Thread: Your favorite licensed games?

Let's talk about licensed games that are actually good, if not great and not made as a cheap cash-in to a popular IP. I decided to make this topic after playing through South Park: The Stick of Truth.

I realize I'm very LTTP with this title since it was released way back in 2014, but this is the first time I've played it as part of my PS4 backlog. And all I have to say is just... WOW. As someone who's not really a big fan of the show but enjoys it enough for it's hilariously biting satire of everything, this game is a near perfect translation of it. From the animation style, the jokes, the voices and all the other things that make South Park such a memorable show. And it's turn based rpg combat system is pretty good too and incorporates some of the shows most hilariously outrageous and grossout gags.

My only real complaint is how short it is for an rpg and other gameplay niggles. But aside from that, this is a fantastic licensed game that uses it's IP to great effect to craft a great gameplay experience.

As for other licensed games I would rank as the best I've played:

So what licensed games are your faves D-Pad?

Trespasser (1998) - PC

Game was so ahead of its time. Despite some wonky box/arm physics, this is still the best video game use of the Jurassic Park property.

Whoa, I'll admit I only ever played a demo for the game, but I never once realized it was a Jurassic Park tie-in. I thought it was just some rando dinosaur game. LOL Damn, how could I have missed that all these years? o_O

Was it the demo where you are on the roof of a "portable" construction building and there were like 3-5 raptors? Cuz that is the one I played and it sold me to the moon and back on the game. I shot out the supports on one of the trailer/portable buildings and it crushed two raptors. The last one(s) I gimped with my last few shots and sprinted to the goal.

I honestly don't remember, since it was over 20 years ago. I just remember being terrible at it and that the controls/aiming/physics were something else (admittedly cool at the time). Lol

The Pipeworks Godzilla trilogy of fighting games. I loved that shit growing up. I'd attribute these games as much as the movies as making me a big Godzilla fan, as playing them introduced me to a lot of monsters that appeared in other Godzilla movies that I eventually watched.

The sixth gen James Bond games were also a big part of my childhood in terms of licensed games. I loved these games, too. Hell, it's because of these games that the Walther P99 is Bond's sidearm in my mind moreso than the PPK (and also why I bought one).

Stranglehold was very good, not as good as Max Payne, but still very fun to play. I've seen a lttp video of the game recently and it seems that it's aged quite poorly. I don't know if I'd want to ruin my memories of the game by replaying it myself.

Absolutely Turtles in Time, what a magical fucking game.

I'm sure it doesn't really 'hold up' today, but at the time...

It holds up! It even holds up against the slew of (quite good!) indie beat 'em ups over the last ~10 years. The combat is head and shoulders above most of these sort of games. The music is still incredible (I blast those stereo TV speakers!) My kids play the SNES cart on a regular basis. We also have the defunct Ubisoft remake of TMNT4 which is... okay but I'm glad I have my cartridge.

I love licensed games. Even shitty ones. That's what I miss about pre-mobile phone gaming. You'd have a ton of licensed games. Lot of crap but some decent stuff. Now developers just throw it on the Apple store. Don't even bother with consoles.

As for favorite newer licensed games.

This game just nails the atmosphere and feeling of the future war from the original Terminator and T2. I've played through it 3 times and still get a kick out of it.

When you got a good group together playing this is amazing. Sadly it's older, not a lot of players anymore. Thankfully they did add a single player where you play as Jason and progress through stages with objectives.

I'd say Amped: Freestyle Snowboarding. I'd consider that a licensed game cause it's just snowboarding brands, etc. My god is it fun, just an absolutely joy to play.

As others have mentioned, the 16 bit era was great for licensed properties, especially Disney games. Magical Quest: Starring Mickey Mouse is brilliant. Goof Troop too, fun coop puzzle game. Shinji Mikami actually worked on it and parts of Goof Troop's code/game engine was used in the original Resident Evil, lol.

Arkham Asylum - I usually can't stand aything superhero but Arkham Asylum was fantastic. I don't like the later Batman games nearly as much.

Kotor - Great Game I've played many times but it's been a while since I last played it I should probably play it again and see if I still love it

Guardians of the Galaxy - A shockingly great game. I only played it because people kept saying it was good and it came to Game Pass so why not. It was SO damn good, I loved it. People also said the Avengers campaign was good and it was also on Game Pass, it was so full of cringe and everything I hate about comic book superheroes

Ditto. AA and AC were easily my favorites out of the series and probably my favorite licensed games. I did a replay of AA pretty recently and that still holds up. Then I started AC right after and the locked 30fps just killed it for me. I couldn't continue. AC was my favorite back in the PS3 days so I don't know if I'm suffering from nostalgia or if it actually had a different frame rate back then.

The Batman Arkham games really captured the "feel" of being Batman, which I usually place greater importance on more than typical gameplay related things like for non-licensed games. Much like how the sixth gen James Bond games really made you "feel" like James Bond, hence why I love games like Nightfire and Everything or Nothing.
