I've done this before... and honestly didn't really regret it all that much. I'd rather walk my dog than play an old Nintendo cartridge ever again.

I currently own so many physical games between PS1, PS2, Xbox, 360, XB1, XBX, PS4, PS5, Switch... and I'm not really sure why. I always "want to" play them "some day"... but I won't. I know I won't. It's stupid to own them. Even if I do play them... it's for like an hour or two... then I get burned out and do something else. Maybe it's just approaching my mid 30s.

Like do i really need to pretend like I'm going to have people over my house to play Marvel vs Capcom 2 on both Xbox and PS2?! Even if - why do I care? I'd rather have the $200 or whatever.

Frankly, all games kinda suck ass compared to Tekken (yeah, I said it) - and I have more than enough competent digital titles, and emulation devices that... they're absolutely superfluous.

I want money. I want to leverage myself into a better position in life. I've been spending more time working out and taking overtime at work than I have playing games. I'm a bit of a workaholic tbh. Never take days off. My boss always warns me I'm going to burn out... my last boss did the same. It's been years.

I want to read more books, go to the gym, and game less. Gaming just doesn't bring me the joy it used to, and having shelves full of games I never touch doesn't bring me much joy at all. I pretty much own every game I could want to own... and I'm not a happy person.

"Old game guy" isn't who I want to be in life. I earnestly hate other nerds. People think I'm kidding when I say that, but I'm not.

It's time to purge. Would love to take that money and invest it in something more useful, or fix up my house, etc... y'know - be an adult. I'll still have games at my disposal - I mean fuck, there's 873 of them in my Steam library alone. That's more than I'll ever play realistically. Like why do I own two computers? Am I retarded?

So yeah...

I think I'm about to do it. Doesn't make much sense not to. Plus, I enjoy running an ebay store, and homebrewing devices or modding them more than I do actually playing the games these days.

Sorry if I'm rambling. I think I'm more embarrassed to own as many games as I do or having them be as big of a part of my life as they seem to be. Because really... they're not.

I still hold on to a couple dozen physical games that I think are too good to let got.

And few other gems.

But I have a decent home office where I have them all on display.

Some of my biggest regrets were things I traded into GameStop....like Metroid Prime and Mass Effect 2.

Both are easily playable on modern hardware and fairly common in the wild for repurchase

Why would these be regrets?

It does seem awfully redundant when i have two decent PCs in the house, a Steam Deck, one of those Anbernic things etc

I was purchasing all these to fill a void. Just like i did when i was younger and collecting everything retro I could get my hands on

Im not planning to ditch any hardware but idk. I think im just sorta over it and want to move onto something else. Not even as a hobby- just general life improvements.

Sell your games but keep the hardware and buy flash carts/ode's. Save so much space and still have the authentic experience

I don't keep any copies of the games I buy now. Buy the game, finish it and then trade or sell on marketplace. Waste of space and money

You will regret it. Look at other ways to increase your income. And stop doing middle class dumb people stuff like car payments.

The amount of games in my closet could pay off my mortgage and I still don't sell any of it. Why? I rather focus on my investment skills or earning more income because one day im going to have a lot of free time to enjoy my collection.

If there's zero emotional attachment to any of the games you wish to be rid of then go for it, the only physical media I still have is 3 Gamecube games, the money will serve you better than a dusty old SNES cart.

GameStop always have great trade-in deals here as well. It was double trade-in value towards ff7 rebirth. Spiderman 2 was 35$ x 2 so basically got ff7 rebirth for free

I used to love the idea of owning a gaming room full of all the consoles from every generation and all that but some of them stopped working, there were a lot of cables, etc etc. As soon as I got a good pc I thought "I can play every generation possible with improvements and no clutter" so I sold a lot of shit and now I'm happier. Emulators rule.

Its that, plus i just dont have the time to play even half of what i own, plus... idk i dont want my life to revolve around gaming as much as it does

After collecting for Saturn and Gamecube this shit is too expensive. Now I just buy flash carts instead and have access to the whole library at my fingertips. Nothing wrong with selling your games if you're not feeling it.

Good question. IDK why not. I have done that with old Dark Horse Star Wars comics. I do still need to rebuy some of the games I worked on. When I was in QA I would sell them off cuz I needed cash. But these days I would love to have those clean unopened copies of my career to display. Ill settle for used copies with decent cases these days.

This is a big tangent but god I hate this shit. The way we've normalized the idea of buying a car we can't afford, with interest, on a depreciating asset, is stupid as fuck. "omg man everyone has a car payment, it's totally normal to lose hundreds of dollars per month of your income to have the latest box on wheels!!"

You can't blame people for just picking up on what they see around them their whole lives, but more people need to just save up 6 grand and buy a $6000 car and drive it until it dies.

If you keep it, you'll always beat yourself up for never using it.

On the other hand, if you get rid of it, you'll probably beat yourself up for getting it rid of it when you have the urge to check out an old console or game someday.

There's really no winning.

Maybe shrink the collection down to the precious few? It's funny how I'm sort of the opposite, I sold my small collection years ago and regret it now. I wish I still had the PS3 and my discs, the N64 too wherever the fuck it went etc.

Emulation is definitely the way to go, if you do go with selling everything but what's dear to you and maybe put those on display, then stick to emulating on the Deck, you'll be good I reckon.

Getting into reading and shit is really cool! Do consider branching out to other hobbies, but you don't need to drop gaming for good, I mean, if you really don't feel like it anymore that's fair, but I think you can definitely find the balance without pulling the plug.
 
Don't do it teezzy-san, take pride in that collection

I'm a minimalist myself when it comes to room setup and decor. But every time I sold off a game I regretted it. One day, you might out of no where see Ice Spice at the local gathering of the juggalos and have a kid with her. And in that case, you will need some good retro games
 
@teezzy everything you say makes perfect sense to me. Collecting like that is just about holding on to the memories you enjoyed in the past more than anything else IMO (I like Locke use to be the same).

The fact is you will be able to play every game you ever want to still, either as it was or better with increased resolution and frame rate. Same with movies if you go that route, once the initial cost of hardware is paid for. All that money you pay for physical release you don't need to can spend on your quality of life. Plus all the space saving. In recent years I've become very minimalistic. I don't have a lot but what I do have is good/expensive.

Are you really going to be bothered you don't have a plastic box with cover art ultimately.

If you ever plan on having kids, the physical collection will make more sense. Just like our parents and grandparents had old cameras, old photo albums, old books, might as well retain some of the old videogames you enjoy.

If your library is bloated with a bunch of FOMO reddit Top 25 List stuff that you bought to play someday later, well yeah go ahead and trim the fat and sell some stuff off.
