Microsoft is reportedly in talks with Hideo Kojima to publish the next game

That's according to VentureBeat, which claims Xbox hopes to make the second game from Death Stranding studio Kojima Productions the focus of a plan to leverage Japanese talent.

While the site's source was unable to confirm if Microsoft has yet to actually sign a deal for the new Kojima game, it claims a Kojima Productions figure spotted on Xbox boss Phil Spencer's shelf during a presentation in February (pictured, top) was hinting at a potential partnership.

I'll believe that 2 years after the game's release.

IF a new Kojima-game comes to Xbox, I expect one of these two things to happen:
- the game is announced multiplatform shortly after for PS5
- Kojima is working on 2 games and the other one, which will be PS5-exclusive, looks much more interesting/ambitious

I don't believe for one second that Kojima would ever do something that hurts Sony. But it'd be cool if it was true, sure.

He's an independent developer contracted on a per game basis. If Sony opted out of publishing his next game for whatever reason (and if there's one word that can describe Death Stranding it's "divisive"), he's gotta find someone who'll do it. Bills gotta get paid son.

I can't see why Sony would decline to publish his next game. Did Death Standing not meet their sales expectations?
A Kojima Xbox exclusive would be surprising.

No idea, just saying it's a possibility. It definitely sold fairly well but there were some murmurings floating around a few months back that it didn't exactly live up to Sony's expectations in some way.

That would be known as betrayal

I don't know what you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert)

Haven't played DS myself, but I watched a play through last year. The game was hyped as a genre-defining game, but I failed to see what was so revolutionary about it. I thought the story was weak and the ending was confusing and stupid.

I loved Death Stranding, so I hope his team gets funding for a new strange project. Honestly, Microsoft funding it would be preferred in my case, since I want to play on PC anyway when given the choice.

Sony letting him go would be a mistake, imo. I'm sure Sony didn't quite expect to invest as much money as they did into the next project from the Metal Gear guy, to be met with as divisive a reception as it was, but building on that relationship can only bring positive things.

On the other hand, it would be a huge get for Microsoft, a continued statement of intent towards their console exclusives.

Who knows? Maybe Sony was just outbid, and Kojima went with the bigger budget.

Ehhhhhhh...on the one hand Microsoft has been throwing around a ton of money lately, so that could be a possibility.

Brap brings up a good point though. Sony's been going through a pretty obvious cultural change recently, and Kojima's the guy who brought us Quiet, the sniper who has to have her tits and ass out to breathe. Maybe a combination of Death Stranding not soaring to record highs, Kojima running up a higher bill than anticipated (wouldn't be the first time), and the cultural shift at Sony would lead us down this road.

Then again I'm secretly an idiot.

This would be quite the coup for MS, and a major black eye publicity wise for Sony, who already seem to have lost any clear cohesion and vision for what Playstation is now, while simultaneously seemingly no longer showing interest in continuing with what Playstation has always been up until now.

I can totally buy this rumour being true basically. It would be the first expenditure of cash MS had made in a while that would actually seem to benefit the industry too, instead of just be being used to spite Sony and Nintendo (even if that would also be a major reason to do it).

Really would hammer home just how buggered Sony management is right now though.

I just really wanna know what's going on at Sony management lol. I honestly can't wait to see what MS and Sony show off in the summer, cause MS is gonna be bringing the heat BIG TIME in a way like they've never done before. Gonna be interesting to see how Sony responds, this gen's gonna be super competitive which is the best thing about all this.

MS has been getting all the big announcements lately. This one would also be big if true. Japanese support has been getting better on XB over the years, but is still a weakness in my opinion. This would help fill in some of that gap. I think Sony could steal a lot of the thunder back this Summer by showing a back to back God of War Ragnarok/Horizon 2 trailer. We will probably just get a Horizon pushed to 2022 announcement instead though.

They've been desperately trying to bring back Japanese games to Xbox

Sony seems to be betting highly on their 1st party games to carry the weight of the brand. That sounds very risky shit.
