Mushy Peas are a side dish popular in the United Kingdom. They are made from peas being mushed up and combined with ingredients such as butter or cream.

They go well with grilled fish and other foods as well.

What are your thoughts about Mushy Peas? Do you appreciate a healthy and tasty side dish or are you against this abomination of cuisine?

I for one thoroughly enjoy it and would love to have mushy peas with various cooked meals. I am a bit lazy though so I just boil the peas and eat it without mushing it up usually. But I still love mushy peas.

I think regular peas are just OK so i'm not sure if I will be so hot on mushy ones but I'm open minded :)

This is foul, You brits need to be shunt to the depths of hell for this. An I devised a plan for it.

At an undisclosed location known only as "The Pea Pit," our mushy pea lover is lured under the pretense of attending the annual Pea Fest. Upon arrival, they are greeted not by fellow pea fans, but by a bizarre cult dedicated to the eradication of mushy peas.

The Ordeal:
  • Pea Overload: They are first seated at a table where they are forced to consume vast quantities of mushy peas, not just plain but mixed with every unpalatable ingredient imaginable - from stale cheese to fermented fish sauce. The mushy peas keep coming in endless servings, each more vile than the last.
  • Pea Bath: After reaching the brink of pea-induced nausea, they are then dunked into a warm, thick vat of the most watery, overcooked mushy peas, now dyed an unnatural luminous green with food coloring for added psychological torment.
  • The Pea Golem: Next, they are coated in a layer of thick pea paste, molded into various shapes by cult members, turning them into a living statue or "Pea Golem." They are then paraded around the festival grounds while villagers throw more mushy peas at them, chanting anti-pea slogans.
  • Pea Room: For the final act, they are locked in a small, dimly lit room where the walls, floor, and ceiling are lined with mushy peas. The air is thick with the smell of overcooked legumes. Here, they are subjected to an audio loop of people gagging and describing peas in the most revolting ways, interspersed with the sound of peas being mashed.

Aftermath:
  • After what feels like an eternity, they are released, forever changed, with a profound aversion to even the word "pea." They are given a small bag of dried peas as a parting gift, with the warning, "Never again."

The only thing I mash peas into is mashed potatoes. And I love to mix my peas and mashed potatoes. Good combo right there.

I also do the same with my green beans!

I wouldn't be surprised if UK's next big recipe is just smushing bread into a cup of water and then pouring it out next to the giant pile of beans.

Let me introduce you to the wonders of bread and butter pudding.

Joe Strummer kind of wrote a song about them:

Saw Joe Strummer twice when he dropped both of his albums with this outfit. Got to meet him at a vinyl signing event before one of them. The guy was absolutely humble. I walked up asked for his signature and expected to be moved along. Nope. Joe asked me a bunch of questions...like he genuinely was interested in what I had to say, share and interact with me.

He was a real one.

That's awesome. I'm a big fan, so I'm glad to hear he's a decent guy IRL. Kind of jealous because I never got to see him perform though lol.

I like peas. They're great as a side, vegan protein powders that utilize pea protein powder taste good with the right amount of stevia and/or monk fruit. Never had mushy peas though. If they taste like butter I'm willing to try them. @Mickmrly what foods do you recommend them with? I see pics of fries, fish n chips

I don't dislike peas but think mushed up to baby food consistency wouldn't make them any better .

Same! We met him after they played in NYC. We were kids and had nothing to get signed but just shot the shit with him for like ten minutes. He didn't even act like he had anywhere to be until his wife/road manager came and pulled him. He told her to put us on the guest list for the next night's show in Philly. We drove all the way there and she did not put us on lol

The lyric does make me want to try mushy peas lol

I think it goes well with pies, breadcrumbed fish/chicken and more generally with meals that have gravy. It's sort of like using mashed potato, but not. I thought that they taste a bit like butter, but that's probably because I put actual butter in mine.
