Westworld series co-creator Jonathan Nolan is set to direct the premiere of Amazon's Fallout TV series, Deadline reports.

Production begins this year. Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel) and Graham Wagner (Silicon Valley) are showrunners. There's no release window yet.

Nolan is signed on as executive producer alongside Lisa Joy (who co-created the Westworld series with Nolan), Todd Howard for Bethesda Game Studios' and James Altman, director of publishing operations at Bethesda Softworks.

Nolan directed the pilot of HBO's Westworld, its season one finale and the season three premiere. He's still producing that show alongside Joy - season four starts this year.

The Fallout TV series was announced summer 2020 with a video teaser

Here's what Nolan and Joy had to say when the Fallout TV show deal was announced:

"Fallout is one of the greatest game series of all time. Each chapter of this insanely imaginative story has cost us countless hours we could have spent with family and friends. So we're incredibly excited to partner with Todd Howard and the rest of the brilliant lunatics at Bethesda to bring this massive, subversive, and darkly funny universe to life with Amazon Studios."

"Westworld creator..." + "Amazon" + "2022"....

= Meet a strong lesbian non-binary woman of colour who survives in an apocalyptic wasteland by being a "badass woman". Her rag tag group consisting of multiple gay people, mostly female leaders and a few token non-white men must survive against the all white male maurauders who represent all that is evil in the world and hunt down those who are "different" out of racism, bigotry and other forms of hatred. Watch these strong BiPOC women overthrow the racist (not Trump but really Trump) supporting white supremacist patriarchy! coming to Prime Video near you!

Oh fucking just fuck off.

The first season of Westworld was good and then they shat progressively worse into their hats after that, with the writing going off a cliff fully in S3.

Maybe it could be okay with non-mentalist writers but I sense there aren't a whole load of them getting commissioned right now.

Is Jonathan Nolan the brains behind his big brother Chris or is he more like a Castor Troy/Luigi/Solid Liquid Snake style burden on everyone and they wish he wasn't around?

It'll be shit

Amazon Studios' new guidelines include the following specific goals for its productions:
  • Each film or series with a creative team of three or more "above-the-line" roles – directors, writers, producers – "should ideally include a minimum 30% women and 30% members of an underrepresented racial ethnic/group."
  • Actors' real-life identities should align with those of their characters.
  • At least one character should have a speaking role from each of the following categories: LGBTQIA+, person with a disability, and three "regionally underrepresented race/ethnic/cultural groups." One character can fulfill one or more of these identities, and a minimum of 50% of them should be women.
  • Seeking bids from woman-owned and minority-owned vendors and suppliers.
  • Pay equity across casting, crew and suppliers.

WTF is this? 'Actors real-life identities should align with their characters' so one presumes that gay actors can't play straight characters then? Do they even grasp the concept of what 'acting' is?

Even without reading anything, I can't imagine Fallout translating to screen well at all. There's just too much there, and it's all very game-y. Low expectations are easily exceeded, but I don't think it will do well.

As for Amazon's Diversity Guidelines, it's a noble goal but it's absolutely the wrong way to go about it. The best case scenario is that all of these talented women/minority people are being held back for arbitrary reasons and this will give them the opportunity to show what they're made of, but the inevitable truth is that to force it means you're undoubtedly going to force some people who don't deserve to get the jobs they're getting and haven't earned their stripes, and the products will suffer as a result.

I'm not sure what I think is worse: the forced producer/director/writer quota (writers makes sense, director/producer doesn't), or forcing "LGBTQIA+, disabled, and 3 minority ethnic groups" into the works and that they have to be played by people that actually are those things. That means changing scripts to have token characters, regardless of what the show is about. Imagine Rain Man never existed because Dustin Hoffman wasn't allowed to act as a person with a disability.

Obviously, on balance, I have a merit based approach to things so it is just as strange to deny roles for superficial reasons. But throwing people at the top of the ladder doesn't seem like the best thing for art or business to me the strokes are too broad to just be fine on every production.

So that mean no more black people randomly insterted in European period pieces? If so, this might be a good thing... oh wait the very next requirement kills it. Must have a fucking disabled person? GTFO of here. How can someone write this and not feel dumb?

It's all selectively implemented to pass political and bigoted purity tests.

Unless they'll only be hiring people that have been heavily irradiated and mutated into 8 foot tall retarded monsters in real life to play the super mutants, actual aliens from those fictional planets for sci fi shows, and only people who really have magical powers to play wizards.
