For me it was Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 on the PS2 which was just a year before Need for Speed: Underground.

EA would bring back Hot Pursuit in 2010.

What was your first Need for Speed and does the soundtrack still slap?

First one was the PC version of the original at a friends house but I don't remember much. The first one I bought was NFSIII:Hot Pursuit for PS1 and this is my favourite track:

Does the music from the showcase video count? ;) I remember replaying these videos when I was playing this game as a kid.

The very first one I played was the original on the 3DO.
As far as soundtracks, the interactive music in in Hot Pursuit can't be topped.

NFS Hot Pursuit on PC. I thought it was wild how you could play BOTH modes either as the driver or as the cop. With the spike strips and violent ramming, the cop mode felt like a precursor to Burnout's emphasis on car-crashes.

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit on PC. Hated the game actually. BUt I only paid $10 for a bootleg copy at a computer show. The game just controlled like shit and the "road/track" was super narrow. I was using my MS Sidewinder gamepad and it was just not fun. Looked great though compared to anything on PSX at the time.

Actually gave up on the series until Underground (PS2) came out and was amazingly fun! Loved Underground 2..... then it became a series of disappointments again with Carbon and other such half backed drivel.

Last few I cannot even remember.

First played the original on the Playstation 1. I loved the unlockable cheat car where the horn literally blew the other cars off the road.

Totally agree Hot Pursuit 2 had best soundtrack. Love Hot Action Cop. Bought their cd after discovering them in that. Still listen to it to this day.

The Need for Speed on the 3DO back in 1994. Goddamn, I loved that game so much. As for soundtrack, I quite liked almost all of it, especially the rock tracks. Here are a couple of random selections:

What did you think of Need for Speed: Most Wanted? It was the one after Underground 2 but before Carbon. I personally really liked it, gameplay was a mix of Underground and Hot Pursuit.

I played this one on the WiiU, which may have been the superior version at the time. It looked good, but never really pulled me in honestly. I doubt I put 5 hours into it sadly. Sadder.... I think I gave NFS Carbon on the Wii (BARF!!) more time. (please god forgive me for my sins)

I think why It didnt resonate was the fact that I had played so much PGR2/4, Forza 3/4 and Burnout Paradise (a game I worked on!)that it felt like a step back in comparison. When Underground came out, it was a pallet cleanser after insane amounts of GT3 A-Spec. And that drift mode was addicteve as all hell. It was Tony Hawk ProSkater with cars almost.

Oh and I forgot to give a major shout out to NFS underground on the Gameboy Advanced! Holy shit was that better than it should have been. I took that on a 3 week business trip and played teh fuck out of it. "To the windows!!!" (if you played you will get that last bit)

Oh no, I meant the original Most Wanted, not the remake by Criterion. It was like Underground 2 in the daytime and you could get into hot pursuits with the police who came at you with SUVs and helicopters. I played it on the original Xbox but it was also ported to the Xbox 360.

I think it also got a PSP version (like when Underground 2 was ported to PSP as Underground Rivals).

The cutscenes are standard Need for Speed cheese but the gameplay is a lot of fun with a progression ladder of you getting to the top of the Blacklist, defeating the top racer in Rockport to reclaim your custom BMW M3 GTR.

Need for Speed Shift was pretty good too in my opinion. I really liked the sense of speed in that entry.

Holy fuck. Just went into the Way Back machine.

My first NFS was NFS2 on PS1. I cant remember if the soundtrack was any good (No licensed music back then) but Hot Pursuit 2 was the highlight of the entire series for me. Hot Pursuit on PS3 was great as well.
