I'm the Captain Now

Besides gaming, one of my hobbies the last 15 years has been watching MMA. When I was a kid I loved WWF/WCW... til i accpted that it was fake. However years later I discoverd Pride Fighting Championships. A japan based MMA org that was similar to teh WWF in style but the fights were real. Since then I have been hooked.

Over the years I have watched so many brilliant fighters come and go. A few however seem immortals in my mind as they are the fighters I really liked. So here is my person top five. (not the GOATS, who I enjoyed watching fight)

1. Fedor Emelianenko - Dude was ice cold and respectful, despite being the baddest man on the planet for near a decade. Fighters like him come once in a lifetime. Seriously name another HW that has been anywhere near as dominant for that length... its not happening again any time soon. And he wasnt a Floyd Maywether fighter where he plays it safe and uses his bread and butter every fight. Fedor came in and beat opponents using their strengths against them. Some in clear dominations. Think about this, the top fighter in the world... is a medium sized and well spoken guy? That doesnt compute these days. ANd as crazy as it is, he is still fighting. The man is a fighter who will be remembered for decades.

iu

2. Kazushi Sakuraba - The actual Pro Wrestler who came to MMA hand hin hat... and whooped some ass! This man was such a super athlete that he was able to school technicians based solely on his athleticism and reflexes. And during that success he exhibited a flare that was rarely seen in that day. Pride put the man through the grinder with matches he had no business fight, like against Cro Cop of Wandy. Despite that abuse the guy carried on and grave us such memorable fight as the embarrassing of Royce Gracie for ~ an hour. Also another super nice guy who didnt do false bravado.
iu

3. Cro Cop - WHen this guy came on the scene it was like death himself had decided to try MMA. Cro Cop was fast, powerful, accurate and lethal. Took him a couple mixed rules matches to sort out his sprawl, but once he did he was a phenom to watch. Sure he did have that KO set back at the hands of Randleman, but beyond that his Pride run was as storied as they come. All the way up to losing (IMO) the greatest MMA fight of all time to Fedor. SO many thought Cro Cop was going to send Fedor to the cemetery with his left high kick and he couldnt do it. But its ok, he went on to win a handful more world championships. For most of his career he was an arrogant prick, but he could back up every word.
iu

4. The Axe Muderer - Wanderlei Silva - Arguably the most entertaining fighter this side of Crazy Horse. Wand brought the pain with his powerful (and wild) hooks and his near fatal knees. He came to Pride and made it HIS home and ruled his weight class with a ruthless attitude. He nearly killed Sakuraba and fought CroCop to a draw (the first time). The man was an absolute brawler and threw with reckless abandonment and it was mesmerizing. Also his entrance music was Sand Storm! His KO to Rampage is a classic example of someone being destroyed with knees in the Thai clinch. Fucking brutal!
iu

5. GSP - Dude was such a class act. He beat everyone they threw at him... and was a nice guy about it. The only flaw he ever displayed was that lack of killer instinct. He never tried/wanted to hurt anyone. This led to stubborn people (hardy) not tapping when locked dead to rights knowing GSP wont break anything. Probably the most dominant fighter in UFC history and maybe the nicest.

Who are yalls favorite five fighters?

Carlos Newton, Josh Barnett, Chuck Liddell, Igor Vovchanchyn, Don Frye

Too many great fighters, this is a tough one. You focussed on the greats of the PRIDE era (and GSP), which was just magical. And your list is objectively correct. ;)

Not a list of my GOATs, but who I enjoy(ed) and respect the most.
In no particular order, just the first 5 that come to my head.

Anderson Silva

While I didn't like his personality, most of his fights were amazing and truly special. Such a gifted fighter, the stuff he pulled off was mind blowing. Calm, but deadly, being able to end a fight at any point, even with submissions. No one did to great fighters like Vitor Belfort or Rich Franklin what he did. One of a kind.

Carlos Condit

While slowing down with age, in his prime this man was an absolute killer. Always dangerous, brutal finishes, great heart, many wars. How he came back and finished Rory Macdonald was so impressive. Even on his back, he was and still is so aggressive with vicious elbows. Also, such a nice guy, no bullshit, no fake shit talking. Love to see him fight, even now that he got more strategic in his approach.

Jose Aldo

While being on a steady decline in recent years, Aldo in the WEC and the early UFC days was a total beast. Incredibly explosive punches and kicks, his leg kicks were brutal. Ask Faber about it. I've never seen more vicious kicks than Aldo throws. And for a standup guy, he still managed it to destroy wrestlers with ease, like Chad Mendes.

Valentina Shevchenko

Amazingly skilled, great technique, smart fighting style. I love watching her, she does things right. Exceptional striking, while still having very good trips and throws, and a very good ground game. My women MMA GOAT.

