Silent Hill 2 Remake Details Leaked

An anonymous source has reached out to WhatIfGaming and has shared all the details from today's upcoming Silent Hill announcement. They have shown us all the proof we need and can indeed confirm that the details shared are all the genuine article. Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming Silent Hill 2 Remake.

Silent Hill 2 Remake – Can't unsend this letter

Silent Hill 2 was originally released for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC back in 2001. It tells the story of James Sunderland being invited to the town of Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his wife, Mary.

An anonymous source has told us important information about today's stream.

The first thing is confirmation of our previous news, about Silent Hill 2 being one of the games being revealed. They further share other important details along with it.
  • It will be developed by Bloober Team, famous of The Medium, and the Layers of Fear series.
  • The game will offer an over-the-shoulder camera view.
  • We see the return Masahiro Ito, and Akira Yamaoka.
  • The game will be a 12-month long PlayStation 5 Exclusive and also on PC. There is no release date, but the game will be available for wishlisting on the PlayStation Store after the reveal.
  • The graphics have been described as 'amazing' and something that is truly next-gen.

We don't know what are the plans of the title after the 12-month launch, but a PS5 and PC exclusivity sounds like what Sony has planned for incorporating PC as part of the release schedule for games going forward, and with a title like Silent Hill 2 Remake to start that partnership, it is indeed looking like a fruitful relationship.

We have no doubt about the authenticity of our source, so we highly recommend you get excited at the return of one of the most iconic entries in the series yet.

The game was revealed during a 'Silent Hill Transmission' live stream on Wednesday and is being developed by Bloober Team, the Polish studio behind The Medium, Layers of Fear and Blair Witch.

The game will be released for PlayStation 5 as a console exclusive, as well as PC, Konami said, and original creators such as art director Masahiro Ito and composer Akira Yamaoka are said to be "closely" involved.

Mateusz Lenart, the creative director behind Bloober's The Medium and Blair Witch, will lead the Silent Hill 2 project.

Bloober said it intends to recreate everything that made the original game a classic, and to add new elements to make the game world more immersive.

"Silent Hill 2 is a cult classic, and it's widely recognised as one of the best games ever made," Lenart said. "We want Silent Hill 2 to make the same strong impression today that the original game did 21 years ago.

"While we want to achieve the same end result, players' expectations evolve over time, and certain things need to be modernized to have the same or similar effect. For example, that's why we went with the over- the-shoulder camera so we can immerse the players into the game world as much as possible."

Art director Masahiro Ito said he was first approached to work on the remake three years ago.

"It's been a really long time. But now we're able to remake this title and finally we can tell you all about it so I am very excited," he said. "I had a hard time dodging the many questions from fans."

Composer Yamaoka said the remake would have "a new musical style" and also elements that would please fans.

"I am personally very happy that this game, which is more than 20 years old, is being revived again as a new game in the form of a remake," he said. "The fact that Silent Hill remains in everyone's hearts more than 20 years later makes me very happy. I couldn't be more proud."

He added: "The remake also has a new musical style, new challenges, and sound design and music that will be able to please the existing fans, and of course for the players who don't know Silent Hill 2."

Really bad graphics. Seriously. Looks like an uprezed PS3 game. Looking at the TLOU remake this looks like shit.

Looks decent. Bloober team has me cautious though.

Man, I just have this horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach that they are going to botch this so hard.

Well, we'll always have the original, either way.

Don't know what the negativity is about, trailer looked FUCKING AMAZING!

Still wish they started with the first game. Should of also been a "one last thing" moment for one of the big gaming shows.

Day 1 for me.
No it didn't are you blind? (I am blind but still saw it looked terrible)

Different sure, but so far from terrible. It's good they are putting their own interpretation/slant on the game. The town shots looked incredible.

I understand Bloober hasn't exactly set the world on fire, but I've enjoyed Blair Witch and The Medium.

I still haven't gotten around to play my original PS2 copy. Glad to see this coming soon. There is already a Steam page too!

I don't care about it not being a graphical powerhouse, but a 2080 to get 1080p60 at medium settings? Are they having a laugh?

James face is not exact therefore game bad. Apparently they themself must be a model. Contrary to what it may seem they also don't care about or played Silent Hill and just want to complain all the time to feel they can do better. It gets tiresome to read.

And no, I'm not mindlessly defending it despite SH2 being an all-time great. Remakes are overplayed.

Still looks pretty good though for the normies... and me!

Yeah it looks good if you want a westernized remake and/or have low standards.

It's just a safe complaint that doesn't mean much. This is not at all radically different to the already very visually western style and themes (ackshually it is very japanese horror!) of the original.

Could it look better and more faithful? Sure but it still looks objectively well made with budget and thought into it, can't escape that.

It's like reading the 500th pachinko comment, you know?

Which?

I see now. I know very well what it means. It follows the same designs ffs, then the original sucks too because the difference is just not that radical no matter how you spin it.

Even if it's not your cup of tea there is very little pointing to this being a cheap and quick cashgrab. Otherwise it would have been crossgen and happened long ago to start.

James didn't look good in the original pre-rendered cinematic either, so why would you think he's going to look good in this remake mimicking the same shot? For a character who is stressed and then looking into a mirror under unfavorable lighting, he *shock* doesn't look like himself.

Yeah, but now he just looks dumb. I can't put my finger on why.

This looks shockingly good to me graphically. The atmosphere is incredible. It's what I want from a new Alan Wake honestly. Also, one of my biggest nitpicks in games is that they almost always consistently fail at capturing and conveying emotion in facial expressions but James' face in that trailer portrayed stressful terror really well and the facial model and animation is very convincing.

I'm cautious. I love these games. I don't know how I feel yet.

I wish they would release all the old ones as classics on psn.

I have a bad feeling about Unreal Engine 5. Look at those weird PC requirements for 30fps.

There is something about this game that reminds me about those fan made remakes, something is off (I'm assuming it's bad animation/human models).

Bloober Team's Silent Hill 2 remake will feature a rebuilt combat system and run on Unreal Engine 5, it's been revealed.

"With a new perspective, we're rebuilding the combat system and certain set-pieces, among other things," read a PlayStation Blog by Konami producer Motoi Okamoto. "Now that you see basically what James can see, we could find new ways to keep the player on edge."

Also in the post on the PlayStation Blog, Konami revealed further details, such as that the game will be powered by Unreal Engine 5 and use its Lumen and Nanite technologies.

The game will also adopt an over-the-shoulder camera. "With that change, we want to immerse players even deeper into the game, make them feel like they are a part of this unreal world, and deliver them a more visceral experience across the board," Okamoto explained.

On Unreal Engine, he wrote: "With the possibilities of the Unreal Engine 5, we're bringing the foggy, sinister town to life in ways that were impossible up to this point. The game will delight PlayStation 5 players visually, auditorily, and sensorily.

"Some of the Unreal Engine 5 features that really shine are Lumen and Nanite. With them we're raising the graphics to new, highly-detailed and realistic levels, while turning the game's signature nerve-racking atmosphere to eleven."

Face looks fine to me, this is a man descending into madness and his own personal demon's made manifest. The caught between a dream, and reality.

Feels a bit like people who were complaining about Tess in Last of Us remake from a single photo, seconds after learning she was going to die.

Context is everything.

James is 29. He looks 54 in this trailer.

No context made Tess look better. She looks like a frail old woman in every scene she's in.
