Thread: WTH?! Arcane League of Legends is actually... good?

Full disclosure here, I've never played League of Legends nor do I know shit about it's lore and characters. I went into this series a complete newbie as I was curious about it after the accolades it was receiving.

Being this is an animated show based on a videogame, I expected at best a meh adaptation at best and complete crap at worst. But this show surprised me, and what I got was:

- Gorgeous 3D animation with a painted cel shaded style that makes it look like a animated Impressionist painting.
- A fantasy setting with impressive world building and a distinct visual style.
- A compelling story of two sisters through fate and circumstance end up becoming enemies.
- Interesting characters who don't neatly fall into the boxes of Good and Evil. Heroes at times are flawed and sometimes do terrible things, while Villains are sympathetic and can show kindness at times.

I was completely blown away by how good this show turned out to be. Riot Games really knocked it out of the park by hiring the right people to make this, unlike say, Blizzard with the boring as hell Warcraft movie. I breezed through the first 6 episodes on Netflix and look forward to the rest.

Just finished all the episodes. What a delightful surprise this series has been. I didn't expect a show based on fucking League of Legends to be so damn good. Season 2 can't come fast enough.

But.... it's LoL....
I have played maybe 5 games of LoL and don't know shit about the lore. Show is still amazing with well written characters and top tier animation. The animation might not be for everyone but you cannot argue it is bad or poorly done. I am telling everyone Riot is on another level and slowly taking over the world.

Riot is great at weaving lore into all their video games but it's in the setting, characters, and items. I hope some day Valorant gets the same treatment as their is more to the story than what could ever be fully explained in a tactical shooter.

I'll add it to the list. Definitely didn't expect this to be good. Even though I liked Castlevania, it felt like an exception and not a rule.
As far videogame adaptations go, I thought Arcane was a hundred times better than Castlevania.

Despite the dark atmosphere and kicksass action in the series, Castlevania annoyed me with it's shitty characters and a story desperate to mold itself into a gothic version of Game of Thrones.

Arcane on the other hand, has well written characters who are believable and a compelling story that is well-paced and has a lot of surprising twists and turns. Add to that the gorgeous stylized 3D animation the blows any animated show I've seen in recent years.

Sounds like full scale RPGs in the LoL setting could be amazing.

All this talk has got my interest, I'll be giving this a watch.

I'm going to love it then, I didn't pick up on that from CV which means your standards are high or my standards are low. Either way, it'll be worth my time. I appreciate the the feedback, I hope I like the animation/art style

Let us know what you think.

And riot is making a MMO in the LoL world. They are also making a fighting game in the same world. I wouldn't be surprised if Valorant some how has a tie in to the world.... I am not sure how but the story is still being discovered.

Just finished act 3. Overall show is a 10 out of 10. That fucking ending though…. Season 2 needs to hurry up.

Damn I wish I liked Mobas. I want to immerse myself in the world they have created but I guess I will have to wait for the mmo.

I'm of the opposite feeling. I love the show but I have no desire to play League of Legends or any of the other spinoff titles the Riot Games has planned.

You know a show is good when it can stand on it's own feet without needing to familiarize yourself with the source material. It's a fact many adaptations of videogames don't seem to take heed of.

I still have yet to watch the show, but I would really love some RPGs ala the Witcher/Dragon Age Origins/Xenoblade, tactical RPGs ala Final Fantasy Tactics, ARPGs ala Diablo, action ala Uncharted, adventure ala Zelda, maybe even city builders ala Stronghold/Anno 1404/1800 set in a universe like this filled with tons of untapped stories and lore for adventure. Heck we already have one in the vein of Battle Chasers with Ruined King.

To be honest I had thought Overwatch would have, could have expanded like this with its amazing premise (impossible in hindsight with everything that's happened at Activision-Blizzard), but I'll still take whatever League of Legends is doing.

Yeah when it boils down to it there's no fucking way I'm playing LoL especially because there is no story.

I guess I am just trying to say that I'm in love with the magepunk aesthetics that the world has and I would love to immerse myself more in the world. I don't do card games or Mobas so my next best bet will be the fighting game and then the mmo.

Nice. Will give it a watch.

I know from a lot of discussions we had so far that our tastes are a bit aligned, mate.. :)

Good news for you then because they just released a single player RPG in the League of Legends world.

And it actually looks really good.

Interesting. Turn based rpg done in the style of Battle Chasers. And the reviews are pretty favorable. Perhaps I'll give it a shot.

Hold on to your sphincter because an MMO is also in the works.

@GreyHorace

Blizzard is going to need some Immodium because they're going to be shitting their pants if that MMO takes off.

League of Legends MOBA has more players than WoW so an actual MMO in the same universe is going to do bangers.

You're potentially looking at a WoW killer here. No exaggeration.

Eh... Never played an MMO (not even WoW), and I don't plan too. Like I said earlier, Arcane may have been awesome but I have no plans to play League of Legends, though I may give Ruined King a try since it's a single-player RPG.

Had a look into it yesterday..
I'd give it a solid 10 for the art style. Sometimes it almost looks like an acrylic painting, which is marvelous.

On the story, I guess I am too old a fart for this, but I guess this would be very solid for someone who is into that kind of stuff.

I hope this art style will be used for other stuff that I might be into a bit more in future... ;)

Not a big MMO person either.

Then one day because a girl I kinda liked was playing I bought WoW.

Ended up playing about 12+ hours a day, seven days a week for about a year and a half.

I quit about a month after buying Cataclysm.

I just sort of gave up but that shit was addicting as all hell.

Now my mage and DemoLock is all gone.

That game is a fucking drug.

Tried it... quit after the first episode. Just isn't for me, I guess. I don't like any of the characters or their designs. Animation and setting look great, tho.

First episode is great. Good premise and story, interesting world building and beautiful animation. The opening Intro reminds me of Daredevils, (rap music aside.)

Also called it with the Pixar short Paperman back in 2012 that it would eventually be the future of animation, ie a combination of using modern cgi to replicate 90s anime cell shading style. The movie Klaus fully realized this but Arcane also looks like its using it, and is like watching a moving painting. I want to say Carmen Sandiago and Tangled the Series take some influence also due to their fluidity and use of light but I can't say for sure as their styles are still very different.

Then Trollhunters seems to have done its own take, using a more blocky animation that still allows stunning amount of detail, and now both Maya and the Three and He-Man and the Masters of the Universe both make amazing use of it.

So actually it looks like we have two (three?) excellent animation styles going forward. Will be interesting to see what else they bring.

Was waiting to see if Critical Drinker was going to give it a watch, given that he's been slagging a lot of Netflix content recently (Masters of the Universe Revelation, Bad Santa). So it's heartening to see him give Arcane a recommendation.

I think the art style, writing, and backgrounds are all great for the most part. Some of the characters look good, but a lot of these character designs just look fucking awful to me.

The show is pretty damn decent and worth a watch. I think it's very overhyped though. I think the fact that it's not terrible amidst a sea of garbage elevated the level of attention and hype the show got. It doesn't have a lot of competitors and there's been a lot of fucking stinkers released this year, so it stands out more by being more earnest and straightforward in its story telling instead of trying to sell some political message.

Watched the first episode. Liked it. Visually interesting. Interesting world. Good characters so far. Even though its focused on teen characters, feels mature enough to appeal beyond that.

It really makes you think, how nobody cares that it is produced by one of the most evil corporations on the planet. I guess people are willing to tolerate evil and other people's misery as long as they are entertained.

I care, I'm just tired of going on about it to people's ambivalence.
