Thread: This is where things are at with NES Tetris today. I know you were wondering. All the info's right here.

Every year there is a Classic Tetris World Championship where people from around the world compete in a NES Tetris tournament. Things have gotten ridiculous with the skill level.

The 29th level in the game is when the already accelerated game speed gets doubled. It is supposed to be unplayable and was referred to as the "kill screen" all the way up to just a couple years ago. The best in the world didn't really play far into the kill screen.

But these kids have figured out how to "roll" their fingers against the back of the controller while using their thumb on the DPAD to force the pieces to move further/faster than ever possible before.

So the physical manipulation of the controller plus a smart kid's brain obsessing over NES Tetris strategy has led to an all new level of skill. It used to be mostly 30-50 year old dudes but now it's all early teenage kids. But seriously just watch the first game of this match:

I saw a video on the tapping thing a year or two back. Speed runners are something else.
Yeah that's what's crazy is "hyper tapping" has been around as a skill for many years. Not many of the people competing in the world championships did it and the people who did talked about how much it hurt to play that way for a long session.

Then some people came up with this rolling technique and shit has exploded.

Thinking about it, regardless of how comparatively elaborate this technique is, people did that kind of borderline physical cheating the hardware since early on.
In some sports games on the Commodore C64 (Decatlon, Summer Games, Winter Games...) character were moved by rapidly pushing the joystick left and right. What we did was turn the joystick upside down and shake it for better perfomance. I really wanted to post a GIF here but couldn't find one.

Oops, I accidentally bumped this thread during a time when Tetris is involved in a hostile faceoff. Totally accidental! I wish there was some kind of warning that let me know the thread is more than 3 months old so I'd have had to agree that I understand or something. That might have prevented this accidental bumping at this coincidental time.

But wow in an unrelated note, the videos sure make this game look better than something like...oh I dunno...say, Chrono Trigger.
