I've read this scripture a few time now, and it still seems somewhat inconsequential. I suppose that it would be odd to see many members at church with all kind of different headwear and hats and all that while at church. But this doesn't seem like anything to be concerned about. This is one of those chapters where I get really agitated with Paul's teaching style. He also forgets about Samson, whose long hair was the source of his strength as given to him by God. Sometimes, I get the feeling that Paul 'stumbles' sometimes in his preaching. Maybe that's wrong of me to say, but it's what I think at this current time. Like why is he concerned about hair at all? Pretty sure we were given hair for many good reasons but Paul is saying to cover it away? Seems to me like this lesson is of little importance if no importance but maybe one day it'll come to me and I'll think the opposite.

I'm with you 100% on this. I also thought of Samson but more obviously, Jesus, who is depicted to have had long hair. Really made me scratch my head when I read that part. I don't want to be that guy who questions or thinks he knows better than someone in the Bible, but it's such an obvious contradiction that stands out. Doesn't seem like he really thought it out before saying it.

1 Corinthians 11:29

29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

Kind of my own selfish reasons on this one but I think this is a good passage for me. I occasionally play church gigs and always have felt awkward declining the Communion. This verse actually eases my mind about that.

Prophecy and Tongues

Tongues Must Be Interpreted

Tongues a Sign to Unbelievers
20 Brethren, do not be children in understanding; however, in malice be babes, but in understanding be mature.

I will speak to this people;
And yet, for all that, they will not hear Me,"
says the Lord.

Order in Church Meetings

Chapter 13 spoke about the importance of faith, hope and love:

1 Corinthians 13: 13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

I've spent a little while trying to figure out the differences between faith and hope. My best guess is that hope is wishing for an outcome, while faith is acting as if the wish will certainly happen.

1 Corinthians 13 is one of my favorite chapters in the book of Corinthians. Sometimes when I take a moment to be still, there have been moments in my life when I was looking upon something, or someone, and it truly seemed like the Lord was telling me - revealing to me - something sacred about love in my heart. It's as if God said to me, "My son, look over there" or "Son, listen" and then I would see or hear something near me from others that instantly clicked and taught me something that I needed to understand or should understand so that I could see truly see what it's all about; the big picture. It truly is all about love for one another and living our lives in that way. It may seem too simple to be true, but it is true.

When I was alone and off to the library doing some Bible studying about nine months ago, it felt like God revealed to me a truth that I should know; a connection I needed to make in order to understand something very important. It was of course related to love. It moved me, I had to exit the library and eventually was moved to tears and weeping. It's hard for us to realize how precious life is sometimes amidst all the chaos; hard to understand just how cherished the lives of others are and what they share in this life, until God takes you by the hand and brings you over to "today's lesson" to show you something beautiful beyond words. It moves you to tears, it truly does, for me at least it does. And when God teaches, it is concise. Boy is it powerful, and beautiful. And the lessons are so brief that I almost want to call them realizations, because it feels like God definitely bestows this knowledge and understanding. I never earned it or had it coming due to my own thoughts leading up to such gifts. It was given graciously to me by God and I thank God for it. I just wish I weren't such a flawed person so that I could do more with what God taught me.

Love is the most important thing in this world and 1 Corinthians 13 is one of those chapters that teaches us about love, so I believe it's one of those chapters that can be revisited and maybe even should be revisited every day or weekly, considering how important and relevant it is to us and our lives. It's also very concise. We are blessed to have this chapter here in the Bible to read and live by and I'm really glad that God chose Paul to be His disciple. Even though some of his lessons are frustratingly tough to understand at first, some of the brightest teachings ever given to us by the Lord are written to us by Paul's hands. It's chapters like these that put on full display that the Bible is the Word of God and that scripture is God-breathed.

The Resurrection Body

I thought these verses were interesting, as those who don't follow religion or believe in the afterlife will likely be living mainly for the moment. Life can be difficult and progress can be slow, so for those who don't have any concept for the afterlife, they are missing out on a larger purpose to life on earth.

For me, moments of suffering throughout life on earth are somewhat minimised due to my belief in a much better potential life in heaven. Living on earth for 100 years or so, with times of suffering and pointless stupidity, would be a very unpleasant prospect if it was all there was. Evil people, sickness and natural disasters are definitely things that are not necessary or welcome.

Paul's Change of Plans

Forgiveness for the Offender

Ministers of the New Covenant

I like the next verse, 1 Corinthians 15: 33

33 Do not be misled: "Bad company corrupts good character."

Even if you are aware of being in bad company, if you don't seek to separate from it, overtime it will corrupt you. I try to get all negative influences out of my life whenever possible. If I have to be around it (happens a lot as a musician), I make sure that it's as short as possible and to keep my distance while I'm there.

