Saudi Arabia has bought a $1 billion chunk of Capcom and Nexon

The stake is worth more than 5% of each company

Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund has invested in Capcom and South Korean online games publisher Nexon to the tune of over $1 billion.

Bloomberg reports that the nation's Public Investment Fund has been used to invest stakes of more than 5% in both Capcom and Nexon.

Although it's not clear how much of the fund has been allocated to each investment, the report claims that the investments in Capcom and Nexon combined come to more than $1 billion.

This is the latest in a series of investments in video game and esports companies that Saudi Arabia has been making in recent years.

In December 2020 the fund acquired over $3 billion worth of stock in Activision Blizzard, Electronic Arts and Take-Two.

It's set to receive a profit on part of that investment if Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard is successfully completed, as the deal will see all shares bought out for $95, whereas thoughout December 2020 the price ranged from $79-91 per share.

The Public Investment Fund is reportedly central to crown prince Mohammed bin Salman's goal of making the Saudi economy less reliant on proceeds from oil.

PIF's continued investments in video game companies may raise concerns given Saudi Arabia's longstanding history of human rights abuses and the fact that the crown prince has been accused of ordering the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

According to its website, PIF's vision is to be "a global investment powerhouse and the world's most impactful investor, enabling the creation of new sectors and opportunities that will shape the future global economy, while driving the economic transformation of Saudi Arabia".

Good investments. They will make a nice profit. Capcom will probably be bought and Nexon does great in Asia with F2P.

It's so odd seeing countries buying into game companies. I mean China basically does the same thing, but not as a country but through a multimedia company they own.

I get that. But consider that Saudi Arabia is run off of its revenue from hydrocarbon exports. (OEC) The whole state (which is the house of Saud and all its kinfolk living their lavish lives) is dependent on that income. They know it wont last forever, so they are trying to invest in other revenue sources (as well as attempt to build local industry).

Very different than say USA, UK or S. Korea where there are major non state industries that do the revenue generation and then fund the govt via taxation.

Fuck that shit. I'll boycott any publisher that has major ownership with Mohammed bin Salman, the murderer of Washingon Post-journalist Samal Khashoggi.

Let's hope Microsoft buys up the whole industry before these murderous shitheads unload their oil money on gaming.

@Arkam and @Gold Loot Can you explain what you're outraged over? It's really terrible how republicans will rather side with Russia and Saudi-Arabia as long as it's against democrats :/

These are murderers and I don't want them own traditional publishers like Capcom. Not hard to understand.

Sure. While yes indeed MBS had Khashoggi killed, it was due to the unrest (MBS Believed) he was sewing with his critical takes on himself (the crazy young and newly minted Crown Prince) the Royal Family and the structures of the SA state and Wahhabism. So MBS had him whacked in Turkey when he said enough was enough (after years and years). Is that bad? Yes. Most would easily agree. But, you might want to also consider...

Microsoft also has buried bodies, and they did it for just profit and market-share. Sure its been a while, but lets not forget how insanely aggressive MS was in the 1990's. Massive amounts intimidation, theft, destruction of property, assaults and yes even murders.

So when you call one out and embrace the other it makes me legitimately say "Really?" Kinda as if you had said something like "Fuck Hitler for killing people, but Jeffery Dahmer is cool"

Man, I can't write what I'd like to write right now. Your relativism here is utterly disgusting. "He said enough is enough", no, he committed gruesome murder and that makes him a disguting piece of shit that cannot be excused in any way whatsoever.

Shame on you for trying to defend him. Shame on you.

He agreed with you that it was a bad thing, but then you talked nonsense about Microsoft and got called out for it. So hold back on that 'shame' bs we are not in reeeeee there is no one who cares about virtue signalling here!

MS is in no way comparable to Mohammed bin Salman. It is you who's talking nonsense.

The Saudis love fighting games, don't they? Hopefully this will lead to more and better Street Fighter games.

Dude, the United States military just months ago drone bombed an aid worker and his family, including seven children, because they didn't give a fuck about the Afghani people and cynically wanted to deliver a terrorist kill "win" to their flailing president as he botched the exit from the country. Even worse, no one took responsibility or was reprimanded in any way. Just wiped our hands of it and shrugged. We're not in the best place to get all precious about murderers right now.

Well...the US Military isn't buying game companies?

Outraged? That's a bit of a stretch. I just think gaming as a whole would be better without gigantacorps like MS buying out every corner of the market. Let third parties be third parties.

I wasn't aware conservatives were siding with SA or Russia.

That being said, fuck both those countries - they're human rights horrorshows. Also SA is a terrorist supporting state.

I've seen a lot of awful takes the past weeks where conservatives would defend Russia/Putin just to dunk on Biden. Like, how fucking dumb are these people, supporting countries that are 1000000% worse than anything Biden/democrats would ever do for America? It is so nonsensical, and so hurtful.

And then you have people here in this thread relativating the Khashoggi murder with some "but Microsoft!!1" bs. Gets my blood boiling.

What this has to do with gaming.
