encountered a problem. I am using a Horipad SDL controller which the emulator correctly detects, but as soon as I boot up the game then the SDL controller gets instant disconnected. However, using a Dualshock 4 controller works just fine.

Like I said, playing through the disc formats does work, you just ran through an issue.

Strange, it should automatically just detect whatever controller you connected and be good to go if you didn't fiddle with the input settings.

As someone who tries to understand things about they work or don't, this doesn't help much.

Is it just that some games work as iso, and others has to be .PKG?

It seems to be a common issue. I even tried to delete the entire folder and redo everything, the same thing happens.

Pkg are psn downloadable titles. I don't think Killzone 2 was available in that format. Have you tried loading iso in a virtual dvd-rom like with Daemon Tools?

Yeah but that didn't work either.

Also, it was Killzone HD, and not Killzone 2. Does it mean that if the games are digital versions, then you have to install them into rpcs3? And physical discs can just be isos and be booted?

If the last part is true, then why are there even .iso versions of Killzone HD on the web in the first place?

Killzone HD likely had a disc release. Just googled this:

s-l1200.jpg

So pirate sites you can find both versions. Killzone 2 appears to be disc only. It makes sense - PS3 ran big games worse from a hard drive.

I used RPCS3 once to play Drakengard 3. It was a downloadable version. It installs into emulator's virtual hard drive. Don't know how disc games should work.

I tried getting both the ISO and pkg version of littlebigplanet.

rpcs refuse to detect the ISO file. I can install the .pkg version just fine without any issues.

If I have to use every game as .pkg instead of .iso, wouldnt it one day be a hell to go through my entire PS3 catalogue after a Windows reinstall etc?

Ok this is interesting.

When I launch and play LittleBigPlanet, I can use my hori controller without any issues.

But when I launch Killzone HD, it drops my Hori configuration and disable it.

Why? Save your pkgs somewhere if you afraid to lose them.

It is not so much that I fear of losing them, more, do I need to install them again if I reinstall rpcs3? I mean there is a reason there is an installation process right?

Yes, probably. RPCS3 emulates PS3's operating system and hard drive to run those. Installs and deletes software as would real PS3 do. It's quite genius.

I'd prefer any other emulator where you can just scan a library and play the games.

So far this is the first emulator I have experienced where you have to install the game instead of just loading the rom.

If I reinstall my PC then I can just boot any ps1, ps2, switch, hell any emulator up and run my rom, but with rpcs3 I have to reinstall everything.

I want to fix Killzone HD not detecting my Hori but I cannot seem to find out how to reset the settings besides cache.

Because it is pretty weird that Killzone HD doesnt detect my hori controller, but LBP does.

This is an emulator for a more advanced system so.

How often to you reinstall your PC? Just don't delete emulator and folders where it keeps installed stuff and it should work fine.

Can you write in detail what did you do when trying to run the game through the ISO? Have you decrypted the file if its encrypted? You can either mount the disc file then the emulator should be able to play it, or the more messy version is just extract its contents and point the emulator to thay folder.

The reason why this isn't like the older emulators is because the PS3 is one tough system to develop shit for, it's apparently not that simple to do, as the issue for this feature on github has been open for like 6 years now and nobody came with an implementation yet. It's the same for the new ShadPS4 emulator as well.

The best way is to just mount the .iso file to not have to deal with duplicate game files and wasting space.

If it is a one time thing then it is not the worst. Just a dull process the first time I guess.

I have tried to decrypt the file, I have tried to export the content from the ISO file, I have tried to use alot of decrypters etc to get it to work, but the only time it actually was possible was to boot up was using a .pkg file.

I dont know if you can help me though with this. As said earlier, My hori controller does not work with Killzone HD, but works with any other game like LittleBigPlanet, and I dont know why. Shouldnt the controller work with all games, if it worked with one?

I am almost sure that yesterday, when I finally got the games to work by using the .pkg file, I was able to use my hori controller, but it doesnt work for that game today so I thought it could have something to do with the setup of the game.
I have tried to clear the cache and everything but it does not work. Is there something else I can do to maybe get my hori controller to work with that specific title?

I have a suspision that it has something to do with settings for that specific game, but the only thing I can find is clearing the cache, which I did, but it didnt fix it.

You can try forcing that game to use your Hori pad: right click on the game inside RPCS3 > create custom gamepad configuration. Set it to your pad and hit Apply/Save.