10 Anyone you forgive, I also forgive. And what I have forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, 11 in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.

I think this is stressing the importance of forgiving and moving on because if you don't, it could lead to sin? Holding grudges/wanting revenge could lead someone to sinning themselves, which is why earlier in the Bible it is stressed that God will deal punishment/judgement when necessary.

As much as I think revenge would solve a lot of problems, it will just cause further issues in the future. Finding a balance between being a forgiving person and being a doormat for others is the challenge I think. Setting boundaries and keeping them as well as cutting bad people out of your life seems to be a good compromise.

This year is a bit of a season of suffering for me and my family. While I do find some comfort in Christ in the long term, I do find that comfort is not very easy to come by in the short term. Just fixing big issues would bring the most comfort, and even in my 30s I am still at a loss as to why there has to be so much suffering during our time on earth. Or do we need, like some people, letters of recommendation to you or from you? 2 You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone. 3 You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.

4 Such confidence we have through Christ before God. 5 Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God. 6 He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

The Greater Glory of the New Covenant
7 Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory, transitory though it was, 8 will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious? 9 If the ministry that brought condemnation was glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness! 10 For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory. 11 And if what was transitory came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts!

12 Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold. 13 We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to prevent the Israelites from seeing the end of what was passing away. 14 But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. 15 Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. 16 But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate[a] the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

Present Weakness and Resurrection Life
4 Therefore, since through God's mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart. 2 Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone's conscience in the sight of God. 3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4 The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5 For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. 6 For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness,"[b] made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God's glory displayed in the face of Christ.

7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. 8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. 11 For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. 12 So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.

13 It is written: "I believed; therefore I have spoken."[c] Since we have that same spirit of[d] faith, we also believe and therefore speak, 14 because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you to himself. 15 All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.

16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

What is the purpose of keeping him at large here on Earth? That's what I keep asking myself. Does anyone know? Or does the Bible have an answer to that question?

Same question applies to mankind. Why did God let us live when so many humans cause so much sin in the world? Hard to say for sure, but I'm glad God has a plan for it.

I wonder that myself. Satan was there in the Garden of Eden and he is still causing trouble today. I don't know why God even allowed him there in the first place, that is probably something only God knows. If we could have just chilled in the Garden of Eden for eternity, I think everything would have been fine.

With my Mum going through insane amounts of suffering at the moment, I don't really know how this suffering is supposed to reveal the life of Jesus. Suffering seems to beget more suffering and eventually death.

The Ministry of Reconciliation

What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience.12 We are not trying to commend ourselves to you again, but are giving you an opportunity to take pride in us, so that you can answer those who take pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the heart. 13 If we are "out of our mind," as some say, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For Christ's love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 15 And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.

Paul's Hardships

Warning Against Idolatry
14 Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? 15 What harmony is there between Christ and Belial[d]? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? 16 What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said:

"I will live with them
and walk among them,
and I will be their God,
and they will be my people."[e]
17 Therefore,

"Come out from them
and be separate,
says the Lord.
Touch no unclean thing,
and I will receive you."[f]
18 And,

"I will be a Father to you,
and you will be my sons and daughters,

7 Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holinessout of reverence for God.

Paul's Joy Over the Church's Repentance
2 Make room for us in your hearts. We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have exploited no one. 3 I do not say this to condemn you; I have said before that you have such a place in our hearts that we would live or die with you. 4 I have spoken to you with great frankness; I take great pride in you. I am greatly encouraged; in all our troubles my joy knows no bounds.

5 For when we came into Macedonia, we had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn—conflicts on the outside, fears within. 6 But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus, 7 and not only by his coming but also by the comfort you had given him. He told us about your longing for me, your deep sorrow, your ardent concern for me, so that my joy was greater than ever.

8 Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it. Though I did regret it—I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while— 9 yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see how happy Titus was, because his spirit has been refreshed by all of you. 14 I had boasted to him about you, and you have not embarrassed me. But just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting about you to Titus has proved to be true as well. 15 And his affection for you is all the greater when he remembers that you were all obedient, receiving him with fear and trembling. 16 I am glad I can have complete confidence in you.

These questions I will ponder for a while. When we begin to study Genesis and all its chapters I have a feeling that deep thought is going to spark and we will seek the answers and the reasons why. The book of Genesis does not give us every detail we need, unfortunately. No book does, but Genesis is a tough pill to swallow because we get so many profound truths given or told to us, and yet we cannot comprehend them totally. And besides that, many pieces to the puzzle seem to be missing; not given anywhere in scripture.
