I only ever played the first one all the way through way back on PS2, so I'm tempted to check this out. Going to check if the PC ports are any good first.

I only discovered the series in the last few years and its become one of my all time favourites. The launch day discount is really good as well. To be honest its almost worth it for some on the individual worlds alone i.e The Pirates of the Caribbean open world level, or the Toy Story adventure etc. The mini games though the entire series are really fun, I love building my Gummi ship and the Winnie the Pooh games. The music is really old school, were tracks were fun and memorable.

Oh and if anyone else is thinking of picking this up, absolutely play in the order listed. Each none numbered entry has massive plot developments, just as many as the numbered games.

I find it ironic that Kingdom Hearts is releasing on Steam the same day as SMT V/Vengeance is releasing. Two JRPG series at the polar opposites of hope vs despair/cynicism/nilihsm.

That sounds right up my street haha.

Resolution and framerate options only for the first game (I'd imagine the majority of this collection). Presentation looks amazing though. Something about PS2 graphics in general cleaned up, makes them timeless IMO. The art style definitely helps here.

Frame rate options are 30/60/120/Unlocked. I'm obviously getting 4k native 120fps with my 4090. Taking a few screen shots as I go. Let's see if I can keep track of the story as I play through them all.

I would rather more games aim for nice looking PS2/Gamecube era stylized graphics instead of taking 5/6/7 or 10 years to come out, if ever.

Perfect way to celebrate Pride month!

Well call me a mod edit, let's celebrate!

I will say, the naming conventions used within this franchise are absolute nonsense.

Square should be ashamed of themselves.

Have you had chance to start your journey yet? I've been heavily distracted recently, but hoping to pick this replay back up sometime later this week.

I started it on Steam Deck but I've been so busy recently that I've not really given it a fair shake. I think once everything has settled down post-wedding then I'll be able to properly give it the time it deserves.

Barely even started it tbh, just got past the tutorial section.

Excited to see where it goes.

@Hostile_18 So, I've been slowly working my way through KH 1.5 Final Mix. Mixed thoughts so far, love all the reverence for Disney properties and now that I have a fleshed out arsenal of attacks the combat is opening up a bit more. Just finished the first encounter at the Coliseum and heading back to Traverse Town, only about 7 hours of play time so far. The story is still absolute nonsense with no sense of direction or pacing and it's a stark reminder to the convenience of modern gaming that it doesn't really hold your hand at all. It just lets you figure it out by moving through the biomes, I sort of dig it, but it can feel a bit slow going when you've no idea what you're meant to be doing next. Even the journal is lousy for that.

So, we're not off to the best start, but given it's a bank holiday, I think I will see how much I can get done time permitting. Hoping to maybe get through the first game.

I can't say I outwardly hate anything, other than the jumping so I am definitely going to stick with it.

I saw you playing it and each time I do its a reminder I need to get back to it lol. Now I've finished System Shock it's full steam ahead until Ragnorok.

I don't think even the first game is that short BTW, I'm sure my original play through was around the 60 hour mark!

The story is the first game is largely logical, but after that oh boy lol. Have you got to the Gummi ship missions yet? They are really love or hate, but I love it. I just built a block with as many guns on the front as I could possibly add lol.

The levels in the first game are definitely more quaint. But the art style + music makes each one really stand out. I'd recommend just taking your time but big breaks between entries. I'd pretty much recommend that for any franchise tbh.

Oh yeah, the Gummi space ship stuff is so bad I blocked it out of my mind lmao. That shit is PS1 era levels of poor.

HLTB puts Kingdom Hearts Final Mix at around 25 hours, so I can definitely make some good progress if I am not bothering with finding Trinity symbols or Dalmatians!

I definitely rate the music and the arenas, it's sort of warming to see all these Disney properties mashed in with a bunch of Final Fantasy nonsense.

KH 2 was definitely a step up from the first game from what I recall. The combat was more fun. I will say, to get the most out of combat in KH 1 you probably need to do all the Coliseum battles. That's where the real challenging fights were.

The only way to appreciate combat systems in a lot of Square games is to look at the optional stuff, where you have to really master the combat. Final Fantasy XIII also threw in a cool combat ranking system for every battle.

As for the story being nonsense, I find this to be a common problem with a lot of "crossover" stories, and I'm not just referring to video games. When you have to come up with a story that mixes together different universes that were never meant to be mixed together, with a large number of different characters who all need to be serviced by the story in some way, you usually end up with something that is just a mess.

I mean its a fun mess story wise. The later entries don't have much Final Fantasy at all and its still bat shit insane, but because its so complex it's hard to say if the story was laid out on a board somewhere there would have any more inconsistencies than any other complex franchise.

I think what helps is you can take lots of simpler pleasures from the combat, the mini games, visiting the different Disney worlds etc. Can't wait to get stuck back into this at the weekend!

@Amorous Biscuit How would you rate the worlds you've visited so far?

I'm doing them in a different order this time. So visited Hercules and the coliseum first, then onto the Jungle book world.

Tarzan my goat, I love what I've seen of the Coliseum so far. James Woods is always great at hamming it up. The guy playing Phil did a great job impersonating Danny DeVito!

Agrabah was decent too, now that I've got some abilities combat is a lot more active and engaging.

That's really good to hear! Now all I need to do is get you addicted to getting high scores in the Gummi missions lol. Once you build your ship with more and more guns, it's so satisfying going back to old runs and destroying absolutely everything.

I could never love them!

For all my bluster about playing loads over the bank holiday I didn't manage to get on once and play. Dismal effort from me.
