Thread: What do you think about pro gaming? [esports]

Pro gaming

  • Pretty cool

  • Lamest thing ever

  • I watch some

  • I am a pro gamer. Legit. Bro.

I like gaming tournaments, but eSports or professional gaming is cheesy as hell and will never take off. I feel like only the FGC has ever been somewhat legit, but everything else that tries to copy real sports by treating players like athletes and giving out jerseys and shit or renting out big stadiums is just the corniest nonsense ever.

I respect it more than actual sports but I think the amount of money put into it is absurd.

I've seen some wild payouts that's for sure.

Maybe since getting into fighters more seriously with SF6 ive caught a few videos on some tourneys. Definitely fun to watch, but yeah, the whole sell out crowd thing was always crazy to me. How they could pack a place is beyond me.

They are badly filmed. Not only do you have to know everything there is to know about whatever game is on, you have to know lore about every single player in the match.

When American football is easier to watch, you know you have a problem.

The funny thing is that I'm sure there are an order of magnitude more people making a living out of streaming than those living off of esports prize money.

Yeah, I think there's way more money in streaming, but IMO most players can't pull it off. The typical autist who is going to play the same game 12 hours per day to compete in a league isn't the type of person who can carry a live stream and keep an audience interested for hours at a time.

There are exceptions for older, known esports players like Summit or Shroud who have no personality whatsoever but managed to be in early enough to have a following, but these days I feel like you have to actually be somewhat entertaining.

The announcers are horrible in the pro scene. At Super Smash Bros. tournaments you should hear some of these guys. It's exactly as you would expect from them

I'm not a fan of competitive gaming or fighters so stuff like this doesn't appeal to me. Good for those that do.

I enjoy watching clips of high level play from time to time.

That's it.

A lot of skill and determination involved, but I don't have any interest in actually following it.

Big fan. I follow CS and Valorant pro scene but don't have a favorite team. I mostly just watch the big tournaments if they're on but don't go out of my way to watch them. But that's how I feel about all sports.

I like cybersports as a concept, but I hate what it's turned into (mostly in the sense of how any competitive setting tends to bring out the worst (in some) people) and what it's done to some of the game genres, mainly RTS.

Should have been an option in the poll for "Don't Care For It", which is how I feel. Had to vote the lame option when I don't think that. I really don't care for esports. I mean, good on people who can make a living out of it, but I play games for my own enjoyment and I don't need to watch the competitive side of it.

It's that annoying shit that you're asked to vote for when they announce the TGA nominations. My response: -

I just randomly pick names every time (sorry Geoff if you are reading, and I like to think you are).

I mean can't fault the hustle, but unless you are heavily invested in the scene/game it's largely lost on most people lets be honest.

I think pro graming esports is a dead end thing.

And this is coming from a dude who wants to be a pro bass angler.

So I feel like I know all about dead end sports. 😆

But here's the rub with pro gaming. There isn't anything in it for the spectator. You basically need to know all about the thing they're playing to know anything about what's happening. It's just not very entertaining to watch if it's not a game you're personally enamored with. I sometimes feel that way about televised pro fishing, but then I find out that there's a fair number of people who really enjoy watching high level fishing (ie. skipping lures under docks, sight-fishing bedding bass, etc.). There's really nothing like that in pro gaming where everything needs to be so fast and twitch-reflexes.

As a competitive thing with some money being poured into it, it's cool that there's that sort of outlet. However, the influencer scene has really eaten the pie. And it's done the same to the pro bass fishing world, too. The dork on YouTube is making a full blown living posting his fishing videos while far better fishermen are pouring a million dollars into traveling to fish what amounts to "minor league" pro circuits. The sponsors don't really care that you're on the cusp of being an "elite." They will pour out tens of thousands of dollars on the dork falling out of his boat on YouTube but HEY he really showcased that new reel from [insert reel brand here]. $$$$

I think its trying to make fetch happen.

I like competitive games, I use to be a competitive CS player. But the joke that has become eSports is terrible. And I loath the idea of schools having gaming teams.... when they should just be clubs....like Chess.

I got a temp ban on GAF for arguing this, but I still feel this way. Gaming IS NOT A SPORT. They are not athletes. Its a hobby. They are hobbyists. And calling it eSports is just insulting. Call it what it is, competitive gaming. No need to whore it up with rouge to sell some normies.

I think that both SF V and MvC were both ruined because of pro gamers. One because it was stated it was developed aimed at pro gamer and ruined single player content at launch and the other because a said pro gamer attempted to hand wave chars as just functions when people were upset about missing x-men.

so pro gamer. do what you want to do but shut up about how a game should be designed.

I 100% agree with all of this. Fuck pro gamers and fuck the cancer that is the FGC.
