As a counterpoint to my thread of Old media you're enjoying because most current media is crap, let's talk about media in recent years that you all have enjoyed and risen above much of the crap we have to contend with nowadays. Here are some recent media that I've enjoyed:

Dune (2021) - Finally, after much hype and waiting, director Denis Villeneuve finally released his film adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic scifi novel this year. And man, did it deliver. Gorgeous visuals, fantastic visual effects, top notch performances from an all-star cast and an incredible soundtrack by Hans Zimmer. Despite some minute woke elements being inserted (Liet Kynes turned into a woman), this is the best onscreen version of Herbert's book and I'm looking forward to Part 2 in 2023.

Arcane: League of Legends (2021) - It should have sucked. An animated series based on the mega popular MOBA League of Legends? And airing on Netflix too which is home to a number of animated duds (Masters of Universe Revelations, Dragon's Dogma), so there was no reason to think that Arcane would be anything but crap. But Riot Games and French animation studio Fortiche have done the impossible, and made what is probably the best animated series I've seen in years. It's got gorgeously rendered 3d animation, kickass action scenes, compelling characters and a great story that deftly weaves political intrigue and heartbreaking tragedy. Who would have thought that fucking League of Legends would give us one of the best things to happen in the pop culture landscape?

Those are my picks for now. I'll post more when I've given it some more thought. Let's hear all your picks for New Media that's good.

The Mandalorian (2019-present) - After a Sequel Trilogy that crashed and burned, it was nice to have a series that harkens back to old school Star Wars in the best possible way. It's everything I loved about George Lucas' space fantasy saga but with a fresh voice behind it, courtesy of Jon Favreau.

Wanted to write this as well, but I am not 100% sure if it's not just the effect of Disney Star Wars being so bad that this automatically wins.

But yeah, most of it is darn good.
It's the kind of Star Wars I wanted to see after leaving the cinema after watching RotJ as an 8 year old in 1983.

IMO, The Mandalorian is the one property in the Disney Era Star Wars that actually FEELS like the Original Trilogy. Hell, it feels more like the OT than even the Prequels. That's because Jon Favreau went back to basics and drew inspiration from the stuff that influenced George Lucas, like Westerns, Japanese cinema, and World War 2 films.

Foreign stuff. Basically.

I love Fauda, from Israel. I also like a lot of Korean shows like Hospital Playlist and Prison Playbook - they're simple but no woke stuff whatsoever. Another one I'm watching is Colombian Soap Opera La Reina Del Flow. It's about reggaeton artists, crime, and its some silly shit but it's fun and also not woke infected like Brazilian media.

Apologies for this thread necro, but I just had to post after watching this:

The Northman (2022) - Holy shit. A viking movie that feels authentic to the period it's portraying whilst having an all white cast? It's hard to believe this film was made in the current year, but here we are. Unlike the sanitized portrayal of Norsemen we often get in media (History Channel's Vikings feels like a high school play in comparison), Robert Eggers' film is chock to the brim with violence, gore and the surreal mysticism of the Viking Age. The Northman's portrayal of Scandinavian beliefs and rituals will have you questioning whether the supernatural events in the film really are happening or just in the minds of it's characters. Eggers' expert direction helps in selling the illusion (especially his use of long cuts), that at times it feels like you're watching a fantasy film.

Add to this some powerhouse performances from Alexander Skarsgard, Anya Taylor Joy, Nicole Kidman and others, and you have one of the greatest historical films ever made. For me, The Northman of the best films I've seen in years.

Probably my favorite movie I've seen in a long, long time. Bought that shit physical the minute I could.

Got another new piece of media that I enjoyed watching.

The Pale Blue Eye (2023) - A slow paced, historical, gothic murder mystery starring Christian Bale and Harry Melling as a young Edgar Allan Poe? Sign me up. While not perfect, it's a beautifully shot film set in the heart of winter and has a some great performances. Bale is excellent as always, but it's Melling as Poe who really dominates the film. Who would have thought Dudley Dursley would become the best actor out of the Harry Potter alumni? I'll not spoil anything, but let me just say this mystery will haunt you much like Poe's short stories did. I heartily recommend it.

All really good things that restored a little bit of my faith in current shows/movies. Hopefully this Game of Thrones prequel is good. I'll be watching it soon.
