What's up figs? King Shitpost here.

I want to address some of the recent drama as it's starting to wear and I don't want us to fall apart just before the finish line. We've already lost Cato (hopefully only temporarily) over trivial bullshit, so let's not lose haris or Bar next. I can see the stress of it starting to take a toll on our glorious mod bods and it doesn't have to be that way. Yes, we are strong personalities, and that's why we got purged by El Shower Goblina. But that's also what makes us interesting and downright hilarious, and we have a real opportunity to build something unique here. We are the raucous dwarves in a tavern that I use in my nerdy analogy. We just need to learn how to settle our disputes without cracking steins over each others' heads and threatening to burn the damn tavern down. The nuclear option helps no one.

In my observation, there are two camps that aren't really seeing the middle ground at the moment:

1. Shitpost kr3w.
2. Growth crew.

Shitpost kr3w wants dpad to be an extension of what we all loved about pre-9/11-2 GAF. The freewheeling, freespeaking, freememeing fun environment with minimal top-down intervention by authority. These guys are the life of the forum; the types that enabled Cunth and MHK to be themselves and rule the roost. We all love shitpost kr3w, warts and all.

Growth crew doesn't necessarily dislike or disagree with shitpost kr3w, but they're looking at the bigger picture and thinking long term. How do we ensure that dpad is sustainable? How do we make it turn a profit so that Mirabilis reaps some well-deserved reward for xir effort? How do we bring in new people so that we're not just recycling our current memes? Growth crew wants to build us into more than just an extension of the Discord. They want to lay the platform for shitpost kr3w to shine.

The two sides need each other. Without shitpost kr3w, growth crew has nothing interesting to nurture. Without growth crew, shitpost kr3w has no new personalities or ideas coming in and stagnates. Trust me, I am 100% part of shitpost kr3w. However, I am also a realist and a utilitarian and see the value of growth crew. We need to work together because at the end of the day, we have a common goal: the success of dpad.

So, that's my diagnosis. Here's my treatment:

Growth crew: Don't nag or shame shitpost kr3w for not living up to your ideals. Recognise that: a) it has a chilling effect and can stifle humour, which is a precious resource, especially in this day and age; and b) we're in early access and all still letting our hair down after finding a comfy new home. Focus on creating content and if some shitposting bothers you, just let it go. It's not worth starting drama over.

Shitpost kr3w: Try to work towards the common goal with growth crew. Don't avoid having fun but do avoid overindulging. Before hitting reply, why not ask yourself whether your new shitpost will help or hinder growth? If it hinders, maybe consider posting it to the Discord instead? Also, this is not an instruction. No one is trying to tread on you. It's just a request to work together to help build this thing because we all benefit from that. Hopefully no one will shame you for not conforming. If they do, send them my way for some Cyberbullying.

Mod bods: Stay mostly hands off. Recognise that direct intervention can have an irreversible chilling effect. When you feel that itch, take a breath. Talk to each other. Don't jump straight in and attempt to enforce cultural change. You're a janitor, not an arbiter.

TL;DR don't be figs

"some shitposting bothers you, just let it go. It's not worth starting drama over."

Pretty much what I do unless someone really fucks up. Don't call out anyone just remove myself and walk on my merry way. I think thats the best way.

Morality isn't homogeneous and I don't expect others to have the same level of morality I do. So im not gonna pretend to be a morality police and preach.

NOT A GOOD LOOK GUYS?

You can't have "let people post what they want with minimal moderation" and "please think of the optics", someone needs to back off. I did less thinking about my posts at Gaf for christs sake.

That's not what I said.

Learn to read, fig.

And the third option is: 3- Belongs to both growth and shitpost. That's me

Its unfair to limit people to just black and white when there're plenty of colours. If you don't like shitposting that much just simply ignore it and move and if you're so against growth, then you can ignore it and stick to what you want.

This isn't a big deal. People needs to learn to ignore what they dislike and move on. Again, ignore and move on don't ruin it for others because you'll be moaning if it was vice versa

I wasn't directing anything at you calm down. I have seen the phrase not a good look here and on the discord so many times it's making me sick.

You're just triggered and not reading then. Triggd fig.

I hear what you're saying but this thread ain't it.

I read your post. I think my post was relevant.

