When I say Cthulhu Mythos, I mean something based off of Lovecraft's works and/or his proteges like Derleth.

I'm not talking about things like Bloodborne and that are inspired but a game that actually uses the Mythos as close to his work as possible.

I think a good example would be the official Call of Cthulhu game that was released a few years ago. Also games like Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth or Arkham Horror: Mother's Embrace.

Well Frogswares just released the remake of their old title Sherlock Holmes: The Awakening, which is a crossover with Lovecraft. And later this year we have the Alone in the Dark remake coming. So I think I'm good for "Cthulu Mythos" games.

My experience with the Cthulhu stuff over the past 15 years has mostly been through boardgames...

A tactical mission-based game like X-COM, Mutant Year Zero, etc would be neat, or alternatively something done in the cRPG style like Wasteland 3 or Pillars of Eternity 2. The boardgames -- especially Arkham Horror -- can get pretty dense with a lot of stuff going on but there's only so much you can simulate in a boardgame. On a computer, though, they could simulate entire towns with NPCs.

If it was co-op, that would be even better (the games above are co-op). I don't necessarily want Yet Another Horror game, I think the mythos is more interesting when you have a team of people actively investigating and gaining items (more like a pnp session) instead of jumpscares and instadeath.

Oh boy do I have a game not for you then:

It's called Fear and Hunger, an indie rpg from Finland. And it's gotten quite a reputation for being brutally hard and being quite scary. It actually draws a lot from Lovecraft with some mixings of Darkest Dungeon and the Berserk manga.

After reading this I went to reinstall Darkest Dungeon, and I couldn't find it in my library. Had to rebuy it, but was only 4.99. 🤷

Trying to not derail, but I originally played DD on PC when it released. For some reason I thought I bought it on PS4. But I forgot how much I enjoyed Darkest Dungeon!
