Final Fantasy VII launched on this day in Japan back in 1997, and today, Square Enix has announced that it has officially registered January 31st as "Final Fantasy VII Day" with the Japan Anniversary Association.



Final Fantasy VII director and Final Fantasy VII Remake project producer Yoshinori Kitase has issued the following statement:

Final Fantasy VII is one of the most beloved video games of all time and has sold almost 14 million copies worldwide since 1997. It is credited by some as giving the JRPG mainstream acceptance in the west and transforming the Final Fantasy series into one of the most popular video game brands of all time.

As well as the recent remake project, the original Final Fantasy VII has also been made available on the Switch and Xbox.

I started it sometime late November 2021, and finished the game in Spring 2022

The game's story is excellent. It literally made my head spin one night when I was re-thinking the plot and moments in the game that had just taken place

I didn't play it until the very end of 97 when a friend got it for Christmas (it might've even been early 98), and I didn't have a PSOne anyway. Thought the 3D looked ugly and the battle system was clunky. Previously that year I played through Diablo and Fallout on the family PC. I was glued to PC magazine at the time, hotly anticipating Half Life and Ultima Online.

Played it more fully later using the native PS1 emulator on PSP and didn't really like it much, but I don't blame FF7 for it. I haven't enjoyed most of the FF games I played, and I think the PS1 era of 3D RPGs are super ugly; even in their heyday I thought they were ugly so I dunno..

Redemption arc: I loved FF7 Crisis Core and played through it twice.

Honestly the biggest memory I have of FFVII is that horrific boat ride fighting Jenova only to be greeted with a beach house / resort.

Costa Del Sol + the music + playing soccer on the beach was just such a wild, random, and refreshing break from the insane story and foreboding battles I was engaged in.

Where is the I played it on PC in 1998 option? While you spazes had to suffer through 640x480, I had teh glory of 800x600 fidelity!

Of course I also had to endure playin the game by keyboard.... small price to pay.... to play.

I've played it a few years ago on the Switch. Thought it sucked monkey balls. Story was written by schizos, just a bunch of random events, first CD was okay though.

I agree 100% percent. If you ever played PC RPGs of that era, FF7 is just a really dumb visual novel.

Also enjoyed Crisis Core more. At least it had a fun gameplay loop and it was my first PSP game.

I was only 6 in 1997 so I don't think I actually played it until several years later. The first Final Fantasy game that I remember playing was Final Fantasy X on PS2 which I really enjoyed before working my way back in the series with Final Fantasy IX (my favorite in the series) and then VII (also really good).

This is what convinced me that Sony and this Playstation thing were legit and to be taken seriously. I was around the same age as Cloud at the time upon it's release and to say that I was hyped for it is a huge understatement. The game lived up to the hype I had and then some. I loved it and the story has still remained with me all these years since. It was awesome to see FF7 succeed and finally have JRPG's find success outside of Japan and for it to prove to other publishers and developers that people outside of Japan could make it worthwhile for them to do so.

The fact that it's been remade to a point so far is a testament to how much people love the game still, and I totally can see why.

I'm sure if I looked hard enough, I could find the FF7 T-shirt that I got with the game back in September 1997.

I remember buying a JP copy of Tobal No. 1 just to play the FF7 demo it came with back in mid '96. Had no fucking clue what was being said or what any of the options meant, but I managed to power through. It was a good fucking time, let me tell you.

Maybe one of the first games where the weapon change would actually show on your character. It's a classic for me. Might go play it after persona 4.

I also played it on PC and I was very happy that I did when I later saw what it looked like on PS. Maybe better video cables would have helped there.

Over 25 years later and I still get pumped every time I hear the music. Doesn't matter which song. Some of my favorite videogame music is from FF7.

Maybe. It was Vaseline smeared on the lens vs the PC experience.... thats all I remember.

I played it on my core 2 duo laptop running windows 10 (i think win10 released a few months prior) and yeah played through to hotel thing then became more interested in xenogears both of which I was trying desperately to get to run Without any issues and at a higher resolution than what was supported. It Lead me down a rabbit hole of those scam pc drivers that installed a bunch of bloatware on the poor champ. I did however have quite a bit of fun trying to figure out what the Best settings were along with playing the games. So yeah there you have it the most retarded story That'll be mentioned in this thread.

That's an immediate and undeniable difference though. Not some 1440p vs 4k that most people couldn't tell apart if their life depended on it.

Though what I remember most was that the colors and contrast were so much better on PC. But like I said that might have been bad cables.