I think the place would be better served having the optics police chill out a bit rather than have people "ask yourself whether your new shitpost will help or hinder growth?" lol

I'm more Team Growth. I've never had a problem with the shitpost crew on GAF and things look fine here. MHK and Cunth were always entertaining. I always look at Gaming and Politics stuff first, then if I have time I scan OT for entertainment news. Then if I have time after that I might read some of the more goofy threads. It only takes a few seconds to scan a forum for topics I may find interesting at the time. If I don't have time to read shitposts I can just scroll past. No need to take online forums so seriously.

Then fuck it. Who cares what they say.

Yes I admit, I too was being cautious on how we might look, but in hindsight, who gives a fuck.

We are all sensible enough to not go around naggerfiggoting.
That should be enough.

I am a shitposter and I'll be damned if I'm going to stop posting shit.

A thoughtful thread from our resident cyber bully. I am probably more in the shitposting category but try not to attack people personally. The best course of action to keep things going is probably just to not attack others and speak up if you are attacked.

We don't need to walk on eggshells all the time but just acting as if we were meeting in real life would be best, talk tough with friends who are okay with that and just talk normally with others. I never understood why people keep up with long and bitter arguments on the internet, arguing doesn't change people's opinion, everyone just gets pissed off.

You should think about the optics before complaining like that.
Is that better?

How many times can one read the same opinion before it becomes monotonous? Clown World is full of clowns. Our leaders are hypocrites. And then the chorus of follow up posts, "Yeah, I agree. But what can you do?" This is not a put down for those who contribute and reply. It's just an observation.

Reading or seeing something different or unusual is a highlight for everyone, I figure. I love being surprised by a post that drips with an individual's personality, or perceived personality anyway.

Like watching a good TV show or reading a good book, it's the characters that make the journey enjoyable. Being humorous on the internet is route at this point, so many tongues in so many cheeks. But an individual who comes and makes something different, that is a rare thing. It should be nurtured and encouraged. Not everything lands, but that is how one grows. Trying and failing is a part of the process.

So, I read this thread as I am drinking my morning coffee, and it makes me think on my own contributions to the forum. I would most likely be considered a casual gamer and it isn't my primary or secondary interest. I rarely post in gaming. I don't care much for modern movies or popular entertainment. I don't follow the news. All I have to contribute is my little drawings and animations. I base all of it on the things I see and read on here. That is all I do. My latest thought was to animate @DudeTwo huffing someone's farts and can't escape because he's a face on a green wall. (Still thinking on who is doing the farting). That's it. I will take me at least two hours to do that, at least two. Then I'll post it and maybe get a few laugh reacts, and judge my work based on those reacts and be pleased or upset at the results. What is the purpose of art if not to have others enjoy it?

I also think about how to make @cryptoadam into a character. Maybe a pair of floating boobs? Is this a valuable way to spend my time? I'm hoping these little things help me to become better at my hobby. I haven't hit a wall yet, so I will continue.

If one's contribution to this forum "Is not a good look" or "Will stifle growth" or whatever, so be it. I happen to think that being cancelled is inevitable by the commies and "progressives". If it takes a few dollars to keep the lights on here, I'll give. Just waiting for the thing to be sorted. If it fails and we are back to discord, that is ok too. It's the people I'm interested in, not the place. I learned how to use discord in order to keep in touch with you lot. If it's something else I need to do, I'll do that also.

Read this or don't. It's just my thoughts on the matter, is all. Thanks for your time.

Look if you can get the forum to pay for itself... not make a profit, just break even... I doubt anyone will care about growth any more...

Last thing we want is Tyler laughing his ass off because we are having the same problems.

Amen to the bolded; I couldn't agree more.

I personally don't care what the "direction" of the forum ends up being. A forum is great for as long as it contains really cool people. Once they leave, it goes to shit almost immediately. I just want to chill, talk shit with, and have real conversations with real people.

I'd be 10x more likely to talk to someone I disagree with and is cool as fuck, than a boring person that agrees with me 100% of the time.

Quoting myself from the other thread:

Guys: My posting was made in context of whether this forum wants to be seen as favorably by the general public or not, something Arc and Dr. Farnsgoth seemed to be concerned about.

