Thread: Do you collect 4k UHDs? I'd like to discuss the current state of the medium in 2024
Nah. Used to have a small collection but gave it away. Never watched em.

Does make me nostalgic though remembering how big DVDs were in retail. HMV would have a huge section and you could always find cool deals like buy 2 get 1 free etc.... it was fun times to go to the mall or box store and look through the isles of DVDs. Lots of my DVDs i just watched for the commentary.

It kind of sucks for people today they wont be able to excperience that or renting a DVD from a video store.

I miss Columbia House of all things. Was really cheap even for Blu-rays.

The only problem with uhd is that the discs are said to last about 50 years, iirc. That's good but ideally one would have them forever.

New storage tech for backups is key to have indefinitely lasting lossless collections

Hopefully cerabyte's tech is the real deal.

Durabis coating was meant for 100 years. Rewritable media is what lasts up to 50 years.

What's going to make it degrade after 50 years? I have 40+ year old NES cartridges that still work great. Maybe those were build to last, and they don't make stuff like they used to.

Disc rot? I lost some SEGA CD games back in the day as a result of rot

there is disc rot, and plastic begins degrading after several decades. Maybe there won't be issues, but remember blurays spin at very high speed, if the integrity of the plastic decays the disc may break upon spin.

I love getting films on Blu Ray (4k or not). If its a film I love and it has a solid BR release, it usually ends up in my collection. I also buy a lot Japanese/Chinese/Korean films on BR for proper subtitles.

If I could afford it and had the space, I would have hundreds of BRs.

Guy makes a lot of good points.

I definitely think diminishing returns and DVD/Blu Ray being good enough for most are hitting 4K Blu Rays as hard as streaming in many ways.

Honestly, as much as I love practical effects, a lot of older movies kind of suffer with too much visible details making matt paintings, model work and live actors against a screen far more noticeable than they were originally intended to be. Same for older CGI, especially on TV shows.

My local Best Buy has a decent selection, but it's often Amazon or bust for 4K Blu-rays, sadly.

Walmart has a better selection than Target so no big loss for Physical.

Honestly, i buy all mine online. Mostly Amazon or Ebay

Its just interesting because I didnt realize the situation was so dire for UHD as a medium. I knew streaming was more popular, but didn't realize physical discs had become a niche

If you follow the new releases or catalog titles which have been dropping, youd think the format was having a renaissance almost

I can't say I ever got a disc at target. They never had competitive prices in my area.

Crimson Peak and The Crow

Im so hyped 🤪 😎 😆

I'll be getting the crow for sure. Recently picked up the Halo 4k steel book. I know people hate the show but I like it. Shrugs.

I grabbed the newest TMNT steel book... Haven't watched it yet. Because I have a problem.

I'm one of the few proponents of the Chloe Grace Moretz Carrie remake. And i never saw the Aubrey Plaza Chucky movie but it seems like a no brainer

When you get Child Play and Aliens let me know how good the transfer is over the Blu. I will pick them up on sale if they're good transfers

I dont have the blurays of either but i couldn't see them looking bad

A little of both. It doesn't have to be disc vs streaming. Rip the disc. Remux a UHD disc if you like at 60gb, but a good 1080p encode in x265 is between 4-10gb and is still far better than streaming.

I have 120 TV shows and 1000 movies in blu ray quality on my server. I used to be massive on physical too, but times have changed.
