Thread: One Piece: Set Sneak Peek (Netflix live-action series)
One of the best things about One Piece at least for me is that it's always had an old school Dragon Ball comical feel to it. Sometimes the show can be overly cartoony which I don't know will really translate well to the live action screen.

When I watched the opening episode to Cowboy Bebop I thought they did a remarkable job but the show was widely panned as garbage, feel like it's destined to happen here too.

The sets look great. It's probably gonna be hilarious seeing someone try to act out Luffy lol

I just hope it doesn't turn out to be cornball infested cringe marathon like all these new Superhero movies end up. Because the manga and the anime are both masterpieces. Anything less than outstanding and it's gonna flop tbh, there are 1,050 chapters to cover

I guess they are covering through Alabasta? A certain ship is there.

Which makes me wonder how Wokeflix is going to handle a certain character and the gags around him.

Baratie is there, and they mention Arlong's office and then Bentham's ship is there, so it's got a ton of ground to cover unless they just skip a bunch of shit or start mashing up plots.

Edit: Nevermind, I'm a dumbass. That's Alvida's ship. I was thinking it was Bentham's. Either way the figurehead should be white, not pink.

I personally really don't care for One Piece. I watched the first 2 episodes and it just didn't grab me, but I won't deny it's popularity. So fuck Netflix if they shit over this like they did with Bebop.

I think with Netflix, Amazon or Disney the sensible approach now is to by default assume any and everything is going to be shit, but occasionally just occasionally, they'll put out something that is a 7/10 series at best.
Agreed. Like recently, despite my hate for Amazon for bastardizing Tolkien's work with Rings of Power, I have to admit they nailed it with Reacher.

Disney too nailed it with The Mandalorian being the Star Wars content I've seen in years, but everything after it has been kind of shit. The Book of Boba Fett was disappointing, and Obi-Wan looks awful from what I've seen.

Not giving credit to Netflix for Arcane though. That was all Riot Games and Studio Fortiche.

This looks better than expected. Even the ruffy cast is okay imo. Sadly this will be a big turd. I have zero faith in this project.

I hope I'm wrong though.

So ignoring how silly the whole race/ethnicity/skin color/... swap concept is... it's always (as in: most of the time) to African origin black? People from India, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, etc. don' exist!? This reeks of agenda.

Cause it is an agenda. With a name like Nojiko they could have just as easily cast an asian woman in the role and no one would have batted an eye.

This is for the sake of THE MESSAGE and controversy.

Those people aren't diverse.

And so when it fails they can blame it on sexism, trabsphobia and racism, just like cowboy bebop, just like Kenobi, just like a bunch of other shows

Saw first 4 episodes and can't stop watching. Casting is on point. Really enjoying this.

I'm pleasantly surprised after the first episode. Luffy, Nami, and Zoro have chemistry and I actually laughed a lot at intentional jokes. There is some dumb/weird shit, but it kind of works because One Piece is full of that anyway. Minor spoilers Colby has Harry Potter glasses and Helmeppo's Goodbye Horses moment. But, yeah, it works. Fights have decent choreography too, although the Gum Gum attacks are very subdued. Every fight is in a small arena that makes Luffy only able to stretch about 20' or so for the finisher 🤔 but even then the CGI is not bad.

Also, I can see Nami's tummy. But that was a given - Oda probably requiered it lol

Edit:

Buggy's actually funny and a spot on take of him. WTF is going on I like this Netflix show.

Watched some clips, looks really amateurish. No reason to watch this over just watching One Piece. SFX and acting are cringe.

Everyone character is on point. Luffie is as a character will always be tough to interpret as live action.

The live action has capture essence of anime and manga. I'm very please with this adaptation.

Strong disagree. The style and look of OP does not translate well at all.

They did a good job getting it close. Didn't expect One Piece to be exact translation.

It's one of the best live action adaptations. It certainly wasn't a cash grab. It felt the creators and cast cared about One Piece. It is entertaining to me.

I'm now looking forward to next season!

Finally finished the last two episodes - some of the performances in this are getting up there at RDJ's Tony Stark in terms of nailing established fictional characters. Call that insane, but the East Blue arcs have a lot of heart and these actors got it. Zeff and Sanji, Arlong and Nami, Mihawk and Zoro, Garp and Luffy, Kuro and Kaya and Usopp, just fantastic. Some were a little weaker Usopp unfortunately, although he really did not have a super strong development the manga until a certain Grand Line arc anyway but I almost cannot imagine some of these roles with different people, especially the villains.

For the final episode, Garp has the best final boss energy I have seen in western media, only missing a Fists of Love reference. Also they very, very subtly inroduced Haki in his fight, kind of like how the anime does in Saobody. Also the Gum-Gum Battle Ax sequence in Arlong Park looked great and felt like the massive step up it was in the anime. That whole fight was way better than it had any right to be for a Netflix show.

I hoping it would end with the Strawhats heading up Reverse Mountain, but it felt right and we will get a cool fight in the first couple episodes of next season if the teaser holds.