After doing that then my Hori controller doesnt work in LBP either now lol.

This is what it looks like before running the game.

I dont get why my controller work in neither games now. It is certainly because of something in the setup, but I do not know how to fix it now.

lol at this point I'm not really sure what to do.. Is Steam running in the background? maybe its fucking up the inputs, I recall shit like that usually happens in windows.

Yeah I know that can happen but now I have shut down Steam.

It just doesnt make sense that it doesnt work.
Especially that LittleBigPlanet worked straight out the gate until I made a custom configuration then it doesnt work there either.

I do have Playstation 4 controllers lying around so it's not because I can't get it to work, it would just be nice to have one controller for everything you know.

Also, about installing the .pkg files. I can see that when you install a game, then it goes permanently into your rpsc3 folder.

Does that mean that I could just delete the .pkg file afterwards, as the game seem to be inside the rpsc3 folder. I noticed that because I transfered my rpsc3 directory to my other PC and both Killzone and LBP were then installed.

Yes, the emulator's directory is a virtual PS3 filesystem, all your games and saves will be stored there.

You can try removing the custom configuration you created by right clicking the game > Remove > remove custom configuration.

Thanks for clearing that up. So theres really no reason to keep the .pkg files, they dont usually become interrupted or anything?
I don't seem to have that option, only
- remove shaders cache
- remove ppu cache
- remoive spu cache
- remove hdd1 cache
- remove all caches.

I FIXED IT.

I went under settings, under config -> I/O, and 'Keep Pads Connected',. that prevents the emulator from disconnecting the controller.

I know I am selfish but I really hate that especially Android and iPhones are being supported now with emulators.

When discussing emulation on the internet 90% of it atm is about smartphone emulation.

I miss the old days when it was PC that was about emulation, it was easier to get help and info etc.

I have the same frustrations, for me it's not about being selfish, it's about all the children flooding the forums with how to play new Zelda game on fucking iPhone 7 or whatever. The mobile emulation communtiy is absolutely disastrous and several good devs already retired projects because of the toxic and childish behaviour.

Learning to use emulation isn't hard, but it shouldn't get piss easy either, if you aren't willing to sit down and read even a tiny bit to understand how to generally use an emulator, go back to playing cod or whatever.

Emulation is cool tech for the curious, and it should necessarily stay that way to avoid moronic, tech illiterate users.

Without a doubt.

Emulation is something most people know, at least gamers, and corps like Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony knows about it well. But as long as it didn't get huge focus then they went somewhat under the radar, with the exception of Nintendo.

But thanks to these phone asshats our Vimm's Lair got shut down, or at least got alot of great games removed. I know theres alternatives, which I've also used, but Vimm's Lair was just super easy as that site had almost everything.

It is crazy how well PS3 emulation has become. I run Killzone, Killzone 2 and LBP - which are the only games I tried - flawlessly upscaled to 1440p. Sony cries about how hard it is to emulate PS3 games while some hobbyists makes it work on PC lol.

Was playing syphon filter 2 as I want to complete the entire series. Feels way better than the first, mission wise.

But I also wanted to play Jak & Daxter for a long time. But damn it looks blurry, even with all graphics maxed and even with upscaling. Everything looks so blurry.

Looks pretty crispy to me.

Upscaling can't bring hi-res textures into existence. Look for texture packs for that one.

If Sony wanted to, they could have made a deal with RPCS3 guys to have their emulator run PS3 games on PS5.

They don't need to make any deals or even approach the emulator's devs, the code is under GPL2 license, they can take the emulator without permission and run with it, that is if they can swallow their pride and basically admit the community beat them with their own console.

I am not talking about textures. Look at Jak, look at the chests. It seems blurry, or like seeing kinda double when being drunk.

Also, seems like I should avoid doing save states as it seems to actually break the games.

Tried two times now that Jak & Daxter literally broke from being able to manually save so it just keep trying to save infinitely and cannot access the start menu.

I think it's some kind of native post processing effect common in PS3 games. Emulator emulates it too.

It is a PS2 game, but yeah it is some interlacing or something. Really a shame because it keeps it from being super sharp. Duckstation tends to look sharper in some games.

It's from HD collection on PS3, right? They probably added their own gimmicks on top.

No its just the PS2 version running through PCSX2.

I am having some annoying issues...

I am getting stutters, like the game is loading and I get a few stutters here and there that can be game breaking:

It doesn't happen often, and I know that my rig is strong enough to run the emulator.