I personally have no issue with 100 "retared" threads, I'm all for freedom and having fun. I just pointed out that a big amount of certain "having fun"-threads will create an image for this forum that probably many "politically correct" outsiders will condemn. Basically: If the goal is that D-Pad.Life eventually become a website where industry people, insiders and media people wanna join, then what I wrote applies. If the goal is to just have a fun place for talking games and shitposting and having fun, then whatever goes. Just showing the possible paths, lol.

I'm just one user, so pls don't feel threatened by my opinion :D And again: I'm not against "retarded" threads. Dare me and I'll go full-retard myself, retarder than you guys ever could!!1

My thoughts, as it was somewhat insinuated that I supported one side of things, when it's a bit more nuanced than that.

My take:

I laugh and say 'tards'. Specifically when someone gets as creative as rapping.

The sensible side of me also feels good that you feel comfortable making this type of thread — that means I haven't created a culture of fear, and I am being a direct Evilore opposite. The little things like that tell you a lot.

But... I see what Falcs is saying. I see what you all are saying as well.

I think we could very easily find ourselves in one of two bad situations.

1: Culture goes full shitposter/in-joke; forum never reaches any kind of appeal and disappears over time.

2: Culture tries too hard to reach out to the offended — we create Neogaf 2021, but with nicer mods. No fun allowed.

We want to avoid both of those. We need a balance. Which is really easy to say, and really difficult to put into execution. But that starts with you guys. You should shitpost, otherwise what are we even doing here? But you should also be aware of the situation and what we all agreed we're trying to create. In the last 24, it feels like that balance tipped a bit.

I don't consider the two things at odds. I would be more likely to join a forum that has funny threads in addition to video game news. Prior to you guys livening up neogaf I would only occasionally browse for video game news and sales data I didn't make an account until it became clear that there was an actual community and it was actually funny. Not to mention that it was non-sjw. I don't want to have good optics for someone that's a big sjw. I'll worry about my optics at a job interview not while I'm posting on a forum.

Quoting myself from the other thread:

Let me clarify: none of us except maybe Yoshi care about appeasing faceless PC types. Clearly the words "stifle growth" have triggered some of the don't tread on me types (lol @ Nympho, god damn cheese eating surrender monkey). What I mean is that newbies won't find our in-jokes funny because they won't know the context. It's nothing to do with political correctness. I love that stuff as much as anyone on the discord but when dpad goes public I think it could cause people to bounce off. What I think growth crew wants is to build it up and attract new personalities so that we have new in-jokes and new things for shitpost kr3w to run with. What if that helps us attract the next MHK or Cunth?

100%

I just wish you cunts would stop interpreting this as tone policing "optics". That wasn't the point of the thread.

It is what it is man. I get what you're saying but there are people saying something else if the problem with the Chloe Moretz Grace thread is that it claims to be part 2 then I don't see the problem with dropping the two but if the problem is that we're cyberbullying someone who will never see the thread then I'm not interested in that.

Then I misunderstood your initial posting, mea culpa. It sucks a bit that I got under quite some fire, though, even though I personally don't even care about "optics" :> I'm here because Yoshi is here and as long as this is a place where one can talk about video games, that's all I hoped for. My postings to this topic were 100% intended as help to make it clear: IF that is the goal, then THAT is rather bad. But if "that" isn't even the goal, then everything's fine :)

I will say this much, though: Communities are always better when they have a healthy amount of female members, too, that's why I find the "dick"-thread titles and "primae nocte"-jokes a bit much. That's my personal opinion, though, and it bears no weight on anything, of course. Considering how thirsty Yoshi is, sausage fests can be scary ;P

I don't want to insert myself in a way that suggest anyone is right and wrong — this is a culture issue between you guys, that where if we get involved, everything will become terrible.

I will say that any female member that's gotten as far as coming here, will likely have a thicker skin anyway. Playing games as far as getting into them this much, where you want to come and discuss them, probably means you have a lot of experience with the kind of boys' club/gamer culture, or even enjoy it.

So you can see comments like this

Women don't play video games
And just write Zombie and Brap in your mental notebook, to troll in a post/Discord later.

Do not start this shit up. If you want to start playing identity politics and pushing quotas, leave and don't let the door hit you on the way out.
