Sales

July - September quarter and total installed base as of end of September:

If the numbers are right, it's interesting how low the production is for the Xbox consoles and how there are more S consoles being made than X. They're all sold out, so if Microsoft had been able to produce more, they'd be selling more, theoretically.

We keep hearing how Sony has messed up on the production front and should be making more, but it looks like they were able to secure deals to produce and ship to retailers twice as many units as Microsoft. So they must have done something right. The demand is just ridiculous.

Trying to remember the source, but the data we saw recently for sales to date, showed that ~60% of the Xbox Series consoles sold were Series S. So if it were PS5 vs Series X it would look even worse. Lucky for MS selling consoles isnt the main goal, or so they keep saying.

What I would love to know is the success of the PS5 (vs Series X) is more the result of people objectively thinking its the superior console (for various reasons) or simply cuz they had a PS4 and were deeply invested in the ecosystem.

Edit: I miss remembered the XS sales numbers. I found my source (sadly an internal doc I cant share), but it was the reverse. 60% of the Xboxes sold were Series X. My bad on misremembering.

Yeah it'd be very interesting to know that. And also it'd be interesting to know why so few Series X consoles are being made. It seems like sales = production numbers in these crazy times. So maybe even if there was going to be a big gap between XSX and PS5, how much smaller would that gap get if Microsoft actually manufactured more of them?

You can pick up an XSS in the supermarket near me, the local big toy store and get it delivered next day on Amazon. They seem to just be in stock the whole time now here in Great Britain.

PS5 and XSX are still like gold dust however.

I'm also not surprised PS5 managed to secure more semiconducters to create more stock. They're a safer bet brand wise, so are far more likely to be able to put in additional orders more quickly, creating a feedback loop that will further help Playstation and hurt Xbox.

Yeah, Xbox Series S has been very easy to find all year long. You can hop on Best Buy in either the US or Canada and grab one right now. Picked an electronics retailer at random from the UK, Argos, and it's available there right now, too.

Microsoft's problem is that they misjudged the market - unintentionally, I hope - and allocated too many resources to Series S when they would have been much better spent on Series X. XSX definitely wouldn't sit on shelves the way XSS does.

I didn't know the S was that easy to find. I assumed it was out of stock everywhere too.

I wonder if it was a misjudging of the market by making so few X models or if the S was a result of knowing how few X models they'd be able to make.

series S is the only thing you can find up here. If there was an XBOX X MS probably would have had one more sale in me...
