Octopath started the HD-2D movement, but what little was shown of Dragon Quest III Remake looked amazing.

As things stand now, Octopath Traveler, Live A Live Remake, Octopath Traveler 2, and Star Ocean 2: The Second Story 2 will all have released before Dragon Quest III-HD2D. Add Tactics Ogre Reborn and Super Mario RPG Remake as remasters of extremely notable classic games to that list also.

What the heck happened to Dragon Quest III HD-2D?

There has been next to zero word since its first and only reveal back in 2021, two years ago. Dragon Quest Treasure released last year, with Dragon Quest Adventure of Dai, and Dragon Quest Monsters The Dark Prince later this year. Still zero word on III Remake and XII. No word either on an offline version of X being released in the West either (just remake it as a offline single player game already.)

The creator of Dragon Quest teased more news towards the end of 2022. It is now August.

I think with Infinity Strash: Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai releasing September 28 (about a week after the Tokyo Game Show), we might not see Dragon Quest III HD-2D remake shown again until next year, along with Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate. My guess is when Square Enix initially revealed the two games, they wanted to showcase something special for the series' 35th anniversary even if the remake and newest mainline entry were in reality far from release.

I have never played a Dragon Quest game, all because they never release in the US back when I started console RPGs on the SNES. I only dabble a few games on GB Advance and 3DS. But this looks interesting since I really liked Octopath.

Don't forget there's a DQ Monsters game releasing this year too (I think).

My guess is 3 HD2D in 2024 and 12 in either late 2024 or early 2025.

Thinking about all these spin-offs made me think of what it'd be like if they put out a new trailer for a Dragon Quest game. It starts with a simple retro-style text box. Then you see a "III" and we're all like, "THIS IS IT! FINALLY!"... and then it cuts to gameplay of Dragon Quest Heroes III.

I'm joking of course but watch it become reality.

That's when people start speculating its vaporware.

Also of note is the release schedule. This year is Dai and DQM Psaro's Big Adventure or whatever. Next year, maybe DQ10 offline and DQ3 remake later in the year? SE knows that sadly, there isn't a huge market for DQ outside Japan so they are being careful with releases and likely don't want to oversaturate or cannibalize their own stuff.

Trust me, DQ3 is my favourite game ever, so I'm as eager to play this as anyone here... They'll release it when the time is right for it.
