I'm mowing my garden. So I decide to listen to some music I think let's see what's going on in the top forty.
Seriously wtf is up with music.
Listen to the lyrics

I swear it's like a lot of the newer music is just the lyrics of. I might as well give up and cry in my pillow fort.

More depressing than radiohead

Compared to this

I'm sorry but scatman John had a message
Never forget cotton eye Joe.

The question was never answered where did he go?

Deep shit indeed

There have always been shitty ballads on the charts.

You should be listening to Dua.

I mean, certain genres were always super cringe, I made a thread about the worst simp songs and many older ones are painfully cringe.

Im going to write a song about how you already made the thread and how I hope your thread is better than mine and how I'm glad you told me about your thread. Expect greatness

Let's make it a duet and show everyone our feelings.

On TikTok.

I really think a good barometer of music quality is to go off the Vinyl charts, you have to atleast give a shit to go out and buy vinyl

EDIT - I went to check the chart after this post and accept the riddicule coming my way

Scatman John is the GOAT!

Have a talented DJ throw a long list of them into a blender and I can still be a sucker for that stuff:

Pop music has always been like that. You have to venture out to find the good stuff but that's easier than ever today.

Don't get me wrong I love music like grunge, rock, metal and jazz as well as the prodigy. Beatles etc. I just wanted to hear who the public were listening to. It just feels like music has no fight or passion to it.

Meatloaf and Brian Adam's wrote some banger ballards.
Music now just sounds like "help I'm depressed and anxious. I'm throwing in the towel"

There used to be a few steps between "pop" music and just normie ear aether.

Now it's a straight pipeline from the Pro Tools mixdown to Walgreen's speakers. It's just safe noise.

I think it started after Nirvana with groups like No Doubt and Bush — and, even better for the industry when they figured out how to give boy bands decades long careers — completely controlled, well-managed "artists" plopping out music like it's time to make the donuts, on a schedule, while the labels making money off of the licensing and publishing racket and keeping the assembly line moving with fresh crops of young dupes who want to be famous.

EDIT: Also worth noting, pop music is for old people now. If young people aren't into music, their radio is TikTok, which has it's own really odd and interesting structure for licensing and what they push out — completely hijacked the old radio payola model.

There's actually really good new pop music, but for the effort you need to put in to discovered it, you might as well go deeper into the underground.

For sure! It's interesting the voice of this generation is completely absent of the glamour and fantasy of the 70s and 80s…

One the one hand, it's neat to see a generation of artists completely post-bullshit, as all the boomer lies and fantasies dissolve. On the other, there's no aspiration, no transcendence. Music should at least tickle the spirit, if not stir it. Modern pop feels like a bored and horny Instagram doomscroll at 2AM.

This. Has there ever been a time in the last say 50 years that the "top 40" was remotely decent? I'm thinking no.

What?
80ies (especially early to mid) had amazing stuff in the charts..

Googled top 10 of 1983 in Germany and got this

1. "Moonlight Shadow" – Mike Oldfield
A song about a murder.

2. "Flashdance…What A Feeling" – Irene Cara
about dancing

3. "Billie Jean" – Michael Jackson
quite edgy as well

4. "Juliet" – Robin Gibb

5. "99 Luftballons" – Nena

a song about nuclear war

6. "Major Tom (Völlig Losgelöst)" – Peter Schilling
about flying to space

7. "Africa (Voodoo Master)" – Rose Laurens
See title

8. "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)" – Eurythmics
love song, but also quite edgy

9. "Blue Monday" – New Order
about a toxic relationship

10. "Bruttosozialprodukt" – Geier Sturzflug
German nonsense song about the German gross national product

Even pop music used to be so much deeper...

There is a lot of variation and I bet the message of the songs says something.

Lol that list is trash. But still vastly better than modern pop. Sad.
