Thread: Vagrant Story Retrospective

So I Finished A Videogame has a new retrospective, this time on Squaresoft's cult classic rpg and last hurrah on the original Playstation, Vagrant Story.

As someone who never played the game (my brother did), but nonetheless intrigued by it, this retrospective was a nice deep dive into the man who created it (Yasumi Matsuno) and the circumstances that led to the game being created. For me, while I'm not to impressed with the gameplay as was shown here, I'm astounded what Matsuno and his team were able to achieve with regards to cinematic presentation using the PS1's limited hardware. A shame, as I think this game should have come out on the PS2 to better realize their vision.

I played most Squaresoft games on the PS1. I never played this one. I think I own it digital on PSN. I should give it a shot sometime. It looks so clunky though.

It's so jaggy practically unplayable today.
Yeah. That's what I figured. It was trying to be an 3D action rpg at a time when 3D gaming was still in it's infancy. Just from watching the video you can see there are numerous systems that don't make sense and are not explained to the player. A modern game at least would have the decency to give you a guide to it's mechanics.

This game, Xenogears, and Final Fantasy VIII give me a headache.

2000 definitely saw better Squaresoft RPGs that year with Final Fantasy IX and Chrono Cross, both in gameplay and graphics.
