Thread: Jim Ryan is quitting
Yeah I don't know anybody who sold their consoles and switched to PC because some Sony games made it there.

If Sony continues down this route of releasing stuff on PC a year or so later, I certainly am less likely to buy a PS6. I certainly hope they *do* continue this path, of course.

Apparently the interim is really high on mobile games...

You know Japan is all about mobile games right? Console market there is pretty bad.

Japan makes Street Fighter and Tekken. To me, that's a win.

I don't and I'm exclusively a PC gamer. Selfishness would dictate that I should want access to everything on a platform I already own, but that's part of a larger, overarching problem: funneling everything down to a single, digital access point. The death of consoles. GPUs will meet the same fate given the way Intel, AMD and Nvidia are currently talking.

Gaming's following in Hollywood's footsteps, it will meet the same fate.

Yeah well sadly consoles are pretty much in a dying state over there. Completely different lifestyle change, never thought I'd see that

It's true, but when I say "be a Japanese company" it's not "cater to Japanese people tastes in terms of what platforms they want to play" - instead "cater to the people worldwide who enjoy Japanese games made for consoles". There are plenty of fans of Japanese console games worldwide to warrant full releases outside of Japan. Capiche?

Instead, they double down on making western inspired crap.

Yeah, I know what you mean. If I could go back to the days when consoles and PCs felt totally separate, I probably would even if that means some level of inconvenience. Unfortunately, I feel like those days haven't been around since the PS2/GameCube/Dreamcast/Xbox generation.

Right, but it's not 100 games on PS5 and 100 on PC. Sales have been dropping with each release and novelty wears off.

So let's say it's 1000 on PS5 and 100 on PC, and the monetary equivalent of 70 sales once the financial split is taken into account.

Now let's say just 1% of PC sales equates to someone not buying a PS5 because, like me, they don't see the need to buy one.

So they don't get that persons purchase of a PS5, the full revenue of the game, likely PS+ subscription, or a cut of the purchases made on the PS5 that person will make to help justify the purchase cost, which includes additional transactions and subscriptions that we know make up the bulk of platforms revenue streams.

That one average person alone, that didn't buy a console because of the PC will of course not be enough to offset the other 100 sales, but it absolutely would have been worth over a dozen PC sales quite easily were that PS5 purchase have been made instead. If a whale, quite possible several dozen's worth.

Now if as time goes on that 1% rises to 5%, then that's almost certainly the 70 extra sales worth of revenue wiped out entirely. If it gets to 10%, then they're actively making a loss.

Now sure, that's very much a rough estimate and a lot of speculation, but it paints the picture for why giving your customers a reason to not buy your product is placing short term profits over the long term health of your business, something only exacerbated by the drop in quality and output such an approach is already causing with their games.

There are 3 players in the console market currently. 2 have gone multiplatform, while 1 has not.

The one that has not is currently doing the best, better than they ever have before infact, in units sold, market share and revenue. The one that has dipped their toe into multiplatform releases has seen their 1st party games and reputation tank, while software unit sales shrink. The other that has been doing it the longest has lost market share 2 generations in a row and is having internal discussions about leaving gaming entirely.

Argue that the extra money they get makes it financially viable on paper all you like, but it sure as hell doesn't seem to be helping the overall health of either Playstation or Xbox from a holistic standpoint.

I agree with some pts here but I'm just not seeing that level of cannibalization that suggest that porting to PC is not profitable. PS5 is still one of the more successful devices on console market with a wider array of gaming. Maybe it does cannibalize some sales from PS+ but I think again its just handful of titles......not significant enough to materially impact its core services.

Link to the source of that image?

I assume given the massive (E) next to the 2022 bar that that's Expected or Estimated, since it would be weird to see that big of a jump given the relatively soft reception we know from multiple other sources Playstation games have been getting on PC as time goes on, including internal documents in the ABK acquisition hearings.

Ratchet and Clank in particular was a complete wet fart, and with future releases including games that were sales disappointments on the PS5, such as HFW and TLoU2, I can't see that 'exponential' growth materialising again this financial year, even if lasts years is the actual number and not an unmet estimate.

Looks too English to be a Londoner.

In case you didnt know this Andy House and Shawn Layden are the reason there were such amazing gen 8 games from WWS. They were GREAT to work under. They knew quality games.
I miss House, Layden, Yosp and that guy with the glasses whose name escapes me at the moment. (edit: meant Adam Boyes)

Those were the golden years for me on PS.

I miss quirky big hearted Sony.

Ps5 this gen has released 7 Ps5 only games so far this gen

keep in mind there are some coming out this year ..but when you compare this to the ps2/ps3 games (in the 100s)

you can see the amount drop off around the same time the ps4 was released and has continually gone down

Thats what Jim Ryan has left us all with...

PS1 = GOAT
PS2 = Excellent
PS3 = Worthless
PS4 = Great
PS5 = Gay Fish

I'm mostly glad the PlayStation brand has done what it has done and has given what it has given but the last seven or so years could have been better. They let the libtard woke bigot scumbags infiltrate the gaming sector and they were the main culprits among the big three publishers, Xbox being pretty guilty of that as well. I won't blame Jim entirely, but still... Happened on his watch. Sayonara, Jimbo-san