Mark Hunt

He has his flaws and isn't the most well rounded or athletic fighter. But man does he bring the heat. He was around for so long and fought many, many wars against the best of the world. I have huge respect for him.

Loved watching those guys (and gal) fight. Hunt was just off my honerable mentions list. Man had dynamite in his hands. And one has to love the slow maturation of his MMA career. Silva is/was one of the greatest fighters and was in awe watching some of his fights. But I could never look past his attitude and disrespect in the ring.
So many great fighters in such a short span of time.

Yeah as I've mentioned, I don't like his attitude and behavior in general at all. I wanted him to lose, still enjoyed seeing him fight. Mostly. I don't even want to think about the Maia bout.

I highly prefer fighters who are humble and have a non-BS attitude. Fighters who leave everything in the cage.

All-time favorites to watch for me would be:

1. Georges St-Pierre
2. 'Rampage' Jackson
3. 'Shogun' Rua
4. Stephen Thompson
5. Carlos Condit
I knew Rampage would show up as he was super entertaining when he was young. The slams, showmanship and ability to back it up (unless you happen to be an Axe Murderer). I dont think anyone will ever forget the time he powerbombed Arona. Hell I loved it when he would be the third man announcing along side Bas and Quadros. Rampage just said what he felt and it was usually hilarious.

If you haven't seen it, check out Shark Fights 13. Don Frye was the color commentator, and he said some of the funniest, craziest shit I have ever heard. It was legendary.

Your list is pretty much my list.

No love for Jon Jones here?

I was also close to mention Brock Lesnar, only because of the entertainment factor. He participated in many exciting fights because he was so hyped and hated.
Obviously juiced up to the max, but man, he was athletic. Hideous standup, but he was already "old" when entering the game. I think if he would've started in his early 20s with MMA, he would've been one of the greats.

Kinda have respect for him stepping into the cage and taking it as seriously as he did.

No Jones is kinda random, but it is about people's favorite fighters not who is "the best". Cuz if it was P4P GOAT discussion he would likely be part of the discussion... but he is also a dumbass who makes so very poor choices sometimes.

Never like anything about Brock besides his look. As he did look like an action figure come to life. None of his fights were any good. I mean him hammer fisting Mir to oblivion was something I guess.

Here is the guys career
first fight was against a 2-5 kickboxer
Get submitted by Mir in <2min
Gets a decision over a past prime Heath Herring
Gets a title fight for some random reason and catches Coture with a punch and takes the belt.
Beats Mirs Face in making them 1-1
Carwin beats the breaks off him (anyone else and teh ref would have stopped it) but gasses between rd1 & 2 and Brock gets a choke.
Cain mauls Brock who has no answers.
Overween destroys and hurts Brock with knees in the first round.
Gets a decsion over Hunt that gets overturned cuz Brock pissed hot.

Dude never beat anyone worth a damn (during their prime). BUt I guess those WWE fans money is what was important to UFC.

I was joking about Jones. I don't like him at all on a personality level and while super talented, I don't like watching him anymore. He was really great up until the Chael fight. But I can't stand him and his fighting style anymore. So dirty, eye pokes all the time etc. It's disgraceful. Also, he's a total idiot who thinks he's smart as hell.

Regarding Brock:
The UFC HW division was pretty weak for a long time and he brought some spectacle and emotions into it. Never had a boring fight and was very entertaining for me. His record and achievements weren't great, as you've already explained. But I think he still had at least a respectable MMA career for coming in this late.

Diaz brothers, though more Nick than Nate to be honest. Nick's foray into pride (33) and Gomi was an epic fight ending in a gogoplata, he was higher than a kite too (which did get the win overturned IIRC) but I respect him more for it if we really want to be honest.
diazvsgomi.gif

Chris Lytle, when he realized he probably wasn't going to be a champion and totally changed his game, made for some pretty epic fights and was there to entertain with sheer determination and grit. How can you not love a guy who just comes out to win but only if it's an exciting fight.
tTm7tDw.gif

GSP, nothing to be said here. His wins against Hughes to win the title and Bisping after coming off several years layaway were epic, no one at the parties I was at were in their seats with those wins.
giphy.gif

Black Beast Derrick Lewis, he hilarious and really dangerous. His recent fight with Blaydes was amazing and one of those fights where I wasn't sure if Blaydes would ever get up after being KO that badly
VacantSkinnyAmericanredsquirrel-size_restricted.gif

Rose Namajunas , seems like such a cool person and grounded, hard to watch her fight and not root for her.
Zhang-Weili-knockout-gif-smaller.gif

Shevchenko, a monster. always a masterclass in striking
