I remember first seeing an ultrawide monitor at my local MicroCenter and becoming enamored with it. It was a 21:9 and their demo had either Call of Duty or Battlefield for people to walk up and try out. My friend I was with dismissed it as a cheap gimmick, but something really clicked with me about this new sense of immersion as the game wrapped around my head, and I'd wished so badly I could afford to take one home with me. At the time, it was well out of my budget.

Years later, I was in a much better financial position and baited by the glowing reviews of Mr. Linus Tech Tips himself

While I was hesitant initially to drop as much as I did on a monitor, MicroCenter eventually offered it for a price which I couldn't refuse. After a year or so of owning it, I'd like to profess my love of my Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 monitor, and maybe see if anyone else is living the 32:9 or 21:9 high life here. I've had it for about a year or so now, and it's always a pickle when deciding between playing a game on this or my 77" LG C2 via my Series X. They're two of the best displays on the market and I feel absolutely blessed to own both.

Me experiencing a 5120x1440 resolution...

Seriously, you get hooked on it - like a drug. Maybe even moreso than 60+ FPS w/ G-SYNC or going higher than 1080p for the first time. It really opens up a whole new world of gaming.

With a lot of these games you'll see that the devs will have retained a more standard aspect ratio for cutscenes and the game fully reverts back to super ultrawide for the gameplay. This is usually handled relatively smoothly.

With that said, not every game natively supports such wild aspect resolutions, even modern ones (I'm looking at you Elden Ring) - which is changing, but some oldies will definitely surprise you.

For instance, I love that Star Wars: Empire at War from 2006 supports this resolution natively. That blew me away lol. Best surprise ever

For the games which don't, there's mods and workarounds with mixed success. I'm still learning how to get Skyrim to work without any UI issues. I'm not a big modding guy so it's gonna take me a second to get everything just right.

Seems like a lot of people use this Flawless Widescreen software which I've only just installed today and need to fiddle around with more

So yeah, I think it's one of the absolute neatest options of PC gaming which doesn't seem to be as widely adopted as it should be, but I adore the cult-like following these monitors have and enjoy being part of that scene. For me, it absolutely amps up the immersion and you begin to adore the additional screen real estate of not just a giant monitor, but one which allows you to see more of the game at once. That's never a bad thing.

Anyone else love ultrawide monitors?

I'm a dual monitor man myself, I like multitasking and find it easier to do that split across two rather than one ultrawide. Respect to my ultrawide brethren though, don't you get sick of craning your neck to see the whole screen? :p

I got into the ultra wide crew late last year. I have to say...I like it but it's not a must have I think.

Playing Doom Eternal I felt like I could see a bit more of my surroundings, like fucking duh, but idk that I really "noticed" during game play. However that game requires you're attention far more than most.

FH5, I think here it just adds to the ambience. Being able to have a third person view and still have a lot of the screen not be the car was neat.

Those are the only games I've really our a lot of time into with the ultra wide so far. I'm gonna be diving into some stuff here soon now that I finished FF16.

I think my "issue" is that I have a 34, inch ultra wide and I don't sit too far away. I have tried moving back a bit and it does help but it seems far more difficult to find that sweet spot with the ultra wide.

No not at all, you just use your peripherals. It's super effective.

With Windows 11 you can snap windows pretty quickly to different portions of the monitor for production/web browsing, and it feels very much like having dual 27" monitors (my old set up) in that sense

The gaming is where it sings though. I love the stupid thing lol.

I've been using 21:9 for a while. I don't want to go back to 16:9. Sure. Some games have issues. But the games that work and movies look amazing. Not to mention the workspace.

I have quite an old LG model at this point, with Freesync support only between 40 Hz and 75 Hz, although I manually extended the range to 30-75.

I have a 34" UltraWidescreen Acer Predator and I love it. But anything more wide than this is a bit too much for me. I think this one hits the sweet spot.
Second monitor is a 27" Dell UltraSharp, positioned to the right (with the Acer being in front of me).

I love the idea of an ultrawide and even spent a bit of time considering the ups and downs of the Samsung Odyssey G5 as it's down from £449 (RRP) to £360. I wouldn't mind 3440x1440 165hz.

However I'm not sure what I would be able to run with my aged rig and truth be told I prefer to comfy couch it these days so a TV upgrade would be money better spent. Then if I did get a TV upgrade I could force a letterboxed 21:9 within the 4k display and have TV 21:9. Especially if it was OLED, although I'd probably go LCD.

Can I turn the ultrawide sideways, in portrait mode?

I like to have my friends list in a list view, descending.

Got myself a 29incher. LG. Not some crazy gaming one its for work. But ya all about the ultra wide now. Way better than normal monitor. Only problem is i wish i went bigger. Moar space would be even better.

But look if you are going to get a monitor you gotta consider an ultrawide one. Im on team wide.
