Thread: Your favorite superfoods? (LOTS OF PICTURES AND INFOGRAPHS - WOW!)

I try and eat healthy. Rarely get fast food, etc, because I know I have an addictive personality. It's hard for me to stop anything once I start. The trick is - don't start. My only real weakness would be the vending machine at work. I always sleep in later than I should and end up grabbing Pop Tarts out of there or whatever.

With that said, I wanna talk about superfoods. Yes, it's a marketing term, but certain foods are loaded with nutrients and are great daily drivers. Like, I'm pretty sure you could solely consume the foods/beverages in this post and be healthier than 90% of the population.

Let's talk about them! :)

1. Water

Sounds simple, but so many people neglect to drink enough water. I would definitely consider it a superfood, and I'm not alone. I get mine straight from the tap and try and get in about 4 liters a day if I can. Roughly a gallon. You need water. Quit pretending like you don't. Drink more water. Water is life.

2. Kiwi

Perhaps my favorite superfood. Kiwi are def a low-key hitter on the nutrient spectrum and so many are ignorant to just what nutritional powerhouses they are. I'm constantly preaching the magic of the kiwi. I eat these damn things skin and all. No shame in my game. Death to lesser fruit.

3. Kale

Kale is probably the most well-known superfoods out there. Maybe the first time I ever even heard the term was when kale surged in popularity. Not just for hippies, kale is essential and blends well into smoothies, and is a salad essential imho. Kale is fittingly bursting with vitamins K and A, but also has a ton of C as well. Vitamin K prevents osteoprosis, regulates blood sugar, prevents clotting, and protects your immune system. Vitamin A is great for your lung health. Overall Kale contains lots of minerals too despite having a very low calorie count.

4. Eggs

Eggs, for some reason, are always the point of nutritional debate. Anyone who wants to convince you that eggs are bad is full of it. Especially the yolks, they're super healthy! Packed with all of your essential amino acids, eggs are a complete protein which will make your vegan friends weep. They raise your HDL (good) cholesterol and contain choline which are vital for brain and liver function. They're very cheap to find, easy to prepare, and super versatile. When it comes to nutrient density, it's hard to beat eggs.... pun intended.

5. Sardines

Last but not least, I want to talk about another underrated nutritional superstar - sardines. Not everyone's favorite, I get it, but man I love eating these straight out of the can with some Frank's Red Hot on top. One 3.2 oz can of sardines contains 20g of protein, 300mg of calcium (more than a glass of milk), and are chock full of vitamins D (immunity and mood enhancer) and B12 (good for red blood cells). Most infamously, they're overloaded with omega 3 fatty acids which prevent blood clotting and maintain your blood pressure. Also, compared to most other canned fish, sardines have an very low mercury content as they are a much, much, smaller fish which feed mostly on plankton.

6. Coffee

Okay, one last one since I'm legit brewing up a pot right now. Coffee. Specifically when served black. Coffee is maybe a controversial one, but America (the greatest country ever) legit runs on it. Tea is for commies. I love coffee, and grind whole beans, heat up water in my stove top kettle, and pour into my french press. I don't drink anything fancy, but I'm legitimately hooked on the stuff. My only real vice tbh. Either way, coffee gets misconstrued as being unhealthy... that simply isn't the case though. Coffee is loaded with antioxidants, and drinking 32oz a day significantly lowers your risk of getting cancer, type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease, and heart disease. Also - caffeine. Sweet, sweet, caffeine.

WHAT ABOUT YOU?! WHAT SUPERFOODS DID I NEGLECT TO MENTION?!! PLEASE TELL ME YOUR HEALTHY SECRETS!!!

It's expensive, but drinking raw unpasteurized milk was something I'd definitely call a superfood. Could drink a half gallon of it easily in one sitting. All the nutrients are in tact. It's nothing like typical milk, raw milk is on a completely different level

Goji berries as well are excellent. Kombucha too

Some useful superfoods that I consume daily

1. tea -- healthy mix of caffeine, L-theanine, and antioxidants
2. raw cacao -- rich in antioxidants that protect skin from sunburn
3. bone gelatin -- provides all but one essential amino acid (provided by raw cacao)
4. milk kefir -- gut health

Is it gross?
I think it's kind of nasty yea, especially if you drink them plain. It's like drinking sour milk imo, but some like it. Never did try the chocolate or fruit flavored ones, which probably taste good. But based on what plain kefir milk tastes like, I'm out. Too much sugar for something that tastes like liquid sour cream. Would rather reach for a couple of yogurt products, other fermented options

Kale is disgusting. Never had sardines but I image those are too. Coffee isn't good either, let's stop pretending it is. Green tea is better.

By the way, I want to give a huge shout out to salad. The whole Simpsons bit makes people underestimate how great salad is. It's so refreshing and light. A giant salad for lunch can hold me over until dinner time with enough veggies + some protein in there. I've been making 2-3 salads weekly for the past couple of years and I still love it. Can't get tired of it if you change up the dressings and some of the veggies from time to time.

I eat 4 eggs per day (for 5 of the days per week). If I google it, I see that this is supposed to be the most unhealthy thing ever and it will kill me.

I also only drink water, but I also sometimes drink those fake sugar powdered drink mix packets. The ones with 120mg of caffeine are a nice way to start the morning. Then a non-caffeine one later on is nice. I'm sure that'll kill me too. Everything kills us.

I changed my diet at the start of covid, where I eliminated many processed+fried foods and the positive effects have been great. Far less lethargic, feel more energetic, in better moods, don't physically feel like shit, rarely crave any junk and I swear it feels like my heart is having an easier time. I still treat myself to unhealthy crap occasionally and I really feel the shitty affects of it after eating it, but otherwise the mere sight of most junk and fast foods is highly off putting these days.

My favorite lunchtime snack for a while has been a bunch of fresh fruit which I chop up into in a big bowl and cover in yoghurt - usually a banana, a red apple, 20-30 black grapes, a dozen strawberries, a handful of blueberries, sometimes a pear, smother the lot in raspberry yoghurt, dig in with a big spoon and wash it down with no doubt far too much OJ or tropical fruit smoothie. The several different textures, sweetness and sharpness makes it very satisfying.

That's a lot of sugar but I always feel physically amazing for a few hours afterwards, so I guess it's all good.

I definitely agree on water, eggs and sardines. Other ones...

Turmeric
Cilantro
Spirulina
Green tea
Blueberries
Blackberries
Moringa
Rib eye steak (or any steak for that matter)
