To give some examples:

A lot of people loved how the environments in the levels in Mega Man X changed depending on what order you played the levels. This sort of fell off as the series went on though.

I used to love how raising morale could drastically improve your army's performance in early Dynasty Warriors game. An easy way to do this was to kill off enemy officers, or just hit a certain number of kills. As the series went on morale gradually started to have less and less of an effect on the gameplay, and killing officers seem to have no affect on morale whatsoever. This is even more true of some of the spinoffs like Samurai Warriors or other DW style games like Hyrule Warriors. It makes the gameplay a bit less rewarding honestly. Another cool element that DW and its clones ditched was when you would kill a head officer and all of the sub officers under his command would retreat. Killing officers used to feel more rewarding in early Dynasty Warriors games.
