Thread: Aloy is gay now, and that's a good thing!
There are gay people in every damn thing now.... So this makes sense.
Side note. I live in a town of 12k in Canada and I know a lot of gay people. I even have a post op trans neighbor. Maybe you need to get out more.

On a more serious note, I watched Orville last week, off course Charlie (the pretty new girl) was gay.
I watched Star Trek Picard. Seven of Nine is gay now, although she had a fling with Chakotay back in the day.
I watched ST: Lower Decks, and off course the main character is gay.
Several Marvel movies I watched lately have gay characters in them.

It's like this is everywhere now.

And I barely know any gays as well, and one trans person. Who is in a mental clinic right now, btw.

I live in a city of 1,7 million people.
Sorry, but this shit is so overblown it's not even funny anymore.

Add/edit: Forgot about the gay romance in Willow. I didn't watch Strange World or Lightyear, but both have gays in prominent roles in them as well it seems..

Well the real question is why does it matter. If Chakotay can get over it. Why can't you?

People being gay doesn't matter. The enormously overblown and intentional presence of gay/trans/etc in all forms of media matters. Don't be daft.

Very weird line of thought there. Just for shits where do you live?

No.

Moving the goalposts now, aren't we?
Of what to what? This is just a thing people say when they don't have an argument.

No.
Overblown? Prove it....
Sounds like you already cut off your dick....pussy

Maybe you just live in the gayest part of Canada.

Of what to what?

You said the argument of gays being overrepresented is bullshit.
I showed how much representation there is in media.

You switched over to "why does it bother you, anyway".

=> moving the goalposts.

This is just a thing people say when they don't have an argument.

Neat little rhetorical phrase. But completely dumb in this case.
See above.

I live in a much smaller town and there's even a fake cheese vegan lesbian owned shop so there. To say I'm against all promotion of abnormality. I would vote to ban everything pride like in Russia.

Haha all that proves is Americans are fucking dumb. 140% of the population is non white and 100% lives in New York Texas and California. Maybe you guys just need to learn math?

Please continue to ignore the part that says LGBTQ makes up less than 5% of the population while people somehow estimate them to be anywhere from 21 to 33 percent, as it is devastating to your argument.

You showed one character on 4 different shows. How the fuck does that prove over representation? Again maybe the problem is you find 1 character to be over representation?

Something tells me that shop won't be there for too long.

I'd call myself a very mainstream viewer of streaming content, and every fucking shit I watched in the last year has gay people in them in prominent roles.

How is that not weird if I don't know any gay people in real live.

Something tells me that shop won't be there for too long.

Skintin is their only customer, and you know, he is terminally ill.

1+3+4=5 now eh. I think the only thing your comment did was prove my argument of you guys need to learn math. Maybe stop worrying so much about the few gay characters till you can at least add a few single digit numbers together.

Thats not gay. No one can resist sexy Asians.

Yeah, I see nothing wrong here.

I wanna see her Ginger Binger on some Eastern Cuisine.

I find very few characters to be gay. Probably less than 10%. Not sure how everything is gay.
Side note. I've never considered a character's sexual orientation in my enjoyment of playing a game. Like who the fuck cares?

Kratos could be giving and receiving sausage daily and I'd still think he's a bad mfer.

Exactly, I'm so not interested in soap opera, relationship drama in my games. I hated all the family drama in UC4 and that annoying kid in God of War, all the emphasis on relationship and romance drama in Mass Effect etc. Really would prefer if games skipped this shit.

I only ever enjoyed romance options in older Bioware titles (pre-Mass Effect) like Baldur's Gate. That shit was awesome because you could romance someone that another party member doesn't like and they'd just shit talk each other constantly. Was hilarious. If they got pissed enough they'd just dip and never return.

yup, why games think we need the drama to care about the game is beyond me. If the game is fun, just drop me into the action behind a gun or holding a sword. I've never stopped a fun game to wonder "y'know I just can't go on, the lack of motivations for the videogame character is really bothering me"

I think it's telling that most of the "story focused" games still have very mediocre (if not awful) writing, and those are the games trying to sell you on the story.

No, there's not very many gay people in real stuff. There are a few. How do you possibly get out more than I do? I've lived everywhere from both ends of the state of Washington to one of the more high tech cities in existence. I'm outdoors every weekend, travel for contests and events, and talk to a lot of different organizations weekly. It's just a fact that there really aren't so many queer people that they need to be in every piece of creative thing in existence. Who the fuck cares, you asked? Well I do and so do a lot of folks who don't need or want gay people in every piece of creative work. Many of us turn the channel or skip content that is there solely to ram gay people into our brains and down our throats. That's a fact supported by Amazon and Netflix's findings.

I'll say it again for ya: normal people don't want to see homosexuality in entertainment. Fact.

Another fact: normal people really don't want gay characters in every children's show and movie. It's fine if there are a couple of creative works out there with the gay characters and such. I thought it was just spiffy when Netflix had a whole section of nothing but lesbian movies and content. I thought that was the ideal place for it. Know what's not the ideal place for a huge banner of lesbians kissing? The front fucking page of Netflix where it's the first damn thing you see upon entering the app. It's pretty dead simple, really.

I see you are still unable to address the actual topic being discussed and are choosing to instead deflect via personal insults. This is the first and only rule of engagement for liberals, leftists, communists, and other mentally unwells when it comes to debate. I am not surprised.

Normal people don't fucking care. 2 girls kissing omg think of the children. Don't like it? Don't watch it. Doesn't seem hard to me.

I did. You ignored it and brought a graph showing how dumb Americans are and then showed you're American by doing shit math. You show me the study they proves American media is made up of over 8% LGBT people and characters and we can talk. Until then you have not provided an actual argument.
Is it me?
Yes when context is needed I do find people have trouble following a long. Read it again a few times and I'm confident it will make sense.

The common perception is that LGBTetc makes up a much larger percentage of the general population than they actually do.

People often base their perception of reality on the media they consume.

This shouldn't be rocket science. Have you eaten your breakfast today?

Normal people don't fucking care.
They do.

That's why a lot of that shit is slowly getting canceled.
Because less and less people are willing to watch this stuff getting crammed into each and every piece of television and now gaming as well.

Look at Disney crumbling.

The market will sort this out.

Didn't you know, now it's not about the facts anymore, but "why do you even care?"

The thread seems to be getting a little heated. However, I think the poll that Expand posted is on point.

Percentage-wise the entirety of LGBTQ+ as whole equates to roughly 1 in every 33 people. Which aligns with similar polls in the UK. I think years ago there was some 1in 10 figure being bandied around which a lot of people bought into, but has long since been debunked. Working in creative I'd say the percentage feels a little bit higher, in terms of representation but I think that comes with the territory.

I don't think anyone is objecting to representation, but more marvelling at how over-represented it is becoming in media. From what I understand the Aloy thing is an optional choice versus a given? So it's perhaps not that egregious, but a certain ennui is beginning to creep in. The other day I was watching Ted Lasso season 3 and they inexplicably went the bisexual route with a female character who up until that point had been quite clearly straight and it was a bit really? Especially given they'd already put emphasis on another character being gay (albeit closeted) as a storyline. Honestly, the gay character things feel like a creatively bankrupt move, where the writers mistake someone's sexuality for their personality when in reality it's merely a facet of it, and being a lesbian feels like a perfect fit for strong independent female in their eyes.

I don't care if they add gay characters. When they add one to everything it feels more forced like they are doing it to check off a box. In most shows or games you don't even need to know what the characters sexuality is because it doesn't tie into the story at all, so announcing gay or trans characters can be a bit awkward.
